Return to LEARN We are so grateful to have completed the fall semester in person and on campus at St. Bede. Teachers and students reunited in-person and remotely in August after having finished the 2020 school year completely virtual. Armed with masks and following all state and health department guidelines, St. Bede was able to make the necessary changes and sacrifices to provide in-person learning four days a week, with remote learning one day a week. We are proud to say we were successfully able to provide a sense of community in the hallways for the entire first semester. Students, faculty, and staff committed themselves to respecting those around them, allowing for traditional experiences to still occur. Masses and prayer services were able to take place outside, such as the annual Welcome Mass, held on the football field and in the stands. Students were still able to enjoy the tradition of Spirit Day in a fun and safe environment. Virtual open houses for 8th graders and boarding students were held, as well as virtual parent-teacher conferences. St. Bede often talks about a commitment to life-long learning and this semester was a true test of this commitment, as learning was alive and well in the classrooms of St. Bede. Teachers and students learned side-by-side as teachers adapted their teaching style and curriculum delivery to include using technology to connect remote students live into the classroom. Remote learners, locally and ten boarding students, unable to return to the U.S. due to travel restrictions, engaged with teachers daily. St. Bede teachers and administrators have continued to show their passion for learning, finding solutions, and overcoming challenges to best meet the academic and spiritual needs of all of our students during this global pandemic. In an extraordinary year filled with new challenges, we are thankful for each additional day that we have shared together at St. Bede. 2 • THE BEDAN RECORD

ANNUAL REPORT July 1, 2019 - June 30, 2020 A Year in Review At the turn of this unusual year in which I find myself assuming an additional role of responsibility for Saint Bede Academy, I feel compelled to begin by expressing gratitude for the blessings those before me have provided. I am incredibly grateful for the entire administration, faculty, and staff, as well as the parent community for their commitment to education and the well-being of our students. We are truly a better and stronger community because of their hard work and adaptation to the rapidly changing environment presented in the Spring of 2020. To everyone who has supported Saint Bede in the past year, in ways large or small, thank you for your faith and generosity. The 2019-2020 Annual Report reflects the generosity of so many donors, alumni, and friends who place confidence and trust in the mission and work of Saint Bede. This generosity and unwavering financial support helped mitigate the financial risk and cover near-term spring 2020 shortfalls caused by the pandemic. Yet, despite a record boarding population in 2019-2020, which added 19 new students and $409,075 in net revenue, the toll on short-term fundraising, especially resulting from the inability to host our single largest social and fundraising event, the Auction, the year ended with an operating deficit of $367,435. Like so many institutions across the nation, Saint Bede Academy continues to face the unprecedented challenges brought on by the ongoing global pandemic, political and social unrest, and the financial uncertainty impacting too many families. The longer-term financial impacts are without a doubt challenging and considerably more daunting in fiscal year 2020-2021 as the ability to attract new international boarding students due to travel and health restrictions continues. In addition to those restrictions, social gatherings and fundraising remain on hold. Both are essential elements to the financial health and stability of Saint Bede. The growth of our boarding program, both domestic and international, is crucial to the long-term sustainability of Saint Bede. On page 23 you will learn of ways you can work with us to secure more boarders. Your help in this endeavor is needed now more than ever. Fortunately, the importance of Catholic education and the ability of a small, student-centered institution, such as Saint Bede, has allowed us to retain our student enrollment with the help of the Promise for the Future Emergency Fund led by the Class of ’61. This immediate response from our generous benefactors created a pool of financial assistance to help families, specifically impacted by COVID-19. Most importantly, we have been able to meet the needs of our students since August 2020 by safely keeping our classrooms open to in-person instruction and providing the academic, social, and emotional support our students deserve. As you will learn in “Counting Our Blessings” it was also a year of great accomplishment and special experiences. From the moving outdoor, parking lot graduation ceremony honoring the Class of 2020 to the opening of newly renovated modern restrooms facilities in the 131 year-old Academy, we have been blessed. While the financial impacts of COVID-19 were unexpected and disruptive, they are not insurmountable. What will truly allow Saint Bede to endure current financial challenges and continue our strategic and capital plans to establish financial stability is—as it has always been—you, our Saint Bede Family. Eve Postula ’84 Superintendent & Treasurer 14 • THE BEDAN RECORD
