GRADUATION In a year like no other, graduation exercises for the Class of 2020 were no exception. Due to social distancing requirements and restrictions on large gatherings, FCS obtained special permission to hold its first ever drive-in graduation. Forty-nine seniors piled into vehicles with their families and guests and pulled into assigned parking spaces in the front parking lot. A podium was set up on the front porch, and Mr. Yost welcomed the attendees via short-wave radio. As Mrs. Sizemore read their names, vehicles (carefully directed by Dean Roper) pulled up to one of three stations. Diplomas were presented to seniors by their parents, and each group had a few moments to pose for pictures. Seniors were also provided with DVD containing a video of the event, photos, and videos of the traditional graduation speeches which were pre-recorded. While it certainly wasn't the graduation they envisioned, it was surely one the students and their families won't forget. Special thanks go out to Dean Roper for the meticulous planning needed to make the event a success. Congratulations to the Class of 2020. 17
ACADEMICS As FCS continually works to improve instruction, cross-curricular academics is a valuable tool. This method intentionally applies multiple academic disciplines to a lesson and may involve one teacher or several. When students learn across disciplines, deeper connections are made. Our elementary teachers often make use of this strategy. For example, our first grade students may use information from a science unit on animals to write a 3-point expository paragraph in English. Teachers can expand the method even further by working in conjunction with the computer teacher to create a PowerPoint presentation about a particular animal. A recent example from our middle school team involved our 6th grade students when teachers collaborated to teach a large unit on Rome. Students learned about ancient Rome in history, read The Bronze Bow in literature, and performed an informative speech in costume for language arts. In addition, their history lesson about Mt. Vesuvius was complemented by a hands-on science lesson on volcanoes. Paired with other creative methods of instruction, cross-curricular instruction enhances comprehension and retention, and provides our teachers and students with a unique opportunity to present and process what is being taught in multiple disciplines. FCS trains students to be Christian Leaders for Life using these Expected Student Outcomes as goals for every student. • become a disciple of Jesus and lead others to do the same SPIRITUAL • make God’s Word central in his life • defend and share his faith • respect authority and understand its vital role • recognize his role in the nuclear family • work to achieve at his level of God-given potential ACADEMIC • think wisely and critically • communicate with excellence verbally and in written form • use technology to equip, expand, create, engage, and learn • view learning as a lifelong process • recognize and use his gifts, talents, and abilities to benefit SOCIAL AND the body of Christ PERSONAL • serve as a US and world citizen by putting others first • form healthy relationships that demonstrate Christ’s love • appreciate deeply all of God’s creation 18 • be a good steward of his physical body

Spring or Fall What's one memory you have from working with Gary and Andy Foss? Pancakes or Waffles I always smile when I think of Gary and Andy. Their dedication to the calling God gave them was evident in all they said and did. I still chuckle at the “green jacket” Gary was famous for wearing, how he could always Coffee or Tea be found directing traffic somewhere, and when he corrected me for walking past litter on campus and taught me about valuing the amazing gift of property God has given us. It is hard not to tear up when I recall Mountains or Beach how Andy poured herself into me as a young administrator. She always had time for questions, was generous with her time, and was very “real.” She didn’t pretend to have all the answers, but knew that God put us here City or Countryside in the roles we have to talk things through, work together, and do what God leads us to do. Winter or Summer What excites you about being at FCS? I think FCS excels in developing relationships at all levels. I am enjoying Card Game or Board Game the process of building new relationships and re-building “old” ones in my first few months back at FCS. People here truly love the Lord, each other, our students, and they have a deep sense of commitment to our Delivery or Dine In mission. I have great joy in being part of the process of educating students to succeed in every area of their lives and fulfill the calling God has for Vanilla or Chocolate them. FINANCES $19,307 $44,306 Raised by the Raised by the Golf Tournament Boosterthon Fun Run FCS Legacy Endowment Fund It has been the goal of the school for many years to establish an endowment fund. Because of the generosity of our founder, Gary Foss, FCS was the beneficiary of a legacy life insurance policy, and that gift was used to establish an endowment in 2019, the FCS Legacy Endowment Fund. The fund’s value is currently $701,755.97. It will be used for student scholarships and staff salaries. An established portion will be used for those purposes, but only after its value exceeds $1 million. The fund was established by a resolution of the FCS Board of Directors, who also guides the associated investment portfolio. If you or someone you know would like to donate to the FCS Legacy Endowment, please contact Phyllis Baughman or Rick Yost at the FCS Business Office. 540-373-5355. $ 491 , 505 $8,038 $9,000 $501,019Total Amount of Variable Tuition Awarded General Scholarships Arianna & Alissa Nelson Scholarships Awarded in 2019-2020 23 23
