From the Pastor’s Desk Easter Joy? When the first Easter happened there was great fear. The disciples were under a self- imposed stay-at-home order, huddled together in the upper room. They were a “family” of self-doubting believers. None of them could understand the whirlwind of events that they had just witnessed. There were indeed victims of a dream turned nightmare. The first Easter morn was one full of trepidation, fear and anxiety. The women ventured out, probably because they would not be bothered even if they were recognized, after all they were just sentimental women, they were no threat. That is how they would have been seen by the standards of that day. Yet, it was even brave of them to go out into what could be exposure to suffering and even death. But, they go out, in sorrow, not joy. Fast forward to 2020, nearly two thousand years later. We might feel like those first followers of Jesus on that first Easter morning. We, too, are huddled together with our families under a stay-at-home order. We, too, are taken aback by the whirlwind of events that have threated our security, our very lives. We, too, are bombarded with news that can easily fill one with trepidation, fear and anxiety. There is one big difference though. You and I know how the events of the first Easter turned from sorrow and fear to joy and peace. And, even though the followers of Jesus would still from time to time have to huddle together and stay at home they never again could let their anxiety rule their lives. They knew the secret of peace and, yes, joy in the midst of sorrow and pain and even death. It might be tempting to think of ourselves as those first disciples sheltered in place in the upper room, full of fear and worry. But we cannot be like them, they knew nothing of what we know even from our earliest years. They did not know what was happening, we do. They did not understand the events they were victims of, we do. They did not experience the Peace of the One they loved, we do. What is important, as we look back upon those first disciples, is that once Jesus appeared and they received that Peace they no longer acted as victims - timid, fearful and withdrawing - no, they acted as witnesses to something wonderful. Even as the early years passed and they would be persecuted even to death, they never lost the wonder of what Jesus had done for them. It is that same wonder at what God has done for us in Jesus that allows us, in the face of suffering, separation and death, to know His peace. The Holy Spirit has been breathed upon us as a vaccine against all odds. A cure for our first parents gift of eternal death. For that ill fated gift has wrought for us a gift even greater, the sure gift of life beyond this life; life with God in the present that offer as inner peace, a knowledge that God has our back. A peace that leads to a joy that no matter what happens we have life always and nothing can take that away; even separation in this life can not separate us from life in Jesus. We might seem like victims of this virus that haunts us. Yet, in reality I see more and more that we are witnesses instead; witnesses to God’s enduring love as we assist others still, as we pray for others daily, as we sacrifice for others. You and I are not helpless victims if we have Christ, we are always witnesses of his peace and joy which no virus can destroy. Like those first disciples on the evening of the first Easter day, we now know that Christ lives and so we live. Even if we are separated we are never fully separated from Christ. ALLELUIA! HE IS RISEN! Website: www.stmichaelparish.life Page 3 April 12, 2020
CELEBRAa TING EASTER SUNDAY BEFORE YOU BEGIN: Continue to celebrate Easter Sunday with these prayers in the morning and/or before for the First Meal of Easter with the following traditional blessing. A simple prayer space can be created with white/gold table clothes, candles, crucifix, and/or plants and flowers; or, the prayer could be moved into the kitchen before the Easter Meal with at least some of the foods for the meal present which remind us of this festive season and God’s bountiful love. If Holy Water is available, place in a small bowl for use. If the hymn is unfamiliar, you may find it on the internet (example: YouTube), shorten it, or simply move on to the other prayers. A leader should divide up the roles and adjust the service as necessary to make sure everyone is able to participate. 1. Hymn 2. Introduction Alleluia! Alleluia! They both ran, but the other disciple ran faster than Peter and arrived at the tomb first; he bent down and saw the burial cloths there, but did not go in. When Simon Peter arrived after him, he went into the tomb and saw the burial cloths there, and the cloth that had covered his head, not with the burial cloths but rolled up in a separate place. Then the other disciple also went in, he one who had arrived at the tomb first, and he saw and believed. For they did not yet understand the Scripture that he had to rise from the dead.
