COMPETE Plus 05 FIGHT BACK BODY SHAMING “I am curvy and I like it” yells Joey at Rachel’s younger sister By Priyanka Nair when she tries to discourage him from eating pizza. I Assistant Professor immediately fell in love with Joey, for accepting his body UWSB type and being comfortable with it. What impresses me is that he doesn't allow anyone to fat shame him and make him feel low. (For the uninitiated, Joey is a character from an outrageously famous sitcom 'F.R.I.E.N.D.S'. This character played by Matt Le Blanc is absolutely in love with food, so much that he doesn't share his food even with his best friends). He doesn't even think for a fraction of second 'a moment on the lips, forever on hips' effect of junk food on the body. I wish women around the world would have guts like him. To proudly accept who we are and embrace the diversity of our body. Strongly opposing and not allowing anyone to make us feel any less just because a woman is curvy. A woman is always judged by the standards set by the society and in India, it is particularly brutal. You are expected to be fair- skinned and even if you are dark (or wheatish, as they say) there is an acceptable level of darkness you must adhere to! You are supposed to have clear skin and preferably brown, green or blue eyes, slender body with a height that doesn’t make a man feel small and uncomfortable. Sometimes I feel we Indians want a human Barbie, not a real woman. The moment you start gaining weight, you become a magnet to all sorts of comments easily coming from everyone—right from your 'kaam wali bai' to your 'padosi', from your friends and colleagues. You can find the expressions ranging from raised eyebrows to 'ooh' and 'oh my'. Everybody starts playing like the umpire of a cricket match, closely monitoring from where the fat is sprouting from. Dude! It’s uncomfortable, embarrassing and none of your business. We women are just like you- humans. There’s so much going inside and outside our body. We face hormonal changes most of the time and thanks to the pressure from society we have a baggage full of anxiety, tension, stress from workload and especially from conceiving and bringing up a baby and guess what-- it affects our body. They are: a) The Person speaking = First person ( I, me, mine, we, us, our, ours) b) The Person spoken to = Second person (You, your, yours, yourself, thou, thee, thy, thine) c) The Person spoken of = Third person (He, She, It, They, his, her, him, hers, them, their, theirs) A Chart depicting Pronouns of all three persons with case and numbers 1st Person 2nd Person 3rd Person Number Singular Plural Singular Plural Singular Plural CASE You Nominative I We Thou You He, She, It They Objective Me Us You, Thee, You Him, Her, It Them Yours Possessive My, Mine Our, Ours Thy, Thine, Your, Yours His, Her, Its, Their, Your Hers Theirs The following deductions can be made while analyzing the above chart: I. First person and second person include only masculine and feminine gender. For ex. I, We, You is used commonly for both the genders. II. In third person singular, he is used for masculine and she is used for feminine gender. III. Animals, birds, trees-plants, insects, infants and non-living objects take It for their singular version. However, the third gender is also accepted among human beings these days as ‘It’. IV. They is used for plural version of all male, female and neuter (animals/objects) genders. V. There is no change in the nominative and objective case of you and it. VI. The pronouns after than and but are always used in Nominative case. For ex. She is older than I (am). I know you more than he (knows you). Remember In a single sentence, if different pronouns are used, then their sequence of appearance is: 2+3+1, i.e. second person is first, and then third person followed by first person in the last. For eg: I. You, he and I went there. (2+3+1) ii. You and I are friends. (2+1) iii. He and I are qualified. (3+1) iv. You and he are present. (2+3) Exception But in case of statements of mistake or acceptance of fault, the order changes, for ex: I, you and he abused him OR I and he broke the chair. It is too much for this issue, isn’t it? So, leaving the rest discussion on pronouns for the next issue, where I will take up different uses of It and other forms of pronoun. Till then, happy reading!

COMPETE Plus 12 EUROPEAN COUNTRIES SHOWCASE THEIR CRAFTS TO TOURISTS By Prof. Kakoli Biswas Associate Professor UID This summer, I had gone to Europe on a cruise with my family. The countries visited were Italy (Venice), Montegro (Kotor),Greece (Athens, Olympia) and Croatia (Split, Dubornik). Apart from the normal touristic experiences like monuments, forts, boat rides, cuisine, etc, I had a close look at how the handicrafts/handlooms in these countries are flourishing and a big tourist attraction. For students of fashion, it is not only important to know and understand the various crafts of India but also appreciate and understand how these indigenous crafts can be marketed to the world. It is wonderful to see how most of the European countries have successfully managed to showcase their crafts to the tourists. For example, there are two very important crafts in the city of Venice. One is the art of glassware at the famous island of Munro, and thus the craft is known world over as Munro glassware. The moment you land up at Venice, at every street corner across the city, you will see shops selling Munro glassware. There are live workshops on how the glass jewellery is created by hand. We visited one of the workshops to look at the marvel of handmade glassware. Alongside the island of Munro, there is another island named Burano, which is famous for its lacework. Just as you could find Munro glassware at every nook and corner of Venice, you could also find shows selling and promoting Burano lacework. One interesting aspect WORLD OF WANDERLUST I would like to share with my students of fashion designing is that every city we visited on our tour such as Kotor, Athens, Split, etc had some form of crafts in the form of souvenirs for the tourists. Reflecting back, can we see our crafts being sold or marketed at public places in any city of India? As students of fashion designing, is it also not part of profession to ensure that our crafts are showcased on a large scale in our cities? Hence, the aspect of promotion and marketing is also very important in our trade and which I think the Europeans have excelled to a large extent. Our crafts need to be marketed to ensure that our age old traditions are showcased to the world and, more importantly, the artisans who create these masterpieces also have a sustained and regular flow of income. Students of fashion design do have a duty towards our gifted artisans in this regard. In Greece, we visited Athens and Olympia, where the world’s first ancient Olympics were held. Both these cities are ancient cities and are also Unesco World Heritage sites. Visiting such sites gives you an insight into the history and culture of these ancient civilizations, which I think are good learning points for students of the design industry. For example in Split, we visited the old town, which again was a Unesco World Heritage site. It was an eye opener to see that such small countries like Greece and Croatia have well preserved their ancient history and culture by maintaining their forts and towns. COMPETE Plus 18 FLY ON THE WALL Take a lesson on humility, Mister We are yet to find one single person on campus that can get along with the transport manager of Karnavati University. We understand it’s a tad difficult to manage a large number of vehicles, staff and different routes but that does not justify his rude behaviour with almost everyone he speaks to! Especially when the President and Vice Chancellor of the University are such humble people! The other day, one of the senior faculty members complained about a dysfunctional air conditioner in the bus, to which the transport manager offered the number of the AC repairer! Another faculty once complained about the lack of curtains on the bus to which the manager had the same response. Yet another staff person mentioned that one of the routes can be altered a bit to fasten transport time, which didn’t go down well with the manager who said that if the staff didn’t shut up, he would consider stopping sending buses to that route. Well, if faculty and staff have to manage the AC and curtains on the bus, then we wonder when they would have time to do their own work! And since the work of the transport manager gets shared, will he also share his revenue with those who share his burden? If not that, we suggest he at least takes a few lessons on how to be a better manager from the heads of the university. Accept a compliment gracefully, please This senior male faculty member loves reminding everyone the number of years of work experience he has! It’s difficult for everyone around him to make a conversation without being reminded that he started his career in the early ‘80s and is still going strong. To add to it, he doesn’t spare anyone from boasting about his past achievements or never misses a chance to mention how he has always been a one-man army and still succeeded at tasks. The other day, when he walked in to his office, one of the female staff gave him a compliment on how sharply he was dressed that day. To which, he replied, “I always dress sharply. I have 30-plus years of work experience and since I began my career in the early ‘80s, I have been receiving compliments on how well I dress.” The embarrassed female staffer was left wondering why she even made an effort to give a compliment. Sir, how about responding with just a “thank you” the next time someone says something nice about you? Some Saturdays are working, ma’am! This new HR policy for faculty and staff members that was introduced since July 1 baffled a few but pleased others. This female faculty member was particularly displeased about two or three working Saturdays in a month. She had gotten so used to getting all weekends off that she would refuse to host workshops or receive guests in her department on Saturdays, in spite of being the department head at that time. Her colleagues were snickering about how she would now have to work on some Saturdays after the new policy was introduced. But she refuses to work on a single Saturday even at the cost of her salary! Now that’s called giving two hoots to your profession!
