Social Emotional Learning (SEL)
Purpose of SEL: We recognize the traumatic impact the COVID-19 global
pandemic has had on our students. During this time, many students are
perplexed by grief, anxiety, and confusion while searching for a sense of
normalcy. To address these concerns, MCPS, along with districts around the
country, has made social emotional learning a priority. To support our schools,
we have developed a Social Emotional learning framework including lessons
and professional development to support the well-being of students.

What is SEL? Social Emotional Learning is the process through which
children and adults acquire and effectively apply the knowledge, attitudes, and
skills necessary to understand and manage emotions, set and achieve
positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain
positive relationships, and make responsible decisions.
Social Emotional Learning (SEL)
❏ Will be taught through Period 8/ Student Advisory

❏ New for Einstein students, as well as most students across MCPS

❏ Will typically be on Tuesdays.

❏ Designed to work on skills that are not explicitly taught in content classes.

❏ Developing skills that will help students be successful in all of their
classes, but may not be directly linked to the curriculum. Skills dealing
with flexibility, resilience, mindfulness, growth mindset, stress
management, etc. to make sure students are being provided tools to be
successful in life in general, but especially in virtual learning.

❏ New for all of us.

❏ Want to make sure that you are managing to the best of your ability and
we are providing support you can use.
