CBE Environmental Policies Operational Expectations 9 9.2 Ensure that facility planning and design decisions appropriately consider environmental impacts, including eco-efficiency and sustainability. Results 3 Citizenship Each student will be a responsible citizen: 3.4 Be responsible stewards of the environment by contributing to its quality and sustainability. 5
CBE Sustainability Framework The Calgary Board of Education will • advance student achievement in sustainability; and • be a leader in sustainable practices and behaviours www.cbe.ab.ca
2020 targets related to the Built Environment • The CBE builds, operates and maintains its buildings in ways that protects the health of building occupants and the environment. • All new construction and major renovation projects are, at a minimum, LEED Silver certified • GHG emissions are reduced by 12% by 2020 (from 2010/2011 levels) • The CBE manages and/or reduces energy consumption to the following energy utilization intensity targets, by 2020: 0.92 GJ/m2 for elementary schools; and 1.08 GJ/m2 for middle/junior and senior high schools • The CBE manages and/or reduces water consumption to 4m3 per student per year, by 2020 • Waste reduction 80% by 2020 • CBE schools reduce their dependency on fossil fuels through the incorporation of photovoltaic systems on schools. 7

ASBA Sustainable Development Policy “The Alberta School Boards Association supports sustainable development and believes subsidies and supports for renewable energy options must be provided. Additionally, all Alberta students must be provided access to an environmental education”. 81% of the 61 school boards in Alberta supported this policy 9

Process Facility Related Project Requests for Your School 1.School has concept for facility related project, i.e. renovation projects and initiatives that introduce change to buildings or school grounds. 2.School administrator contacts their Area FTL for guidance, assistance and information on projects and possible funding sources. 3.FTL enters the project request into Archibus. Please note that paper submissions will not be accepted. Administrator will have access to view project progress in Archibus. 4.The project will require further reviews and approvals. School administrator will be contacted throughout the process. 15
