Information for First Semester Students In this presentation: • entrance tests • PO 2015 Module 1 (M1) • signing up for Module 1 seminars • PO 2015 Module 1 Exam • general information 2
Entrance Tests • everyone must take test – even if you have taken the EULA test • indication of how you will cope with studying English • 2 parts: a) written b) speaking 3
Entrance Tests • written test: today, 11:00 (immediately after this info session) in KA 102 • speaking test: this week • sign up at end of meeting - note time/room • copy of speaking timetables on noticeboard next to KG4 224 4
Written Test no special preparation required part 1: gap-filling part 2: identifying mistakes (multiple choice) tests grammar, range of vocabulary, accuracy time: one hour 5
Speaking Test • time: about 10 minutes • 2 students together • picture provided when you come in • use picture as basis for discussion with partner • examiner takes notes and only asks questions if communication breaks down or to even up any imbalance 6
After the Speaking Test • feedback on speaking and writing at end of speaking test • ranking on writing test • grammar, fluency, pronunciation – areas to work on to meet Module 1 language requirements • copy your feedback sheet for English Discourse Competence (EDC) teacher 7

Signing up for M1 sign up on LSF o by 18 April 2019, 12:00 o for introductory lectures o for English Discourse Competence give several seminar options o check LSF later in the week
English Discourse Competence classes start on Tuesday so check LSF and emails before Tuesday must attend first session to secure place • must have done entrance test to start English Discourse Competence • needed for Module 1 Speaking • taught by native speakers • no intention to teach particular accent 12
PO 2015 M1 Exam • 1 written exam for the 2 lectures, plus a language section • speaking exam and language section of written exam based on English Discourse Competence seminar • both exams must be taken in same semester 13
M1 Written Exam 3 parts exam strategy – most confident part first language section = 30 minutes o gap-filling, multiple choice o take note of feedback from entrance test
M1 Speaking Exam reading short passage aloud short conversation in pairs includes questions on reading assignments from EDC
Sign up for M1 Exam sign up in June o for speaking in English Discourse Competence (EDC) seminar o if not in EDC seminar (e.g. if retaking), see English department webpage for information o for written sign up on LSF – details will be given on English department webpage
M1 Feedback • be informed by feedback, whether pass or not • feedback on M1 speaking with EDC teacher/ first examiner • Einsicht of written section • sign up for courses in LSF round 1 even if before M1 results out 17
What to do if you fail • does not always make sense to repeat EDC (see new course EDC Consolidation 2+) • can retake M1 and take M2 courses at same time • bear in mind this means revising for M1 exam and preparing M2 portfolio at same time 18
After M1 • plan ahead • E.g. link between M2 and M4 (Classroom Action Research Projects) • sequence of modules • credits from study abroad for selected modules (see webpage for details) 19
Going Abroad • apply a year in advance for UK/Ireland (more for USA) • for UK/Ireland apply November 2019 for WS 2020/21 • UK/Ireland information meeting in October 2019 • most programmes start in winter semester 20
