We want to make your
roads safer for everyone
who uses them. On some
roads we’re doing this with
safety improvements like rumble
strips, but on State Highway 88

                                     this road.*

What we know
There are a lot of heavy vehicles using this section of
highway and plenty of people walking around the town
during the cruise ship season. There’s a steep rise in
the road which means drivers don’t have a clear view of
everything ahead. We also know some elderly people
find it tricky to cross this busy road.

What we’re proposing *2018 data is not yet complete. Data is for crashes as recorded in CAS at 31/07/2019.

Based on what we know and what you’ve told us, we’re proposing the following change

PROPOSED A new 40km/h speed limit on a 600m section of SH88 from 95m west of Wickliffe Terrace to the railway
 CHANGE
crossing on Beach Street. The proposed 40km/h speed limit is a reduction from the current legal limit
                   of 50km/h.
Is there anything else that we should consider when making our decision?
The Government is spending $1.4 billion over three years to make high-risk roads safer.

                               No matter what
                            causes a crash, speed
                            can be the difference
                          between walking away or
                             being carried away.
                           Speed also reduces the
time you have to react to
                             a mistake – yours or
                               someone else’s.
