Autumn Term 1 - Year 1/2 Homework 6th September 2021 Dear Parents, Homework this term is designed to: • support your child’s learning in class; • improve their speed of processing skills and quick mental recall; • increase their opportunities to read for pleasure, which improves speed of reading, sight vocabulary, spelling recall and help enhances creative writing and knowledge of the world. • Homework to be completed weekly: • 5 reads a week • Spelling booklet weekly (5 mins a day) • Common exception words (5 mins a day) • Phonics (5 mins a day) • Times Table Rock stars (Year 2 only – 3 times a week) We actively encourage parents and carers to support their child’s reading by listening to them read at least five times a week. We aim for all our children to develop a love of literature through widespread reading. This could include listening to them read their bookbag book, as well as sharing a bed time story and more advanced literature to promote an enjoyment for reading. Each week your child will have a list of spellings to practice at home, which they will be tested on every Friday at school. Please ensure you spend at least 5 minutes each day supporting your child with these spellings; this might include discussing the meanings and writing them in a sentence. There are lists of common exception words that your child is expected to know by the end of their school year. They must be able to read and write them without sounding them out phonetically. We will test your child on their age appropriate common exception words and inform you if there are any that we feel you should particularly focus on. We ask that you spend 5 minutes each day practicing and revisiting them to ensure your child can consistently read and spell them correctly and at pace. Phonics is the foundations to reading and writing so we also ask that you spend 5 minutes each day practicing with your child. As we transition to a new phonics scheme, there may be specific sounds that we send your child home with to practice. There will be resources on the website to support you with the sounds that you can be revisiting at home. Year 2 children will have a Times Table Rockstar log in that they must access at least 3 times a week – there is a leader board and children can be particularly competitive about this! We will have a times table test each Friday, so if your child is in year 1 we ask that you still practice their 2s, 5s and 10s times tables at home. You can begin by chanting these and then practice testing your child on them out of order. I hope you are able to support your child at home, as I support them with all their hard work in class. As always if you should feel the need to come and talk to me, please catch me after school or make an appointment with the office. I will endeavour to get back to parents as soon as possible. Kind regards Miss Toon Class 2 Teacher
HOME-LEARNING PROJECT EVALUATION (evaluation = critical thinking, being reflective) This term, I want you to bake some bread with your grown up – just like they did in Pudding Lane, but without the big fire! You will need to follow a recipe, weigh the ingredients, leave it to rise and bake the bread. You can add any additional ingredients such as spices, fruit and nuts. Then you must bring it in on Friday 8th October for the rest of the class to taste. Name: Date: Theme: Project Title: Why did you choose to present your project this way? Which skills did you use and why? (tick or highlight and explain how you used these skills. For example, team work my sister held the pieces together while I added the glue). You do not have to have used all of them!
