ARDMORE PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH 10:30 A.M., AUGUST 22, 2021 - Twenty-first Sunday in Ordinary Time
Welcome to Ardmore Presbyterian Church Welcome to worship at Ardmore Presbyterian Church! We are delighted you are
joining us for worship this morning—whether you are physically present with us
here in the sanctuary, or whether you’re livestreaming the service from home! The
people of God are resilient because Jesus was, is, and will continue to be Lord of
the Church. The Holy Spirit gifts Jesus-followers with praise, song, and prayer
either in a sanctuary or at home on the computer. Over the centuries, Christians
have worshipped in catacombs, homes, prison cells, desert monasteries, gothic
cathedrals, country churches, and now, via the Internet. This virus will one day
pass, but until that day arrives, let us be encouraged in Christ’s reign. Please find
ways to remain connected with each other, your faith, and church. Like those who
have gathered for 2000 years in unusual places, let us worship God!
A message from Rev. Jason Grimes

 OPENING PRAYER

*CALL TO WORSHIP (from Psalm 46) Cathie Calkins
God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.
Therefore we will not fear, though the earth should change, though the mountains
       shake in the heart of the sea;
Though its waters roar and foam, though the mountains tremble with its tumult.
There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, the holy habitation of the
       Most High.
God is in the midst of the city; it shall not be moved; God will help it when the
       morning dawns.
The nations are in an uproar, the kingdoms totter; he utters his voice, the earth melts.
The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge.
Be still, and know that I am God! I am exalted among the nations, I am exalted in
the earth. The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge.

CALL TO CONFESSION (from James 5)
James writes to the church, “Therefore confess your sins to one another, and pray for
one another, so that you may be healed.” In penitence and in faith, let us pray to
  Christ.

 PRAYER OF CONFESSION
We pour our hearts before you, O God; you are our refuge and strength. Waves
of doubt beat against us, weakening our faith. Tremors of discord shake our
foundation. The winds of temptation drive us from our course. Too often we rely
on ourselves when wisdom is sought. Still the storms of our souls! Provide in Christ
a haven of hope for our troubled and distracted spirits. Amen. (James G. Kirk)
                                                                                                            3
ARDMORE PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH 10:30 A.M., AUGUST 22, 2021 - Twenty-first Sunday in Ordinary Time
ASSURANCE OF PARDON (from Micah 7)
The prophet Micah proclaims, “You do not stay angry forever but delight to show
mercy. You will again have compassion on us; you will tread our sins underfoot and
hurl all our iniquities into the depths of the sea.” Friends, in Jesus Christ we are
       forgiven!

*PASSING OF THE PEACE (from Colossians 3)
Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts. To this peace we were called as members of
       a single body.

The peace of Christ be with you.
       Peace be with you.
(Call two people in our church community today and pass the peace of Christ.)

RESPONSE, Solo O Sing a Song of Galilee KINGSFOLD
O sing a song of Galilee, For though, like waves on Galilee,
Of lake and woods and hill, Dark seas of trouble roll,
Of Him who walked upon the sea When faith has heard the Master’s word,
And bade its waves be still: Falls peace upon the soul.

     CHILDREN’S MESSAGE

                                 THE WORD PROCLAIMED

     PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION
God our helper, show us your ways and teach us your paths. By your Holy Spirit, open
our minds that we may be led in your truth and taught your will. Then may we praise
you by listening to your Word and obeying it; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

     FIRST READING, Jonah 1:1-6
Now the word of the LORD came to Jonah son of Amittai, saying, “Go at once
to Nineveh, that great city, and cry out against it; for their wickedness has come up
before me.” But Jonah set out to flee to Tarshish from the presence of the LORD.
He went down to Joppa and found a ship going to Tarshish; so he paid his fare and
went on board, to go with them to Tarshish, away from the presence of the LORD.
But the LORD hurled a great wind upon the sea, and such a mighty storm came
upon the sea that the ship threatened to break up. Then the mariners were afraid, and
each cried to his god. They threw the cargo that was in the ship into the sea, to lighten
4
it for them. Jonah, meanwhile, had gone down into the hold of the ship and had lain
down, and was fast asleep. The captain came and said to him, “What are you doing
sound asleep? Get up, call on your god! Perhaps the god will spare us a thought so that
  we do not perish.”

ANTHEM, Solo But the Lord Is Mindful of His Own (St. Paul) Felix Mendelssohn (1836)
                             Kathy Wagner, Mezzo-soprano
But the Lord is mindful of His own, He remembers His children.
Bow down before Him, ye mighty, for the Lord is near us.
                       (Psalm 115:12; II Timothy 2:19; Philippians 4:5)

SECOND READING, Acts 27:1-21
When it was decided that we were to sail for Italy, they transferred Paul and some
other prisoners to a centurion of the Augustan Cohort, named Julius. Embarking on
a ship of Adramyttium that was about to set sail to the ports along the coast of Asia,
we put to sea, accompanied by Aristarchus, a Macedonian from Thessalonica. The
next day we put in at Sidon; and Julius treated Paul kindly, and allowed him to go to
his friends to be cared for. Putting out to sea from there, we sailed under the lee of
Cyprus, because the winds were against us. After we had sailed across the sea that is
off Cilicia and Pamphylia, we came to Myra in Lycia. There the centurion found an
Alexandrian ship bound for Italy and put us on board. We sailed slowly for a number
of days and arrived with difficulty off Cnidus, and as the wind was against us, we
sailed under the lee of Crete off Salmone. Sailing past it with difficulty, we came to
a place called Fair Havens, near the city of Lasea.
Since much time had been lost and sailing was now dangerous, because even the
Fast had already gone by, Paul advised them, saying, “Sirs, I can see that the voyage
will be with danger and much heavy loss, not only of the cargo and the ship, but also
of our lives.” But the centurion paid more attention to the pilot and to the owner of
the ship than to what Paul said. Since the harbor was not suitable for spending the
winter, the majority was in favor of putting to sea from there, on the chance that
somehow they could reach Phoenix, where they could spend the winter. It was a
harbor of Crete, facing southwest and northwest.
When a moderate south wind began to blow, they thought they could achieve
their purpose; so they weighed anchor and began to sail past Crete, close to the
shore. But soon a violent wind, called the northeaster, rushed down from Crete. Since
the ship was caught and could not be turned head-on into the wind, we gave way to it
and were driven. By running under the lee of a small island called Cauda we were
                                                                                             5
scarcely able to get the ship’s boat under control. After hoisting it up they took
measures to undergird the ship; then, fearing that they would run on the Syrtis, they
lowered the sea anchor and so were driven. We were being pounded by the storm so
violently that on the next day they began to throw the cargo overboard, and on the
third day with their own hands they threw the ship’s tackle overboard. When neither
sun nor stars appeared for many days, and no small tempest raged, all hope of our
being saved was at last abandoned.
Since they had been without food for a long time, Paul then stood up among them
and said, “Men, you should have listened to me and not have set sail from Crete and
thereby avoided this damage and loss.”

     THIRD READING, Matthew 8:23-27
And when he got into the boat, his disciples followed him. A windstorm arose on
the sea, so great that the boat was being swamped by the waves; but he was asleep. And
they went and woke him up, saying, “Lord, save us! We are perishing!” And he said to
them, “Why are you afraid, you of little faith?” Then he got up and rebuked the winds
and the sea; and there was a dead calm. They were amazed, saying, “What sort of man
is this, that even the winds and the sea obey him?”

This is the Word of the Lord.
       Thanks be to God.

*AFFIRMATION OF FAITH (The Apostles’ Creed)
I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus
Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the
Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he
descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into
heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he
shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy
catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection
of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

PREPARING TO MAKE OUR OFFERING TO GOD

OFFERTORY, Solo With What Shall I Come Before the Lord Beck/Courtney (1990)
With what shall I come before the Lord,
and bow myself before God on high?
Shall I come before Him with burnt offerings,
shall I come before Him with yearling calves?
Will the Lord be pleased with thousands of rams,
with ten thousand rivers of oil?
Shall I give Him my firstborn for my transgressions,
the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul?
He has shown you, O man; He has shown you what is good.
And what does the Lord require of you but to do justice,
and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?

Music Service in Hershey, and is Assistant Professor of Music at
Millersville University of PA. In demand as a substitute organist

                              Sanctuary Village Fundraiser
Sanctuary Village is having a fundraiser, which
involves the collection of new or gently used shoes.
We are calling the fundraiser “Soles for Souls!”
This fundraiser benefits our building a community
of Tiny Houses in Philadelphia for people who are experiencing chronic street home-
     lessness.
There will be a container to collect shoes (new or gently used), in the church office. If
the container is getting filled, Schaunel Steinnagel will take the shoes and bag them up
for collection/storage, so that more shoes can be donated! The collection will run
     approximately through August and September.
Sanctuary Village will be paid by the pound for the shoes collected. The shoes will be
shipped abroad to be sold by small business owners to provide earnings for them as
well as affordable shoes for their customers. This is a win-win-win opportunity as it
helps Sanctuary Village, these vendors, and the planet by not having unwanted shoes
     end up in landfills.
                                         Thank you very much!
Any questions, contact Rev. Schaunel Steinnagel, RVschaunel@aol.com, 302-463-0542.
