April 18, 2021 Third Sunday of Easter From the Pastors Desk Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, Unfortunately, last week’s column turned into a rerun, but that allows me to say, “Alleluia!” this week. We are, after all, still in our Easter season, and will be until Pentecost Sunday, May 23rd, so we continue to live in the light of the Resurrection in a special way for the next month and a half. It is no accident that God has given us the great gift of Spring, and the rebirth of nature to accompany us on our Easter journey; after all God knows everything. Speaking of Spring, one of the wonderful gifts I have is being able to look out the rectory windows and see the Magnolias in bloom. There is something about these wonderful trees that refresh the spirit, possibly because they are among the first to bloom. I do have concerns however, for the flowering plums that run along the south side of the church, which give off beautiful flowers and fragrance in the Spring. Because of their size, I believe they must have been planted when the church was built in the late sixties, and being as old as they are, they needed some attention. A number of the limbs had experienced rot, that had to be removed before it continued to spread, and there was a need to trim back a little radically, but I was also assured that they would come back better than before. The problem I have, is that I look out and see these trees, that only last year produced so many flowers, even though they were sick, and I only see bare limbs. And I wait to see the flowers and leaves come and bring life to the tree. Before I begin sounding like Chauncey Gardiner, let me hop off the topic, and if anyone is wondering who Chauncey Gardiner is, he’s the main character from Jerzy Kosinski’s book Being There. What we can take away from all of it, is that as Christians, we live in the light of the Resurrection throughout the year, but in this time above others, we have the advantage of nature’s encouragement. Even though we find it difficult to see the hope held out in store for us, that does not mean that we give up, only that we continue to look through the darkness for the light that continues to direct us. Sometimes we may even thing that everything is lost, that everything we knew, or were familiar with is destroyed. It would have seemed that way to the Apostles on Good Friday, when the person they had accompanied for three years, the one they put their hopes in, was nailed to a tree and killed. But we have the ad- vantage over the Apostles, we know about the Resurrection. One event that has given me hope for the future of the parish is that we have hired on a new Director of Religious Edu- cation, to replace Madlyn D’Ambrose, who retired last Spring. Soon everyone will have the opportunity to meet Millie Lopez, who comes to us with a degree in Theology from Salesian University in Italy, experience in Religious Education and an amazing energy. Once we have celebrated the First Communions next Saturday, we will begin the process of enrollment for the Fall, and will be contacting catechists. Even with the hardships of Covid, we have managed to move forward as a parish, and with Christ as our desire and our guide, we will continue to improve, grow and expand this community of faith for years to come. As your pastor, I encourage each of you to commit yourselves to deepening your relationship with Jesus Christ, and with each other; we are a Eucharistic Community, the Body of Christ in Patchogue, North Patchogue, East Patchogue, Medford, Holbrook and Holtsville. Pax, Fr. Henry
