The Walk: Footprints of Welcome- Teacher Guide What is The Walk? At the heart of The Walk is ‘Little Amal’, a 3.5 metre-tall puppet of a young refugee girl, created by the acclaimed Handspring Puppet Company. Representing all displaced children, many separated from their families, Little Amal is walking across Turkey, Greece, Italy, France, Switzerland, Germany, Belgium and the UK, with a finale event in Manchester, England in November 2021. She is travelling a remarkable 8,000km in total, celebrating the power of art and shared humanity wherever she goes. At this time of unprecedented global change, The Walk is an artistic response: a cultural odyssey transcending borders, politics and language to tell a new story of shared humanity – and to ensure the world doesn’t forget the millions of displaced children, each with their own story. What are ‘Footprints of Welcome?’ Derived from an original idea by two teachers at Earlsdon Primary, Coventry, ‘Footprints of Welcome’ is a design challenge suitable for a range of age groups. We are asking pupils to think about what messages of welcome they would want to present to Little Amal, and then decorate footprint templates with these messages. The project has various triggers including MFL and PSHE strains, as well as being a creative opportunity.
How does it work? First, watch this intro video with Earlsdon Primary school on the City of Culture website https://coventry2021.co.uk/get-involved/key-stage-2/the-walk-footprints-of-welcome/ Then, there are three main steps to completing the Footprints: Step One: Discuss the themes. It is important that this is not just an uninformed design activity- before beginning their footprints we would like the children to have engaged in thinking not just about the refugee issue, but about themselves and their identity- what would their welcome to Amal look like? Some questions to help consider What is special about you? What is special about your area or your city? If someone came to you house, how would you welcome them? What would you tell Amal about yourself? What would you show her, in Coventry? What do you think she would tell you? If you went to a foreign country, how would you like to be welcomed? What do you think Amal can offer us in exchange? To aid your classroom activities, there are a wealth of brilliant resources all in one place on the The Walk website, https://www.walkwithamal.org/education/activity-pack/
Step Two: Create the Footprints Using the simple template, (found at the end of this document) footprints can be decorated in a variety of ways. The template is planned to be used as an individual thing, but you many choose to approach the task as a group activity. Please consider printing the footprints larger if possible. The activity works as a collage or painting activity- why not look at The Walk website for some potential images to use or inspire? What languages could you write your welcome in? How would you make your welcome message stand out? Are there any particular colours that would be relevant? Why? (eg colours of flags, seasons, costume?) Step Three: Display the Footprints We would like the Footprints to be displayed everywhere- in school, on exterior-facing windows, shared electronically. You can post photos on social media and tag @walkwithamal using #actsofwelcome #Little Amal. There is also a dedicated ‘Footprints of Welcome’ gallery on the Coventry Digital website. To register go to https://coventry.digital/register/ then email ac4693@coventry.ac.uk and you will be able to upload your designs alongside other schools taking part. You can also send us pictures of any school displays or tell us the story of how you approached the project by filling out our ‘Schools Stories’ from here: https://coventry2021.co.uk/get-involved/stories/
