East Central BOCES 2019 Spring Offerings April 8: Robotics for Secondary Teachers Robotics can be used to enhance any secondary classroom by teaching basic coding skills which, in turn, teach organization, sequencing, language, and grammar and help prepare students for the world at large. This training from MindSpark Learning will introduce teachers to how to implement robotics in the classroom. Sign up for one of these trainings to learning’s how to advance your knowledge and for a chance to take home a robotics or coding kit. Lunch and recertification credit will be given. April 18: Incorporating Circuitry and Robotics into the Secondary Classroom Circuity and robotics can be used to enhance any secondary classroom by teaching basic coding skills which, in turn, teach organization, sequencing, language, and grammar and help prepare students for the world at large. This training from MindSpark Learning will introduce teachers to how to use Raspberry Pi, Makey Makey circuitry, scratch coding and implement robotics in the classroom. Sign up for one of these trainings to learning’s how to advance your knowledge and for a chance to take home a robotics or coding kit. Lunch and recertification credit will be offered. April 29: 3D Printer/Laser Printer for the Secondary Classroom At East Central BOCES, we have a Glowforge Pro and two Lulzbot Taz 6 and we are using them to create cool stuff. Now you can too! Plus, 3D printing and laser printing are not only the future of manufacturing, they are the future of design, medicine and STEM education. This training from MindSpark Learning will go over some basic usage and ideas for where you can use them in the classroom. Incorporate tools into your secondary classroom that help prepare your students for the future and maybe walk away with a 3D printer of your own…there will be several giveaways during the day. Lunch and recertification will be offered. May 30-31: Problem-Based Learning for the Secondary Classroom This two-day training from MindSpark learning will support participants in developing a strong understanding of the problem-based learning (PBL) model, and how to partner with industry leaders in their community so they can bring authentic learning experiences to their secondary classrooms and schools. Come to learn about engaging your students in a learning experience and for the chance to take away some STEM tools to engage your students. Recertification credit will be offered. East Central BOCES 2019 Summer Offerings June 4: EL PD in Bennett June 5: EL PD in Burlington June 6: EL PD AT THE LIMON SCHOOL (Not at the BOCES) Stipend, Lunch and Recertification Hours Provided. Put one of these EL PD opportunities on your calendar and register on the EC BOCES website. Brad Russel, the ELD Coordinator at the Mapleton School District, will present Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol (SIOP) strategies. The SIOP model is a research-based and validated instructional model that has proven effective in addressing the academic needs of English learners. The sessions will take place at Bennett, Limon, and Burlington and will provide 6.5 hours of EL PD. All of the content will be the same, so just choose and register for one day of training. If you cannot attend the training in your area, you have the option to attend one of the others. Teachers renewing their license in the areas of elementary education, English language arts, math, science, and social studies will need 45 hours of EL PD to renew their teaching license. June 10: Lori Cook Math Training for Elementary Teachers June 11: Lori Cook Math Training for Secondary Teachers 9am to 3pm at East Central BOCES West Training Room Stipend, Lunch and 6 Recertification Hours Provided During the 2018-19 school year, Lori Cook has provided professional development in these areas: Teachers spent time with Lori Cook discovering how to: Create growth mindsets in the math classroom Develop rigorous learning cycles that include problem solving, conceptual understanding, and develop computational fluency of mathematical concepts Design mathematical environments where students are EmpowerED to persevere and explore math Evaluate the impact of teaching and learning using student evidence Investigate how to work-out the whole brain in the mathematics class no matter what the age. Dig into the latest research and learn how to create an environment that stimulates the entire brain and allows students to develop relational understanding. Investigate strategies and structures that support the K-12 mathematics classroom as we strive to teach through problem solving and create empowered mathematicians. June 12: Support in Reading with Isaac Wells for Grades K-2 June 13: Support in Reading with Isaac Wells for Grades 3-5 June 14: Support in Reading with Isaac Wells for Secondary 9am to 3pm at East Central BOCES West Training Room Stipend, Lunch and 6 Recertification Hours Provided During the 2018-19 school year, Isaac Wells provided professional development in these areas: Working on Guided Reading will build a strong vertical connection K-5 and the work with Comprehension and Collaboration will do the same for Secondary Teachers. The connection K-12 is the focus on increasing students’ independence and ensuring that readers can answer the three feedback questions: Where am I? Where am I going? How am I getting there?
