Scholarships Program – June 2020 Promotion Promoting Scholarships Programs in COVID-19 We have a significant challenge promoting student entries from our Middle Schools and High Schools due to the pandemic. Check your School Districts website for any changes in the school year, some schools are starting the fall term as early as July. School contacts are your most valuable resource; if you don’t have one established already, phone your local schools, let them know what you’re doing and who would be the best person to promote the scholarships. Don’t forget to mention the award amounts, local and national, which are always impressive! Voice of Democracy National Winner - $30,000 Patriot’s Pen National Winner - $5,000 Young American Patriotic Art Contest - $15,000 Voice of Democracy and Patriot’s Pen entry deadline of October 31 might seem far off, but these difficult times demand as much lead time as possible. Lay down the groundwork and focus on getting materials out to students by contacting previous winners and through family members, neighbors and friends. Patriotic Art Entry deadline is March 31, 2021, but get a head start by including the information with the Voice of Democracy. Most High Schools have a college guidance counselor looking for scholarships for students. Partner with your Post and Auxiliary Chairman. The VFW sponsors the Voice of Democracy and Patriot’s Pen program and appreciates the support of the Auxiliary. Auxiliary Memberships Chairman can use the Continuing Education Scholarship (the application process begins July 1) to entice new members. Youth Activities Chairman can help promote the scholarships with youth groups. The Continuing Education Scholarship report should include any promotion or publications. Voice of Democracy and Patriot’s Pen should include number of members involved and volunteer hours assisting posts promoting the program. Patriotic Art reports should include members involved, hours volunteered, student entries and dollar amount awarded to students. All reports should include use of media to promote contests in community, what type and awards ceremonies and recognition. Social Media increasingly plays an important role in getting the good word out. I have a Facebook page! Search for Voice of Democracy/Patriot’s Pen – California, feel free to forward cool photos of activities your auxiliary is doing for the students and I’ll post them. An updated Sample Social Media Posts for VFW Auxiliary and VFW Scholarships follows, there is one on the Auxiliary Resources page, but I’ve updated this one with the 2020-21 themes and deadlines. Just plug in your contact info and Post number. The best resources can be found on the VFW Auxiliary Resources page, including all the applications and contest rules.
