Welcome to the second semester first-year students Ms Rochelle Wessels STUDENT RETENTION UNIT (SRU) A FIRST-YEAR EXPERIENCE (FYE) INITIATIVE 1
Why a FYE @ Unisa? It has become common knowledge that many first-year students experience challenges when transitioning into a new learning environment, especially those entering ODeL institutions. 2
Who are we? The Student Retention Unit (SRU) is situated within the portfolio of the Department of Tuition Support and Facilitation of Learning (DTSFL). The SRU is responsible for the implementation and coordination of the First Year Experience (FYE) programme at the institution. The First-Year Experience @ Unisa 5
The vision of the SRU and the FYE is… … to enhance the success and retention of students with a mandate to forge a generation of highly successful students at Unisa 6

Weekly Emails and Live Broadcasts You will receive just-in-time information regarding the relevant support interventions throughout the academic year. Interventions achieved through customised e-mails and live broadcasts will not only encourage contact between yourself and the institution, but also address your specific needs and positively impact on your studies. 10
Weekly Emails… These emails have been designed with the first-year student in mind, aimed at providing pertinent information at key points through your student walk. Please check your myLife email accounts on a regular basis to keep abreast of important information 11
Perhaps you don’t check your myLife account regularly … Why not consider forwarding your myLife emails to a personal or work email address? 12
