Term 2, Issue 12 Tuesday 11th May 2021 Straight into it!!! Playgroup NAPLAN - The Reality!!! Monday & Friday now This week, all Year 3, 5, 7 and 9 children across Australia will be 9am - 11am completing their NAPLAN Assessments in Reading, writing, Grammar & Punctuation, Spelling and Numeracy. Its mad at my house...we have a Year May 3, 5 and 9 in the house (good thing our Yer 8 Lola is on Camp!!!). Thurs 13th @ 8.30 - 10am While NAPLAN is fantastic for the Government because it gives nationwide Uniform Shop open comparative data, it can be a stressful time for students and families. In my time, I have seen students that struggle do unbelievably well and I have Fri 14th @ 2.40pm students who are particularly bright do rather poorly on their NAPLAN tests. Assembly - 3/4JR I guess what I’m saying is that NAPLAN tests your child for 45 minutes on a Mon 17th @ 3.30 - 4.30pm given subject on one day. I have always found it to be reasonably accurate, Confirmation Family Session but there are always exceptions or children who just simply have either a BRILLIANT or a bad day. Tues 18th @ 9 - 10am Community Conversations I love NAPLAN from a school’s perspective. It gives us a really good Please come along! understanding of how we are travelling as a school, for example: are we doing well with spelling, why is our multiplication not as good as our division Tues 18th @ 2pm etc. NAPLAN is more about the BIG PICTURE of education rather than the Andrew Chinn Concert with individual students, so there is no need to have huge amounts of stress the Students in the Church around it on the home front. Just do your best to make sure your kids are as relaxed as possible, have a good night sleep beforehand and have a good All welcome! breakfast! NAPLAN results usually come out just before the end of Term 3. Thurs 20th 8.30 - 10am When we get them, we get them straight to you! If you have any questions, Uniform Shop open don’t hesitate to contact Rena Walsh, our Learning & Teaching Leader. Fri 21st Scienceworks Competition District X Country Today, Ms Ferreira has taken some of our Mon 24th students to Scienceworks for competition School Closure Day related to their STEM work. STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Report Writing Day Mathematics) is having a huge educational Tues 25th push as it is seen as the future of Year 6 Confirmation employment in Australia and indeed, globally. We look forward to seeing how Reflection Day they go!!! Year 3/4 Book Club with Dandenong Library At St Mary’s we have had a long established relationship with Dandenong Library as one of our many partnerships and they do amazing work with us. Every Monday afternoon, we have a visitor come and read through a book with the students and discuss different elements of the book. At the moment, we have Sara who has taken over from Trent, and the kids love every minute of it! Have a wonderful week, Terry Mr Gardiner’s Rib Ticklers… Mr Gardiner: Excuse me Mrs Canty… Mrs Canty: Yes Mr Gardiner? What is it? Mr Gardiner: Would you like to hear a joke about paper? Mrs Canty: Ummmm...yes, ok...but I hope its better than most of your other jokes. Mr Gardiner: Oh...ok...don’t worry about it then, because its tear-able...get it? Terrible? TEARable? Paper is tear-able!!! Ba-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha…
