Adult Smoking Rates ♥ Nationally 20% of adults in the UK currently smoke (ONS 2012) : ♥ 21% men ♥ 19% women ♥ In the North West the smoking prevalence is higher at 22% (ONS 2012) ♥ Smoking accounts for half difference in life expectancy between social classes I & V (Wanless, 2004) ♥ 29% of routine & manual men smoke compared to 14% in managerial & professional occupations (ONS 2012)
Smokefree Squad Pilot ♥ Health Act 2006 – Covered stands went smokefree by 1st July 2007 ♥ Smokefree Squad pilot: ♥ Stop smoking brief intervention training ♥ Public facing social marketing campaign ♥ Two NW sports stadia: ♥ Langtree Park - St Helens Rugby League Club (smokefree) ♥ Old Trafford – Lancashire County Cricket Club (smoking allowed out of sight of playing area)
Project Aims Increase awareness of the benefits of being smokefree & the availability of stop smoking services among stadia staff, fans and the local community Signpost smokers who want to quit to Local Stop Smoking Services ♥ De-normalise smoking among children & young people & empower them to stay smokefree
Social Marketing Campaign Focus group with 18 staff from Saints and LCCC to develop programme resources: 8,000 Z-cards with match fixtures 8,000 Top Trumps cards Posters with QR code Stands with banners T-shirts & caps Web page Programme article Twitter Feed (inc Mascots) Launch press release
Brief Intervention Training 90 minute interactive session: Smokefree quiz Quit smoking support Today I Can 4-minute film A brief intervention inc role-play Trainees role Dealing with potential conflict Training resources: Tobacco free toolkit A6 diary to record no. of people given advice & support over three-month period 4 sessions undertaken with 43 stewards & community coaches

Programme Outputs: Saints Over 3 month period: ♥ 2,058 people given Stop Smoking advice: ♥ Stewards – 821 ♥ Community Coaches – 1,237 ♥ 77 referrals to Stop Smoking Services: ♥ Cheshire & Merseyside – 47 ♥ Out of area- 30 ♥ 47 C&M referrals: ♥ Didn’t set a quit date – 23 ♥ Lost to follow up – 2 ♥ Relapsed – 15 ♥ Quit - 7 ♥ Lifetime benefit of quits - £520,800 (DH, 2011)
Programme Roll Out ♥ Tranmere Rovers Football Club ♥ Eight-week programme, mid-February to March 2013 ♥ 16 Stewards & community coaches trained ♥ Stop Smoking Service match day support ♥ Stop smoking drop in clinic at Prenton Park, 5.30-7.30pm, every Thursday
