                                              WELCOME
Good morning and welcome to Grace! We are glad that you joined with us today, whether
online or here at Grace. If you would like to learn more about the Christian faith as taught here at
Grace Lutheran Church, please contact our pastor. We want you to know that though we have begun
worshiping “in-person” we will be streaming via YouTube a service for those of you who remain
concerned about gathering at church.
                                         HOLY COMMUNION
The Sacrament of Holy Communion is celebrated in our Service this morning. If you are
not a member of Grace and desire to receive this Sacrament of Christ’s body and blood given and
shed for the forgiveness of sins, we ask that you first speak with our Pastor so that the unity of faith
might be established. Thank you for honoring this request.

                           SECOND SUNDAY AFTER THE EPIPHANY
                                     (16 January 2022)

                                           Exodus 33:12–23
                                           Ephesians 5:22–33
                                             John 2:1–11

Jesus’ First Miracle Reveals God’s Glory

The coming of the Messianic kingdom means the restoration of creation. The sign of this restoration is
that “the mountains shall drip sweet wine” (Amos 9:11–15). When the elements of a fallen creation
fail and run short at a wedding feast, our Lord Jesus steps in to restore creation and miraculously
changes water into an abundance of the very best wine (John 2:1–11). With this sign, Christ manifests
His glory. The “back” of God (Ex. 33:12–23) is revealed to those who believe. The hour will come
when Jesus will again manifest His glory by taking creation’s curse into His own body to release us
from its power. The Bridegroom will give His life for the Bride (Eph. 5:22–32), and from His side will
flow water and blood, the holy sacraments by which she is cleansed and made one with Him. Through
this sacrificial love of Christ we are enabled to “love one another with brotherly affection . . .” and to
“outdo one another in showing honor” (Rom. 12:6–16).

Confession of Sins

P O almighty God, merciful Father,
C I, a poor, miserable sinner, confess unto You all my sins and iniquities with which I
have ever offended You and justly deserved Your temporal and eternal punishment.
But I am heartily sorry for them and sincerely repent of them, and I pray You of
Your boundless mercy and for the sake of the holy, innocent, bitter sufferings and
death of Your beloved Son, Jesus Christ, to be gracious and merciful to me, a poor,
              sinful being.

Absolution [John 20:19–23]

P Upon this your confession, I, by virtue of my office, as a called and ordained servant of
the Word, announce the grace of God unto all of you, and in the stead and by the command
of my Lord Jesus Christ I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the T
Son and of the Holy Spirit.
        C Amen.

Old Testament Reading Exodus 33:12–23

Moses said to the LORD, “See, you say to me, ‘Bring up this people,’ but you have not let
me know whom you will send with me. Yet you have said, ‘I know you by name, and you have
also found favor in my sight.’ Now therefore, if I have found favor in your sight, please show
me now your ways, that I may know you in order to find favor in your sight. Consider too that
this nation is your people.” And he said, “My presence will go with you, and I will give you
rest.” And he said to him, “If your presence will not go with me, do not bring us up from here.
For how shall it be known that I have found favor in your sight, I and your people? Is it not in
your going with us, so that we are distinct, I and your people, from every other people on the
          face of the earth?”
And the LORD said to Moses, “This very thing that you have spoken I will do, for you have
found favor in my sight, and I know you by name.” Moses said, “Please show me your glory.”
And he said, “I will make all my goodness pass before you and will proclaim before you my
name ‘The LORD.’ And I will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and will show mercy on
whom I will show mercy. But,” he said, “you cannot see my face, for man shall not see me and
live.” And the LORD said, “Behold, there is a place by me where you shall stand on the rock,
and while my glory passes by I will put you in a cleft of the rock, and I will cover you with my
hand until I have passed by. Then I will take away my hand, and you shall see my back, but my
          face shall not be seen.”

P This is the Word of the Lord.
          C Thanks be to God.

Gradual Psalm 107:20–21

He sent out his word and | healed them,*
and delivered them from their de- | struction.
Let them thank the LORD for his | steadfast love,*
for his wondrous works to the chil- | dren of men!

Epistle Ephesians 5:22–33

Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife
even as Christ is the head of the church, his body, and is himself its Savior. Now as the church
submits to Christ, so also wives should submit in everything to their husbands.
Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her, that he
might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word, so that he might
present the church to himself in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or any such thing, that she
might be holy and without blemish. In the same way husbands should love their wives as their
own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. For no one ever hated his own flesh, but
                                                  - 10 -
nourishes and cherishes it, just as Christ does the church, because we are members of his body.
“Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall
become one flesh.” This mystery is profound, and I am saying that it refers to Christ and the
church. However, let each one of you love his wife as himself, and let the wife see that she
        respects her husband.

P This is the Word of the Lord.
        C Thanks be to God.

Holy Gospel John 2:1–11

P The Holy Gospel according to St. John, the second chapter.

On the third day there was a wedding at Cana in Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there.
Jesus also was invited to the wedding with his disciples. When the wine ran out, the mother of
Jesus said to him, “They have no wine.” And Jesus said to her, “Woman, what does this have
to do with me? My hour has not yet come.” His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he
        tells you.”
Now there were six stone water jars there for the Jewish rites of purification, each holding
twenty or thirty gallons. Jesus said to the servants, “Fill the jars with water.” And they filled
                                                 - 11 -
them up to the brim. And he said to them, “Now draw some out and take it to the master of the
feast.” So they took it. When the master of the feast tasted the water now become wine, and did
not know where it came from (though the servants who had drawn the water knew), the master
of the feast called the bridegroom and said to him, “Everyone serves the good wine first, and
when people have drunk freely, then the poor wine. But you have kept the good wine until
now.” This, the first of his signs, Jesus did at Cana in Galilee, and manifested his glory. And
      his disciples believed in him.

P This is the Gospel of the Lord.

Nicene Creed

C I believe in one God,
              the Father Almighty,
              maker of heaven and earth
and of all things visible and invisible.

And in one Lord Jesus Christ,
             the only-begotten Son of God,
begotten of His Father before all worlds,
God of God, Light of Light,
             very God of very God,
             begotten, not made,
being of one substance with the Father,
             by whom all things were made;
who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven
and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary
             and was made man;
and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate.
             He suffered and was buried.
And the third day He rose again according to the Scriptures
                and ascended into heaven
and sits at the right hand of the Father.
And He will come again with glory to judge both the living and the dead,
whose kingdom will have no end.

And I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the Lord and giver of life,
who proceeds from the Father and the Son,
                                               - 12 -
who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified,
                    who spoke by the prophets.
And I believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church,
I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins,
and I look for the resurrection of the dead
and the life T of the world to come. Amen.

Proper Preface

P It is truly meet, right, and salutary that we should at all times and in all places give thanks
to You, holy Lord, almighty Father, everlasting God, through Jesus Christ, our Lord; for

have manifested the fullness of Your glory. Therefore with angels and archangels and with
all the company of heaven we laud and magnify Your glorious name, evermore praising

We offer both the individual and common cup. If you desire the individual cup, please
take one from the Elder. The Pastor will then distribute the common cup. The
communicants are asked to hold their cups until the Pastor says, "Take and drink," and
during this time the common cup will be distributed.

Distribution Hymn: Here, O My Lord, I See Thee Face to Face LSB 631

       5    Mine is the sin, but Thine the righteousness;
              Mine is the guilt, but Thine the cleansing blood;
Here is my robe, my refuge, and my peace:
Thy blood, Thy righteousness, O Lord my God. (continues on following page)

                                                - 19 -
6      Too soon we rise; the vessels disappear;
               The feast, though not the love, is past and gone;
             The bread and wine remove, but Thou art here;
Nearer than ever; still my shield and sun.

7 Feast after feast thus comes and passes by,
Yet, passing, points to that glad feast above,
Giving sweet foretaste of the festal joy,
The Lamb’s great marriage feast of bliss and love.

Post-Communion Collect

      P Let us pray.
O God the Father, the fountain and source of all goodness, who in loving-kindness sent
Your only-begotten Son into the flesh, we thank You that for His sake You have given us
pardon and peace in this Sacrament, and we ask You not to forsake Your children but
always to rule our hearts and minds by Your Holy Spirit that we may be enabled constantly
to serve You; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You
and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

MASK POLICY UPDATE The Board of Elders is continuing to monitor COVID's effects in our
community. The Board discussed the continued rapid developments during our meeting and decided
that masks will be required during services and church activities at this present time. We will regularly
monitor the situation, communicate with the congregation, and move to return to optional masking as
conditions improve. Again, we ask that you please remain home and seek testing if you feel sick or
develop a fever, cough, or shortness of breath. Please contact an Elder if you have any questions.

VOTER'S MEETING The next Voter's Meeting will be Sunday, January 30th after worship.

ALTAR GUILD is looking for YOU! The altar is the center of the Christian Church. Around it the
people of God gather. Altar Guild is quiet service with both men and women encouraged to sign up
on the sheet in the Sacristy. A hearty 'thank you' to those who have served in the past and will again
join this service to the Church. Please contact Angie Proud or Deaconess Eileen Esget
(deaconess@glclr.org) for more information.

FOOD PANTRY DONATIONS NEEDED Many people have relied on the Church’s generosity to
help put food on their tables. We currently need to replenish the following types of canned food
items: Beanie Weenies, Vienna Sausages, canned chicken breast and canned ravioli. Any help is
appreciated. Please leave your contributions in the breezeway between Parker Hall and we will make
sure to stock the shelves.

2022 OFFERING ENVELOPES Beginning in February 2022, we will be using offering envelopes
from a new vendor. Envelope packets will be mailed to your home every two months beginning in
mid-January. Each packet will contain envelopes for each worship service as well as several blank
envelopes which may be used for special designated gifts. There will no longer be separate envelopes
for Missions, Building or Scholarship Funds. Special gifts may be designated by a note included in
the envelope or by using the extra envelopes in the packets.
These changes are being made to reduce the cost of purchasing and distributing offering envelopes.
Another option to reduce our cost is to opt out of envelope mailings if they are no longer necessary. If
you are giving electronically or possibly receiving multiple sets of envelopes when only one set is
needed you may wish to opt out of envelope mailings, please contact Monica in the church office at
(501) 663-3631 or by email at monica@glclr.org. For those of you who give electronically, if you
have requested that envelopes not be mailed to you, you will only receive the first mailing.
Plain envelopes will be provided at the doors to the sanctuary and in the pews to use for your offerings
until the new envelopes are available. If your offering is in cash and you wish to receive tax credit for
your offering, please place your name inside or on the envelope.
