If the Church Were Perfect, Nobody Among Us Could Belong Jesus tells us another parable which caught his audience by surprise. He criticized the Pharisee and praised the publican, he did the totally unexpected. The lesson is clear that we must not look down on others. Years before the Second Vatican Council, the Church is called the “Perfect Society”, however the post-Vatican images of the Church emerged about the Church as the “People of God” in which the universal call to holiness is extended to all whether sinners or saints. The Pharisee in Us— It is strange how easily we believe that we compare favourably with others and surpass them in goodness. The word ‘Pharisee’ means “separated”. The parable says the Pharisee stood by himself. He did not see himself as part of sinful humankind. This made him superior to other people and sit in judgment. Yet, while we point one finger at others, three fingers are pointing at ourselves. Every morning when we wake up, we know we can be a saint or a sinner. We can be grasping or crooked by turning every opportunity to our personal benefit instead of caring for the weaker ones. The Humility of the Publican - The publican admits his dishonesty and sinfulness. He totally depends on God’s mercy and grace. He does not feel superior to his neighbour and he turns to God his saviour. The publican goes home believing in God’s goodness, the Pharisee returns home believing in himself. God has no problem with the repentant sinner. God cannot do anything for the Pharisee who does not seek help. There is more of the Pharisee in us than we care to admit. We easily believe that somebody does not deserve our understanding. We refuse to forgive somebody because we claim we do not err. We are rash in judging and condemning others and our solution is always the best. We compare ourselves with others who are worse and justify the evil we do. We easily forget we fail as Christians. The Pharisee was the better man, but the worse attitude. Some complain about the Church or the parish priest. Like any human institution the Church has her defects. If the Church were perfect, nobody among us could belong. It is not because we can raise valid accusations against Church leaders or members that we are good. It is easy to compare ourselves to others and declare ourselves the winner. (SOURCE OF REFLECTION: FROM SPRING TO LIFE, by Fr. Paul Foulon C.IC.M.) Visiting Rome? Stay at Domus Australia.
