But, O Lord, other pastures seem greener. The waters aren’t always still. Our souls still thirst. He leads me in right paths for his name’s sake. O Lord, we long to be led by you, though we may complain along the path. Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I fear no evil; for you are with me; your rod and your staff — they comfort me. And yet, O God, we do sometimes fear. May we feel your presence, your comfort and your forgiveness anew. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. O God, sometimes we refuse to sit down at your table. Forgive us and help us to see your overflowing mercy. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord my whole life long. ANTHEM My Shepherd Is Lord Harrison Oxley (1933-2009) Chancel Choir My Shepherd is Lord, I have all I need, giving me rest in green and pleasant fields, reviving my soul by finding fresh water, guiding my ways with a shepherd’s care. Though I should walk in death’s dark valley, I will fear no evil with you by my side, your shepherd’s staff to comfort me. You spread your table in sight of my foes, anoint my head, my cup runs over; you tend me with love always loyal. I dwell with the Lord as long as I live. OLD TESTAMENT READING: Exodus 17:1-7 Large Print Pew Bible, page 79 Pew Bible, page 64 The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. SERMON: “Life is a Highway” Rev. Taylor Barner R ES P ONDING TO T HE W O RD Our response to ANTHEM hearing God’s Psalm One Hundred Robert Roth (b. 1928) Word includes Chancel Choir singing and saying what we believe. O be joyful in the Lord, all ye lands: serve the Lord with gladness, and come before his presence with a song. Be ye sure that the Lord he is God; it is he that hath made us, and not we ourselves; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture. O go your way into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise; be thankful unto him and speak good of his Name. For the Lord is gracious, his mercy is everlasting; and his truth endureth from generation to generation. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. *AFFIRMATION OF FAITH - from A Brief Statement of Faith Offering plates are We trust in God, located in the whom Jesus called Abba, Father. narthex. But we rebel against God; we hide from our Creator. Ignoring God's commandments,
we violate the image of God in others and ourselves, accept lies as truth, exploit neighbor and nature, and threaten death to the planet entrusted to our care. We deserve God's condemnation. Yet God acts with justice and mercy to redeem creation. In everlasting love, the God of Abraham and Sarah chose a covenant people to bless all families of the earth. Hearing their cry, God delivered the children of Israel from the house of bondage. Loving us still, God makes us heirs with Christ of the covenant. Like a mother who will not forsake her nursing child, like a father who runs to welcome the prodigal home, God is faithful still.
