King’s Light December 2020 Dearly Beloved, Greetings in the name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus the Christ. Here we are at the end of another year. This year has not been easy. It has had many challenges. But with God’s grace we can say we made it thus far. God is good and continues to be good. Our Thanksgiving will not look like it did last year and more than likely, neither will our Christmas. But we will make the best out of the cards we have been dealt. One thing that life circumstances have allowed us to be is creative. This year has allowed me to experience some firsts. I experienced drive-by baby showers and drive-by birthday parties for the first time. This is the first time that I experienced ZOOM worship. These are some of the many things that I have experienced for the very first time. Overall, I have enjoyed these first experiences. I am amazed and proud at the adjustments that we have made as Christians and as a church family. We made it! Hallelujah we made it! We are now entering December, with the grace of God. I like many of you, look forward to what the next year of 2021 will bring. In the meantime, do no harm, keep doing good, and stay in love with God (John Wesley, 3 Simple Rules) May each of you have safe and blessed Christmas. I look forward to hearing about your first experiences throughout this Advent and Christmas season. May God richly bless you and your family. Pastor Judy

Our Men’s Group collected over $2,000 in gift cards and donations, plus food items towards Thanksgiving and Christmas meals. The gifts will be redistributed to several families in need of a little help during the upcoming holiday season. Thank you to those of you who chose to sponsor a Home of Hope Outreach student for a year’s worth of schooling for $100 per year. These sponsorships are truly a gift to kids who otherwise would be educationally deprived. Thank you for letting your heart reach into your wallet for a child in Nyadire, Zimbabwe. A “Thank You, First Bethel” from Phil Himmler Dear FB Family of mine, You know that Nyadire, Zimbabwe is deeply imbedded in my heart. Years ago, I composed a song called LET’S NOT WAIT ‘TIL CHRISTMAS TO HAVE CHRISTMAS DAY with these lyrics “…the moment we share God’s love, that’s when Christmas starts!” You, my friends, started Christmas in September by donating $$ to our TNC Hunger Appeal. We, TNC (The Nyadire Connection) and I were hoping to raise $45,000 to feed 407 families for six months. THANKS TO YOUR GENEROSITY, FIRST BETHEL, TNC raised a total of $55,000! CHRISTMAS began in September and has been ongoing in Nyadire, Zimbabwe because you chose to do something good with what you have. “If you can’t feed a hundred people, then feed just one” Mother Theresa Thank you, Thank you, TATENDA!

December 18 “The Chilbury Ladies’ Choir” by Jennifer Ryan “The Chilbury Ladies' Choir unfolds the struggles, affairs, deceptions, and triumphs of a village choir during World War II. As England becomes enmeshed in the early days of World War II and the men are away fighting, the women of Chilbury village forge an uncommon bond. They defy the Vicar's stuffy edict to close the choir and instead "carry on singing," resurrecting themselves as the Chilbury Ladies' Choir. We come to know the home-front struggles of five unforgettable choir members: a timid widow devastated when her only son goes to fight; the older daughter of a local scion drawn to a mysterious artist; her younger sister pining over an impossible crush; a Jewish refugee from Czechoslovakia hiding a family secret; and a conniving midwife plotting to outrun her seedy past. An enchanting ensemble story that shuttles from village intrigue to romance to the heartbreaking matters of life and death, Jennifer Ryan's debut novel thrillingly illuminates the true strength of the women on the home front in a village of indomitable spirit.” Amazon January 15 “In That Time” by Michael O’Donnell “In That Time tells the story of the American experience in Vietnam through the life of Michael O'Donnell, a bright young musician and poet who served as a soldier and helicopter pilot. O'Donnell wrote with great sensitivity and poetic force, and his best-known poem is among the most beloved of the war. In 1970, during an attempt to rescue fellow soldiers stranded under heavy fire, O'Donnell's helicopter was shot down in the jungles of Cambodia. He remained missing in action for almost three decades. Although he never fired a shot in Vietnam, O'Donnell served in one of the most dangerous roles of the war, all the while using poetry to express his inner feelings and to reflect on the tragedy that was unfolding around him. O'Donnell's life is both a powerful, personal story and a compelling, universal one about how America lost its way in the 1960s, but also how hope can flower in the margins of even the darkest chapters of the American story.” Amazon

Belated Birthday Wishes to Barb White! If we miss your birthday it is probably because we don’t have your complete birthdate recorded in the computer. That can happen even if you’ve been at First Bethel a long time. Contact Patty in the office to update your information. Birthdays are listed by month but not date because of security concerns. Call the office if you want the date of someone’s birthday to send wishes. Communion elements will be consecrated and available on the first Sunday of each month in the sanctuary during the 9AM onsite worship service.
