Now Jesus sat opposite the treasury and saw how the people put money into the treasury. - Mark 12:41 How would you feel if your pastor followed the ushers down the aisle one Sunday, inspecting what you put into the offering plate? In a sense, that’s exactly what Jesus did in Mark 12. He watched carefully as the people brought their money to the temple and offered it to the Lord. After all, it was His Father’s house, and He had good reason to inspect what was taking place. We think that what we do with our money is our business; but it’s God’s business, and He doesn’t apologize for watching with intense interest to see what we do with our income. Notice, however, that Jesus wasn’t impressed with the amounts given that day, but with the heart attitude of the giver. The least giver of all, the widow who had only two mites, was the largest giver in His book, “for they all put in out of their abundance, but she out of her poverty.” Remember—Jesus is watching, and the Lord is interested in how we manage our money. After all, we’re simply His stewards. The most obvious lesson in Christ’s teaching is that there is no happiness in having or getting anything, but only in giving. ~ Henry Drummond

SEPTEMBER 2018 A Moment in ARETHA FRANKLIN Queen of Soul/Social Justice Activist Aretha Louise Franklin was an American singer, songwriter, and pianist. She was born on March 25, 1942 in Memphis, Tennessee to Baptist preacher Reverend C.L. Franklin, a national renown preacher with the “Million-Dollar Voice” and Barbara Siggers Franklin. Aretha began her career as a child singing gospel at New Bethel Baptist Church in Detroit, Michigan where her father was minister. Largely self-taught, she was regarded as a child prodigy, a gifted pianist with a powerful voice. By the age of 14, she had recorded some of her earliest tracks at her father’s church, which were released by a small label as the album Songs of Faith in 1956. She also performed pwith C.L.’s traveling revival show and, while on tour, befriended gospel greats such as Mahalia Jackson, Sam Cooke and Clara Ward. She embarked on a secular career in 1960 at age 18, recording for Columbia Records but achieved only modest success. She achieved commercial success and acclaim after signing to Atlantic Records in 1966 with songs such as “Respect”, “Chain of Fools”, “Think”, “A Natural Woman”, “I Never Loved a Man”, and “I Say a Little Prayer”. In 1968 Aretha was enlisted to perform at the funeral of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. during which she paid tribute to her father’s fallen friend with a heartfelt rendition of “Precious Lord.” Later that year, she was also selected to sing the national anthem to begin the Democratic National Convention in Chicago. Spurred by Mahalia Jackson’s passing and a subsequent resurgence of interest in gospel music, Aretha returned to her musical origins for the 1972 album, Amazing Grace, which sold more than 2 million copies and went on to become the best-selling gospel album at the time. Aretha’s success continued throughout the 1970’s as she branched out to work with producers such as Curtis Mayfield and Quincy Jones and expanded her repertoire to include rock and pop covers. Along the way, she took home eight consecutive Grammy Awards for Best R&B Female Vocal Performance, the last coming for her 1974 single, “Ain’t Nothing Like the Real Thing.” In 1976 the soundtrack to the Warner Brothers’ film, Sparkle, topped the R&B charts and made the Top 20 in pop. In 1977, she received an invitation to perform at the presidential inauguration of Jimmy Carter. 1986's Aretha, also charted well and eventually went gold, and her duet with British singer George Michael, "I Knew You Were Waiting (For Me),'' hit No. 1 on the pop charts. In 1987 Aretha became the first female artist to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and was also awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Detroit. That same year, she released the album One Lord, One Faith, One Baptism, which won the Grammy for Best Soul Gospel Performance. Aretha's chart dominance soon earned her the title Queen of Soul, while at the same time she also became a symbol of black empowerment during the Civil Rights Movement.
ARETHA FRANKLIN: Queen of Soul/Social Justice Activist In 1993, Aretha was invited to sing at the inauguration of Bill Clinton, and the following year she received both a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award and Kennedy Center Honors. She would also be the focus of multiple documentaries and tributes as the decade progressed. Nearing its conclusion, Aretha reprised her former role in Blues Brothers 2000, released the gold-selling “A Rose is Still a Rose” and stood in for Luciano Pavarotti, who was too ill to accept his Lifetime Achievement Award, with her rendition of “Nessun Dorma” commanding stellar reviews. In 2003 Aretha released her final studio album on Arista and left the label to found Aretha Records. Two years later, she was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom and became the second woman ever to be inducted into the UK Music Hall of Fame. In 2008 she received her 18th Grammy Award for “Never Gonna Break My Faith”, a collaboration with Mary J. Blige, and was tapped to sing at the 2009 presidential inauguration of Barack Obama. In 2011 Franklin released her first album on her own label, A Woman Falling Out of Love. To support the project, she performed several concerts, including a two-night stint at the famed Radio City Music Hall in New York. With fans and critics alike impressed with her performances, she successfully proved that the Queen of Soul still reigned supreme. With 18 Grammys under her belt, Aretha is one of the most honored artists in Grammy history. Aretha Franklin’s powerful, distinctive gospel-honed vocal style has influenced countless singers across multi-generations, justifiably earning her Rolling Stone Magazine’s No. 1 placing on the list of “The Greatest Singers of All Time.” Quoting Rev. Al Sharpton, “When most people hear the name Aretha Franklin, they automatically think of her remarkable career in music and entertainment. But what most do not realize is that the Queen of Soul dedicated much of her time, money and efforts toward advancing civil rights and human rights. There are superstars, and then there are humanitarians. Aretha somehow encapsulated both.” “She was one of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s favorites. Whenever Dr. King called for her, she showed up. She was always performing at events to raise money for the movement. In the 1960s, when he was facing significant hurdles and some financial challenges, Aretha teamed up with another musical and philanthropic icon, Harry Belafonte, and toured cities doing fundraising concerts for Dr. King. Such selfless actions wouldn't appear unusual if you knew that her father, the Rev. C.L. Franklin, was the most prolific black minister of a generation, a close friend and co-activist with Dr. King, and spearheaded the massive Detroit March for Justice, which led to the historic March on Washington in August of 1963. Aretha Franklin remained authentically a church person, a person committed to social justice and civil rights.”
