Sunday, October 31—Feast of Christ the King (1962 Missal) Already in the early days of the twentieth century, there had been a rise in secularism, which influenced many people to increasingly live their lives as if God did not exist. Dictatorships flourished and many Christians, including some Catholics, began to doubt not only the authority but also the existence of Christ. Consequently this led many to question the power of the Church to continue Christ’s authority. Therefore, in this social and cultural climate Pope Pius XI felt a need for a feast celebrating the kingship of Christ over all humanity at that time when respect for Christ and for the Church was rapidly declining. Thus, in 1925, Pope Pius XI issued the encyclical Quae primas establishing the Feast of Christ the King, which was to be observed on the last Sunday of October, just before the Feast of All Saints. Establishing it as a vehicle for spiritual teaching against the increasing atheism and secularization of the age, he wanted to assert Christ’s supreme authority over men and their institutions because he saw acknowledgement of Christ as King as the most effective weapon against the destructive forces of our ages In order to emphasize Christ the King triumphant over all His saints Pope Pius XI consciously placed this new feast on the last Sunday of October, in close proximity to the Feast of All Souls and the Commemoration of All Souls. In so doing he emphasized the entire Communion of Saints over whom Christ has sovereign kingship: the saints in heaven (commemorated in All Saints Day), the souls awaiting sainthood in Purgatory (commemorated on All Souls Day), and those souls yet struggling to achieve sainthood on earth. After the Second Vatican Council, the Feast of Christ the King was moved to the last Sunday in the liturgical year, just before the beginning of Advent, changing the name to “The Feast of Christ, King of the Universe.” In this manner, the Church sought to put it in more of an eschatological context by emphasizing Christ’s cosmic eschatological kingship of all the universe.
