Merry Christmas To All December 2018 Issue No 382 Official Newsletter of the Pirie & Districts Automotive Restorer’s Club Inc. November 2018 Crank Talk 1
Patrons Christmas Message This festive season magazine depicts the real meaning of Christmas & I have borrowed again the picture from a greetings card. Last year I was proud to show our family members who were involved in the Christmas theme at the enactments at Lobethal’s Nativity Christmas plays & carols. Our grandson Bradley Chappell as Joseph, his wife Jessica as Mary & our great granddaughter Maddison deputising as the infant Jesus, but twelve months down the track & Maddison is no longer a baby but a real little girl. PADARC has enjoyed another prosperous & rewarding year, some interesting outings, a successful rally & plans are in place for a Stationary engine & auto day in the new year. Volunteers for some tasks around the club are at a premium & we must not just think Somebody will do it, because if Everybody thinks along that vein then Nobody becomes ob- vious. The coming year will again bring changes to our club, with our constitution & Bi-Laws being revised. This will increase the workload on some of our executive committee, please remember you only get out what you put in, so don't be relucent to offer assistance when it is required. Personally I was hoping that this year we would hold our Christmas Party in our clubroom again. We have 32 junior members, perhaps their parents would have attended with their family & a visit from Santa Claus possibly appreciated. To members attending our Christmas Lunch & drive I hope & trust it meets all expectations. Thank you to the members who have provided magazine stories, photos, jokes & snippets to our magazine committee, your input is greatly appreciated. Should you be travelling over the festive please season drive safely. On behalf of Norma & Myself I conclude by wishing all our members & their families a Happy, Holy Christmas, & a Bright, Prosper- ous Happy New Year . Pat Greenfield. Hello Members, As I am busy Reaping I have dictated this report to our Editor. We have had a busy month with many successful runs, the first was to Merv Robinson’s Sheds in Jamestown. After a lovely morning tea we had a look through his shed at his home. After lunch we then drove onto his farm and to have a look through his other 2 sheds. We had a large turn out and everyone had a great day. We had a nice turnout for the Repco Show and Shine with 2of our members taking out the awards on the day. We also had a great turn out for the Christmas Pageant and a great number of members, approx. 46 joined in our Christmas Lunch in Booleroo Centre, even Santa made an appearance. A great day was had by all. I would like t wish all our members and their families a Merry Christmas and a Safe and Happy New Year. Until Next year Paul November 2018 Crank Talk 4

Trip to Merv Robinsons, Jamestown - 10th November The trip to Merv Robinson's place can only be defined as a great success, with a full complement of members and guests attending. Everything went well from the start. We had arranged for the slower vehicles to get away earlier from the PADARC clubrooms and then the main bunch followed at 9.30 am. The plan was for all to meet up at the Belalie Creek where Clive Palmer met us and led us to Merv's house in Jamestown, which had a large parking area at the rear. Merv greeted us and we were invited inside for morning tea. Then it was off to his shed to inspect a collection of cars, some with names we had never heard of before. Merv was able to give us a full rundown on all these vehicles. Most inter- esting for me were the Auburns and Flint cars. We may think we have some good cars today but really some of these vintage cars were so advanced for their time. When we were looking at one of the Au- burns one of our ladies commented on how romantic the inside of the car looked with its etched win- dow glass and pretty cut glass flower holders and plush seating. It had real style. Merv said, "Yes, you are half right. Also, this was one of the first cars to have reclining seats." That car was truly a luxury sa- loon. With so much to see and so many questions to ask, we decided to have our picnic lunch there, with some of us sitting under the trees in the beautiful garden (which Merv said was all done by his wife) and others sitting in the shed near the wonderful cars. For the main event we were to follow Merv out to the farm, where he asked us to line up for some offi- cial photos. After all, we had a professional photographer with us. With Merv's grandson operating some of the farm equipment, Clive was raised up about 30 feet in the air so he could get everyone in the photos. He asked us to take off our hats so he could see our smiling faces, and then complained that the sun was reflecting off my bald head! Now, there are no words for what we saw next. It is one of the most mind-blowing collections of just about everything that I've ever seen. We were invited up to this big shed and inside was wall-to-wall tractors, cars, and trucks. Amazing doesn't seem enough to de- scribe the contents. It is one of those things that you have to see to appreciate and is the reason why I didn't want any of our members to miss out. Then, to top it all, there was a new shed, which was even bigger and just been built, behind the first shed and this was full of not only tractors but steam engines, stationary engines, aircraft engines, and even an army tank which was fully operational. Just to look in- side and imagine the men in that machine operating it is awesome. I was told there was a crew of six, and how they ever all got in there I'll never know. Merv's son started up the engine from a Sherman tank, which was sitting on the floor of the shed, and the noise almost blew the roof off. The sound was deafening. This engine was like nothing I'd ever seen before - four engines all joined together on the flat, making sixteen cylinders, and the crew members would have been sitting on top of that. Behind that shed is an open paddock full of scrap cars, engines and tractors, a scrap merchant's para- dise. There was just so much to see. Thank you most sincerely, Merv, from all at PADARC for a wonderful day. Regards, Dave Willsher November 2018 Crank Talk 6
Report for Gladstone Country Fair Trip - 20th October This was the best country fair I've ever been to. Everything about it was well organised and well thought out. The new people who had taken on the task were very professional, even sending out a site plan beforehand. The stalls were laid out in an avenue facing each other like a shopping mall. The food stalls were in a separate area with plenty of seating and all the kids entertainment was grouped together in one area. There was fun stuff like a petting zoo, jumping castle, bungy run, dunking pool and face painting, etc. The items on the entertainment program were announced individually. You should have seen some of the blokes rushing to see the belly dancers. We had a really impressive display of stationary engines from Barney, Allen and Andrew, with Amanda doing all the hard work. Several people commented on the display, and one comment was that they were a lot quieter and even the officials were impressed. We set up our cars along the main street, after moving a few parked cars out of the way. The varie- ty of our club cars ranged from Neil's 1926 Humber Tourer to Terry's flash Chrysler New Yorker, but the one that stood out for me was Mark Sargent's purple Ford GTO. One local said it was one of the best displays we have ever had at Gladstone. I would have to agree. There were some twenty Padarc cars and, to top it all, a contingent from the Port Augusta car club came down with another eight vehicles. A very successful day with even the weather on our side - couldn't have been better. Many thanks to all club members who participated and helped make it a very pleasant club trip. Report from Bay to Birdwood by Leon Darley As usual I attended the Bay to Birdwood run again. As I do every 2 years. I left home at 9 am on the Saturday morning and stayed at my daughter’s place at Munno Para. I watched the AFL grand final on Saturday and West Coast Eagles defeated Collingwood by 5points. I left my daughter’s place at 8.30 am on the Sunday morning and went to Birdwood. I went via Gawler and Wil- liamstown to avoid the traffic. I arrived at Birdwood at about 9.30 am and parked my car in a car park. I had a look in an antique shop until the museum opened at 10 am when I went in. There were a few cars already there so I got my camera out and started taking pictures. The list is too numerous but there were some race cars there including a 1928 Lezeber, a 1925 Buggatti, a 1939 Oldsmobile convertible, a 1928 Graham Paige Roadster, a 1924 Dort and the usual number of Buicks, Chevs, Fords, Morrises, Rolls Royces and Whippets. As well as many other makes of cars. There was a national Ford A Rally on and there was about 56 A Model Fords from all over Australia and maybe one even from New Zealand. There was a very rough 1935 Plymouth that got an award it was owned by a lady and it had been in a shed for 40 years. They got it started, put petrol in it , pumped up the tires, put oil in the engine, tuned it up and drove it to Birdwood from Naracoorte in the South East the day before and that is the first time it had been on the road in 40 years. The winner of the Concourse D’Elegance was a Lasa Chrysler 2 door sedan. I went into the museum and had a look at the cars in there and took some photos of cars 3 Zetas, 2 Rolls Royces, a Bentley, a Hornet, An Erskine, a Pierce Arrow a Straker Squire and A Very rare racing car, a Chamberlain 8 of the 1930s only 1 other one exists. I left Birdwood about 3.30pm and went back to my daughter’s place and came home the next day. This year there was only about just over 800 cars the lowest number since 2982 and being a long week- end my have kept some people away but I will be there again hopefully in 2 years time. We are getting older and slower now and the cars are in the sheds. Leon Darley A 1922 Studebaker A 1924 Rugby November 2018 Crank Talk 8

Oil Can Harry A young boy had lost his eye in an accident on the family farm & as his family were short of money they could only replace his eye with a prosthetic wooden one. He was extreme- ly self conscious of his unfortunate situation & he was sure he would never find love. One evening his mother convinced him to attend a local dance to mingle with his peers. Nervously he went along & sat in the corner. After looking around the hall he saw a girl with a very large nose also sitting alone. He decided he would approach & ask her to dance. He walked over & nervously asked “Excuse me, would you like to dance” The girl immediately perked up & leaped to her feet” Would I, Would I ! The boy screwed up his face & shouted back at her, “Big Nose, Big Nose” A little girl went to her Dad who was working in the yard. She asked him “Daddy, what is sex” Her father was surprised that she would ask such a question, but decided that if she was old enough to ask the question she was old enough to get a straight answer. So he proceeded to tell her about the birds & bees. When he had finished, the little girl was looking at him with mouth wide open. The father noticing his little daughters distress asked, "Why did you ask me”? The little girl replied” Mummy told me to tell you dinner will be ready in a couple of secs” Smiling with Christine Baker, thanks Chris. OCH November 2018 Crank Talk 17
