Cmdr. Jim Suber, AP COMMANDER CDR JON M. VANATTA, AP HAPPY 2021! Somehow we made it through the craziness of 2020! A wise man once said, “When everything that is planned gets upended, there is nothing to do, but do our best!” And, we did! When we planned something and things didn’t go as planned, we didn’t fight it, we just went with the flow. In every situation, we stayed optimistic and accepted that we can never control everything. No situation is ever permanent. We learn to adapt. That’s how life is---unpredictable. I commend all of you for making the best of 2020. What we were able do in 2020, was because of YOU. YOU made it happen. When we were able to see one another, I hope the gatherings were fun and the fellowship was terrific. I want to thank the JSPS Bridge for their unwavering support. The Jacksonville Annual Planning Meeting is tentatively scheduled at my residence on Saturday, January 16, from 1-4 pm. Afterwards, those who would like to join us, please come to Whitey’s Fish Camp for dinner and a beer! For now, the City of Jacksonville Annual Boat Show is scheduled for January 29-31, Cal Ray will be circulating a sign-up roster to assist with the USPS booth. Please support this effort to help get our name out there, as well as educating the boating community. In 2020, we lost a dear friend and member, Dianne Adams. We will all remember her kindness and delightful presence. Dianne was lighthearted and fun to be around. She will be missed. We have so many wonderful memories of Dianne and we will always think of her with a smile. Jon Vanatta, Commander Email: vanatta1881@comcast.net To: Jacksonville Sail & Power Squadron The family of Dianne Adams appreciates the Squadron honoring her with a $200 contribution to the United States Power Squadron Education Fund in her name. Dianne had many friends in the Squadron and together we had many good times attending club events. I look forward to seeing all of you soon. Thank you. Mark Adams 3
EXECUTIVE OFFICER REPORT LT/C GARY CALLAHAN, JN 2021 is only a few weeks away and I believe all of us are anxious to start over with a new year. Before looking ahead and planning for a new year, a look back saw a good year, even with limited activities. The CV-19 hit the nation and what was expected to be short term restrictions became a yearlong hibernation. The virus was especially dangerous for people in our median age group. We continually made many revisions to our calendar while following safety guidelines. General Membership meetings were cancelled and the Bridge got by with online conferences. Through this, we were still able to hold several boating activities and events outdoors at Metro Park. Washing and sterilizing the pavilion seemed to keep everyone safe. Our community Vessel Safety Checks were comparable to prior years. Very pleased that Merit Marks were earned by 43 members, a good number in any year. We had also another very strong show of support for the Greater Jacksonville Kingfish Tournament. We were able to hold our Christmas Party last week at Mavi’s on the water at Beach Marina—a good time for all. They were great working with us providing flexible seating that could be grouped and spaced as needed, a good location with sliding doors to the dock and excellent food. I see us using their facility more often this next year. We were fortunate throughout the year that we only had a few who contracted the virus and that none were hospitalized. Looking ahead, I see a growing squadron, with more activities and training classes. Even with all of the challenges we had a large group of new members join us. Most were new boat owners or stepping up to different types or size. Tom Anderson was the driving force behind this growth, by finding ways to conduct the ABC boat safety classes. This coming year should have many of us expanding our skills and knowledge through more advanced classes. The precautions that we learned this year will help us plan a full and safe list of activities. Our first planning session will be mid-January. Keep a lookout for a notice and we welcome all ideas. The first boat show of the year scheduled for January has been postponed for a few months and may be combined with the on- water show. The New Year tradition of Fireworks watching from Metro Docks and a New Year breakfast on the dock is still scheduled. {Continued on next page} 4
Our New Year will officially start on February 20th at Club Continental with the swearing in of new officers. This is a beautiful riverfront location and good food. Details coming soon. EDUCATION LT/C TOM ANDERSON, SN-CN Greetings from the Educational Department! Hope everyone is doing well. It has been an honor serving as your Education Officer in 2020. This has been a very trying time for educational classes. We did manage to present eight ABC3 Safe Boating Classes this year with 50 students passing the course. I would like to thank our ABC3 Staff, P/D/C Dick Leatherman, SN, P/C Peter Foster, SN and P/St/C Ken Scherz---“Job Well Done”. I have to thank Ken Scherz again this year for a wonderful job as Assistant Squadron Educational Officer. We are very lucky to have Ken in our Educational Department. He is the “Best of the Best---Thanks Ken”. Hopefully 2021 will be back to somewhat normal or whatever our new normal will be. We are planning on a Boat Handling Class the first quarter of the year. We have had a few boaters taking advantage of the Jump Start Program. If you know of any new boaters feel free to give them my contact information. I would like to give a special thank you to Lambs Yacht Center, Peggy Sue Lamb Williams, Johnny Williams and Nadia Williams, for allowing us to use their Training Room. They allow us to hold classes and also store all our material in the room. This is a huge asset to our Education Department. Please let me know of any classes you are interested in starting 2021 Educational Year. Join in on a class, we will it make FUN!!!! THE BOATER'S GUIDE TO WINTERIZING From Boat US Marine Insurance Program “It’s that time of year again. The leaves have started to change color, and the nights are getting longer and cooler. Before the mercury dips below freezing, you need to prepare your boat for the coming winter. At its most basic, winterizing means draining any water aboard or replacing it with enough of the right kind of antifreeze to protect against the lowest temperatures your boat might experience. Fresh water expands in volume by about nine percent when it freezes and can push outwards with a force of tens of thousands of pounds per square inch. That expansion can crack an engine block, damage fiberglass, split hoses, or destroy a refrigeration system overnight. An analysis of ten years of freeze claims from the BoatU.S. Marine Insurance claim files found that more than three-quarters involved cracks in the engine block or the exhaust manifolds that occurred because water remained in the engine or cooling system during a hard freeze. Those claims come from all over the country, not just from the states that get snow every year. Boaters in the frozen North know they need to winterize, so their freeze claims almost always involve a problem with how the boat was winterized. In the temperate South, the claim files include many more claims where the boat wasn’t winterized at all, or where the boater was de- pending upon a heater to keep the engine from freezing and the electricity went out. Most of those who don’t winterize, or don’t winterize properly, only find out something is wrong in the spring when brown froth starts spewing through a crack in the side of the engine block or what looks like chocolate milk appears on the dipstick. Repairing freeze damage takes time and all too often involves a complete engine replacement. By the time the boat is in working order, a good part of the boating season will have been lost. Winterizing most boats takes from an hour to a day. Unless you are located in Hawaii or the Florida Keys, we recommend winterizing your engine if you will be laying up the boat for even a few weeks to minimize the chances that a sudden freeze will put it out of commission next season. While winter layup lists can run to several pages and take a month of Sundays to complete, many of those lists include maintenance and cosmetic items that, while nice, don’t make it any more likely your boat will get through the winter unscathed. Even if we have the best of intentions in September when we put together our fall work list for the boat, life tends to get in the way, and all too often we find ourselves rush- ing to the boat the weekend before a hard freeze is forecast. At that point, all we have time for are the es- sentials that will protect our boat from damage. In this brochure, you’ll find the list of items that would have prevented more than 95 percent of the freeze claims handled by the BoatU.S. Marine Insurance Program in the past decade. Of course, every boat is different, and you’ll want to add other items from the owner’s manuals for your boat and the additional equipment it carries. The pullout checklist in the center of this brochure, on pages 8 and 9, can serve as the starting point for creating your own winterizing list that will maximize your boat’s chances of coming through the winter without damage. You can also find the checklist on our website at: BoatUS.com/Seaworthy/checklist-winter. “ To access the checklist go to: www.boatus.com/expert-advice/how-to-diy/winterization 8

VESSEL SAFETY CHECK (VSC) A major component of a fun filled outing is a reliable boat which has all the necessary equipment operating properly. A free vessel safety check (VSC) is an important safe-guard, and our certified examiners will be happy to perform the check for you. There are no consequences if you don't pass. Our goal is simply to help make boating as safe as possible for you, your family and your friends, through education. The United States Power Squadrons and the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary are partners in this valuable program offered to the boating public. All examiners are certified and trained on the latest requirements. The Vessel Safety Check is similar to the review that is performed by the U.S. Coast Guard if you are boarded, except that it is voluntary, and only you receive the results. Our Vessel Safety Examiners will perform a 15 point safety check which includes: Display of Numbers Registration/Documentation Personal Flotation Devices (PFD) Visual Distress Signals (VDS) Fire Extinguishers Ventilation Backfire Flame Control Sound Producing Devices Navigation Lights Pollution Placard MARPOL Track Placard Marine Sanitation Devices Navigation Rules State and/or Local Requirements Overall Vessel Condition To schedule a Vessel Safety Exam, you may contact any of our Jacksonville Squadron examiners: Mark Adams 904-731-4609 Tom Anderson 904-704-2746 Gary Callahan 904-629-8310 Pete Foster 904-797-6707 Ron Poland 904-885-0638 Jim Spencer 904-679-3990 Jim Suber 904-509-0588 Jon Vanatta 904-859-1724 Robert DeComo 317-847-0584 VSC EVENTS: We have completed 182 Vessel Safety Checks for 2020! 10
