News: Last week, Taiwan’s first female President Tsai Ing-wen was re-elected in a landslide victory. Tsai Ing-wen is the
leader of the Democratic Progressive Party and has been president since 2016.

Where is Taiwan? Taiwan is an island in Asia and lies just off the coast of China.

Why has there been so much buzz around this election? Much of it has to do with threats from China. China considers
Taiwan as one of its provinces, while many people in Taiwan see it as an independent nation.

China has been trying to push the idea of ‘one country, two systems (where the Taiwanese would have some say in local
government – the same model as Hong Kong) but most Taiwanese are not buying it.

Over the last few years China has imposed all sorts of economic, trade and tourism restrictions on the island. It has barred
other countries from having diplomatic relations with Taiwan. Only 18 countries recognize it as a self-governing nation. They
have displayed military threats by having military vessels and aircrafts cruise around the vicinity of the island and banned
Chinese tourists from visiting the island.

But the threat of Chinese interference swung the vote is Ms. Ing-wen’s favor. The agitation in Hong Kong has further worried
Taiwanese people. President Tsai promises peaceful ties with China and has promised to protect Taiwanese freedom.

How does this ambiguous legal status affect Taiwan? Taiwan has its own constitution, army, and elected government.
Over the years it has developed in a technology and manufacturing hub and the 19th largest economy in the world. Taiwan

The rise of the Xenobot!

Credit: Medium.com, Caption: computer generated combinations of living, programmable cells

What is a ‘xenobot’? A xenobot is a new hybrid consisting of living cells and computing power. This is a new living
organism that was reported on last week by scientists at the University of Vermont and Tufts University. The name comes
from the African clawed frog (Xenopus laevis) from whom the cells to make this programmable living bot were taken. These
cells are less than a millimetre wide – that’s pretty tiny! It is reported that they can swim and work together in groups. Oh!
And can self-heal, apparently!

First, what are stem cells? Stem cells are very powerful ‘undifferentiated cells’, that exist in embryos. They have the
potential to become any cell in the body.

So really, what are these xenobots? These research groups took stem cells from frogs, let them incubate, then cut the

cells and combined them in different configurations that were suggested by a computer, and not seen in nature. They then
observed what these cells did and how they behaved.

They found that there was a winning combination – skin cells and cardiac cells were cut and combined in such a way that the
skin cells interlocked with each other and also combined with the cardiac cells which are capable of motion. The resulting
combination of skin cells with the ability to form a membrane and cardiac cells with the ability to move is a teeny tiny blob
that moves across a petri dish in a direction! They also fall apart after seven days, so have a finite life.

ce_livingrobots_gif1.mp4
This gif is taken from Wired Magazine, who got it from the University of Vermont. The blue blocks are the skin cells, and the
red and green are the cardiac cells. See how the blob moves across!

Why is this such an important achievement? Researchers have been trying to figure out ways to get medicines into the
body, to collect microplastics from the ocean, clean up nuclear waste, and to do many other tasks that are difficult for
humans to do. Traditional robots that are machines are programmable, but they might not be able to withstand all these
conditions. Programmable living cells might actually be able to do these kinds of things better. They will be able to live in
liquid environments easily, for instance. These ones will be able to even get into tiny blood vessels in the human body! They
might also be safer for humans.

Is this good or bad? This is of course the first step in the creation of cells that are programmable by human intervention,
and it remains to be seen how the research is furthered. Some people are very excited about its potential, and some are
wary, saying that humans shouldn’t be designing such systems that we will have little control over.

Stay tuned to see how this develops!

Quiz Alert: Get With It!
Here’s a quiz to catch you up on what’s going on this week!

Is this bullying? Take our quiz and
see how much you know about
this.
Bullying is something that most people will encounter in some form, at some point in their lives. It’s really common, but that
doesn’t make it OK! In a situation that involves bullying there are usually three roles – the bully, the victim and the
bystander.

It can get very confusing at times to identify what bullying is, as it has so many different forms. There are different types,
physical – hitting, shoving, verbal – using words to attack someone, social – excluding someone, talking behind that
person’s back and cyberbullying – using electronic media forms like whatsapp, text messages, and social media to spread
rumours, send hate messages and so on. Whatever the method, and this point can’t be repeated enough…bullying is not
OK!

It is equally important to be able to identify a situation as bullying, as sometimes there is a fine line and you can’t tell the
difference. For example, if there is teasing without an intention to hurt then you cannot use the word bullying. Unfortunately,
once you use the word, it becomes a sort of a label and then the people involved also get stuck with a label, a “bully” or a
“victim” and both of these come with their own set of challenges.

Bullying is a lot about power, about making the other person feel powerless, and often manifests itself as repeated
behaviour. If a situation doesn’t make you feel good, then it is most likely bullying. Unfortunately, a lot of victims of bullying
end up being made to feel as if it is their fault, which it is not. On the other hand, there is a perception that bullies are often
victims of bullying themselves which may or may not be the case. For all of the above reasons, it’s really important not to
get fixated on labelling and try and see the situation for what it is.

Try taking this quiz to see if you can identify which situations can be identified as bullying:

Lately there are people who are making fun of him,

during the situation, but you can always do so later. Reach out to that person and report the incident to a trusted adult later.
It’s never too late. Remember that your response can make a big difference to the person you are helping, and also impact
how you feel about yourself.

If you are the target, then always remember that it’s not your fault, staying quiet about it may not always help the situation.
You have to try and let the bully know in your own way that you are not OK with it, without being mean or getting into a
fight.

None of this is easy, and some situations are complicated, but just try and keep in mind that if more people choose to be
kind, there will be a lot less of breaking heads over check ins, interventions, suspensions and all sorts of problems.

Famous TV show host Ellen DeGeneres put it beautifully. She said:

“We focus so much on our differences, and that is creating, I think, a lot of chaos and negativity and bullying in the world.
And I think if everybody just focused on what we all have in common – which is – we all want to be happy.”

gives you carbon, let’s make it
into products we can use!
From a dream in the labs of MIT in Boston, to a reality on the streets of India
and soon in galleries around the world, Air-Ink is one very cool invention.

The brainchild of Indian innovator, MIT graduate and founder of Graviky Labs, Anirudh Sharma, Air-Ink is ink (just like a
normal pen) created using air pollution.

WHAT? HOW? On a visit to India from MIT in 2012, Anirudh noticed that the fumes blowing out from a car exhaust pipe had
left a pattern of soot on a white wall. This led him to think about the growing levels of air pollution in India, and also about
pigments and inks.

Black ink like the kind we use in printers or in pens is essentially made from soot and the substance is technically called
‘carbon black’ which is the powder left over when you burn coal or oil. This powder is mixed with other chemical agents to
make it into a smooth ink.

Eureka! Anirudh was inspired to think that if ink can be made using carbon black or soot, there is no reason that it cannot
be made using air pollution. A quote by the 20th century inventor and architect R. Buckminster Fuller saying ‘Pollution is
nothing but resources we’re not harvesting. We allow them to disperse because we’ve been ignorant of their value,’ served
as his motivation.

Air-INK: Air pollution consists of microscopic particles which are composed primarily of carbon, or soot, created by the

incomplete burning of fuel. This is the stuff that is really bad for us to breathe and that causes a lot of health problems.
Graviky Labs has found a way to harvest these particles, treat them and recycle them into a useful material – ink. This ink
can then be used in pens to write with, by artists and in many other ways.

The innovation: Graviky Labs has come up with a mechanism, called KAALInk which is currently awaiting patent (final
recognition by the authorities) that captures the carbon particulates from pollution by being fitted on to the exhaust pipes of
cars, on machinery and even outside, to trap the particles in the atmosphere.

These particles are then put through several processes to refine them and make them safe for use by human beings before
they are converted into Air-Ink.

So far, the team at Graviky Labs has harvested and recycled about 1.6 trillion litres of air pollution to create ink. Bollywood
superstar Shah Rukh Khan has pledged his support to Air-Ink, promising that he will use that for all his brand promotions.

Graviky Labs has also collaborated with artists around the world to create works of art, murals and street art using Air-Ink in
order to build awareness and educate people about the product and its uses.

That’s cool! Are pollutants being used to create other stuff? Another artist also extracted pollutants from water to
create pigments, and a device known as the world’s largest smog vacuum cleaner filtered air pollution from the air in China
and the waste was used to create pieces of jewellery.

There is now a permanent Air-Ink exhibit at the Museum of Writing in London.

Kudos to Anirudh and the entire Graviky Labs team for this genius invention that may just be a potential solution to the air
pollution problem.

A 17 year old intern at NASA just
helped discover a planet a world
orbiting two stars
What did you do to earn some extra credit on your school report card? This guy from Scarsdale in New York
state discovered a planet!

What? Your kidding right?

Wrong! Last summer 17-year-old Wolf Cukier had joined NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Maryland for a summer
internship. He was asked to studying data from NASA’s space telescope TESS and on the third day of the internship,
something caught his eye.

Quick recap, What is TESS?

TESS stands for Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite. It is NASA’s space telescope whose sole mission is to look for
exoplanets i.e. planets outside the Earth’s solar system.

What did he find?

He discovered a planet that’s nearly 7 times as large as Earth and orbits around two stars. Yes, you read that correctly. If we
lived there we would see two suns rising and setting every day, which sounds kind of cool, but also may be a bit confusing.

How did he find this?

Cukier was examining a special type of system found outside the solar system in which two stars circle around each other.
These stars often eclipse or block each other as they go about their orbits when viewed from Earth. These special systems
are called eclipsing binary systems.

While examing the data he saw a signal. At first, he thought the 2 stars were blocking each other, but then noticed
something odd. Wolf observed that the amount of light from the two orbiting stars that was reaching the TESS telescope
seemed to be less than that was usually recorded. That is when he realized that there was something else blocking the light!

Wolf along with a team of scientists worked hard to verify the data, and they eventually confirmed the new planet now called
TOI 1338 b.

This is even more special because this is TESS’s first circumbinary planet, a world orbiting two stars.

Wolf said in an interview that his family hopes that the planet will one day be renamed Wolftopia! Wolf is a Star Wars fan
