In a way, Jesus seems to scold them for their persistence. They are looking for him not because they are seeking spiritual fulfillment but instead because their physical hunger was miracu- lously sated by the loaves and the fish on the mountainside. Jesus instructs them, “Do not work for food that perishes but for the food that endures for eternal life.” In many ways, physical hunger is a metaphor for the spiritual life. We need food in or- der to live, and as Abraham Maslow’s hierarchy of needs points out, nothing else matters if we are un- able to attain the basic necessities of air, water, food, rest, and health. The people who clamor for Jesus’s attention have been initially enthralled by his ability to provide for their physical hunger. Now Jesus asks to seek something else – not the bread and water that will satisfy for a moment but heaven- ly nourishment that alleviates all hunger and thirst. Jesus wants his followers not only to have the basic necessities of survival but to have the “bread of life.”

Over the last few years, our group has accompanied a number of families and individuals from Afghanistan, Guatemala and Mexico. COVID was a challenge as we learned to help our last family who arrived from Guatemala right before shelter-in-place was declared. They are now stably housed, gainfully employed and looking forward to attending classes in person to learn more English. The youngest member of the family showed such promised under the tutelage of our education volunteers and is blossoming now that she is physically in the classroom. It is truly a joy to see such progress and witness their resilience after so much adversi- ty. The ministry is ready to sponsor another family. With the situation in Afghanistan, many individuals helped the United States military as interpreters/translators. These people and their families are now at risk for retaliation by the Taliban with the withdrawal of troops and are eligible for Special Immigrant Vi- sas (SIV). Welcome the Stranger reached out to the International Rescue Committee offering to spon- sor a family who is expected to arrive sometime at the end of July or August. There are numerous ways members of the ministry volunteer directly with the family by meeting the ar- rival at the airport, helping with education, establishing healthcare, learning English, finding employ- ment, or helping with driver education, technology, or transportation. For those whose time is limited or who prefer to help “behind the scenes”, various committees help with aspect like furnishing the transi- tional home, fundraising, identifying opportunities to involve schools and youth in understanding the ref- ugee/immigrant experience and so many other opportunities. If you feel called to be part of this vibrant ministry, would just like to get more information, or would like to make a donation, please reach out to Anna Rossi at amrossi1238@aol.com or at 510-814-1038. And, as always your prayers are most welcome and needed as we continue to do small things with great love. Depending on the state of the pandemic, we hope to have an informational meeting in the near future and welcome your presence and interest.

ST. PHILIP NERI- ST. ALBERT THE GREAT Alameda, CA Page 5 Dear Sisters and Brothers, The diocese lifts the dispensation of not attending the Mass physically from August 15th. The gos‐ pel of the day emphasizes the importance of looking for or going for the food that will last forever. Today’s readings challenge us to be more concerned with spiritual food than with physical food and to get our spiritual food regularly from the word of God and from the Holy Eucharist – the Heavenly Bread — because only God can satisfy the various forms of our spiritual hunger. Jesus through the Gos‐ pel of the day which is the continuation of the last week’s gospel remarks to the people that they failed to see the signs in the multiplication of the bread. Jesus is the true bread that came down from heaven that will satisfy the hunger of the people forever. “Do not look for the food that will perish” Jesus made it clear about the food that will perish and that do not perish. Like the people of Jesus time, we look for those temporary things, that will die more than the eternal things, that will live forever. It is very clear that Jesus was talking about the Eucharist. We receive the spiritual nourishment we need from the word of God and from the Holy Eucharist. We should not take for granted the Divine generosity, that so readily provides these gifts gratuitously, by sharing in the Bread of Life simply as a matter of habit, without repenting of our sins or showing due at‐ tention and proper respect. We need to gain the benefits of our Holy Communion with Jesus. Our reception of Jesus in Holy Communion acts spiritually as Food to nourish the spirit. The action of Jesus on our soul in Holy Com‐ munion may be described, as uniting us most closely to Himself thus gaining all the spiritual benefits : Our Lord says: “He that eats My Flesh and drinks My Blood, abides in Me, and I in him” (Jn 6:57) uniting each of us individually to each individual member of the human race by joining us to Himself, imparting actual graces, including strength, the power to withstand temptation, and the desire to practice virtue, while maintaining, deepening, and increasing Sanctifying Grace in the soul. Fr. Joseph We welcome our new secretary, Lee Romero, as part of our parish staff! Lee has been a member of this parish for many years and volunteers her time with our Youth Confirmation program.
