The Dominican Charism ‒ Study & Sacred Scripture As was mentioned last fall in two different bulletin articles, it was clear that St. Dominic had a beautiful love for the Sacred Scriptures. Having been given a copy of the Gospels and the Letters of St. Paul by St. Paul through a mystical vision and in light of one of St. Dominic’s nine ways of prayer, it is very clear that the Scriptures shaped not only his devotional life but also his intellectual life. This has been handed down through the centuries to the Dominicans as well. In our current Book of Constitutions, we see that “Divine revelation, of which Tradition and Sacred Scripture constitute one sacred deposit, is the material to be meditated and critically examined by the brothers” (LCO, 79). This is not just a simple glossing over the passages of the Bible or doing a “Bible in a Year” program. As helpful as those things can be for our spiritual life, the Dominican way of studying the Sacred Scriptures goes much deeper. In his Commentary on Isaiah, St. Jerome boldly states, “For if, as Paul says, ‘Christ is the power of God and the wisdom of God,’ and if the man who does not know Scripture does not know the power and wisdom of God, then ignorance of Scripture is ignorance of Christ.” One of the first things that we normally think about with studying the Scriptures is to come to know Christ better. The constant teaching of the Church, which was interestingly reflected in stained glass windows in many medievals churches, is that the Old Testament foreshadows the New Testament, and that the New Testament enlightens the Old Testament. Thus, embarking on a study of Sacred Scripture helps us not only to understand Christ better but also to understand how the whole of the Bible fits together in a beautiful fabric of salvation history. To enter into this, though, we should start with a receptivity to how God wants to shape and form us and how our own journey of holiness can become a reality. We hear in the letter to the Hebrews that “the word of God is living and effective, sharper than any two-edged sword, penetrating even between soul and spirit, joints and marrow, and able to discern reflections and thoughts of the heart” (Hebrews 4:12). His Word can work silently and subtly within us to perfect our mind and heart, intellect and will. For this to happen, though, we need to be receptive to the grace of God working within us. That, in turn, allows us to see how God’s plan of redemption can unfold in a personal way in our own lives and the lives of our loved ones. There is en enlightening passage from the book of Wisdom that draws this out a little more: “For she [wisdom] is an unfailing treasure; those who gain this treasure win the friendship of God, being commended by the gifts that come from her discipline...Whatever is hidden or plain I learned, for Wisdom, the artisan of all, taught me” (Wisdom 7:14, 21-22a). With the Sacred Scriptures, it is God who teaches us interiorly because His “divine truth speaks in us” (St. Thomas, De veritate, q. 11, a. 1, ad 1 et ad 8). His Word, being effective, speaks to the depths of our hearts, and the true Teacher enlightens us with His grace and wisdom. Unlike any other type of study or any other type of instruction, studying the Sacred Scriptures allows us to be shaped by Truth Himself. From all this, we can see that studying the Sacred Scripture means recognizing that God has a particular plan for salvation history, that He seeks to actualize it in our lives by working His grace into our souls so that we can be transformed, and that for this to happen, we need to sit at His feet so that His Word can speak to our minds and our hearts. Yes, academic teachers and wise counselors can help this process along, but ultimately it is God who transforms our lives and brings us to holiness. So how does this relate to a Dominican parish and her parishioners? Well, this means that we should take the study of Sacred Scripture very seriously. This is true in both the study that the preachers should take up in preparation for their homilies, conferences, and spiritual counsel and also the study that the parishioners should take up in their daily lives. Things like the Parish Study and our Wednesday Parish Holy Hours (where we also unpack passages from the Scriptures during the sermon) as well as spending time reading and studying Scripture at home are beautiful ways to engage in this study. There are numerous commentaries on the Bible that are also written for the laity rather than that academic, and these too can bear great fruit as we all God’s salvation in our lives. In Christ and through Our Holy Father Dominic,
