SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME WEEKLY BULLETIN A million thanks to everyone who helped us “pack-up” Christmas at Good Shepherd last week! We had amazing volunteers who stepped right in and accomplished a huge task in record time! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! VOTIVE/VIGIL CANDLES Candles are a symbol of Jesus Christ, the Light of the World. Besides being used to illuminate the places where the early Christians celebrated Mass, candles were also lighted at the tombs of martyrs and saints by the 200s, and before sacred images by the 300s. Light signifies our prayer. With the light of faith, we petition our Lord in prayer, or ask a Saint to pray with us and for us to the Lord. The word “vigil” comes from the Latin vigilia and refers to keeping watch. When someone lights a vigil candle, it symbolizes how the person desires to remain present to the Lord in prayer even though we may depart and go about our daily business. Another word for these candles is a “votive” candle and comes from the Latin votum, meaning promise, dedication or simply “prayer.” It reinforces the idea that the candles represent our prayers before God. As humans, we are body and soul and our prayers often need to be expressed in a physical, tangible way. The light of the candles is a physical reminder that points our souls to God. We light them not because we believe our prayers will be better heard by God, but because we need something visual to connect our body and soul. In addition to our seven day candles at the BVM and Saint Joseph Shrines, Good Shepherd is now blessed to have Votive Candles that you can light in Narthex A as well as in the Main Narhex (D). These candle rack systems are specially deigned to be extra safe and not produce soot. Good News - Good Works - Good Shepherd PAGE 9
