Lord, Hear our Scripture Insights Prayers for Sunday, February 20, 2022 Seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time the Deceased Carol Goett; Bernett Frances Mandracchia Many consider mercy to be the same as pity and that Dorothy M. Merrigan; John Anthony Mizzi being merciful can make one feel superior to the offender. Today’s Scripture readings invite us to a more nuanced the Sick understanding of mercy that we must aspire to if our lives Leonard Azzarello; Karen Cracco are to be holy. Una De George; Patricia Moran Maxine Ryan; Roberta Schwartz In the First Reading, we hear a story about King Saul, who, with his army, was seeking to kill David, because Our Servicemen and Women Saul was jealous of David’s popularity among the people. Second Lt. Jerry Browne, U.S. Army In a strange turn of events, Saul and his commanders SSgt. James Calfa, U.S. Army make camp very near where David and his troops are SrA Britney Ciccarelli, U.S. Air Force hiding. Thus, David and Abishai enter Saul’s camp and SSgt. Dylan Ciccarelli, U.S. Air Force even his tent in the middle of the night. Abishai suggests MSgt. Mitchell Ciccarelli, U.S. Air Force that they should kill Saul on the spot, but they choose not MST3 William DeGaray, U.S.C.G. to do so because, as David says, Saul is God’s anointed. MIDN Brian Z. DiSalvo, U. S. Navy Only God can raise a hand against him. Sgt. Victor B. Famighette, U. S. Army Major Thomas Frey, U.S.M.C. Today’s Gospel, which is part of Luke’s sermon on the Lt. Brendan Johnston, U.S. Navy plain, is a teaching on loving one’s enemies. From a Ensign Michael O’Donohoe, U.S. Navy practical point of view, we are told that we should treat Cpl. Brad John Peck, U.S.M.C. others as we would want to be treated. More important, First Lt. Kiersten Spencer, U.S. Army from a God-centered point of view, we are told to be Sgt. Michael J. Stewart, U.S. Army merciful like our heavenly Father, who is kind to everyone, Lt. Col. Kent Walsh, U.S. Army even the ungrateful and the wicked. Lt. Frederick Zappala, U.S. Army The Greek word translated here as “kind (Lk 6:35) is chréstos, meaning “useful” or “kindly.” Ironically, it was Bulletin Reflection a common name for slaves in the ancient world. In today’s Gospel reading, Jesus commands that we love our enemies. Living Stewardship: Pillar of Hospitality As you enter this upcoming week, try to be more loving and forgiving. If you are holding onto a grudge, let this be the sign you need to let it go. Let this week be the week you break free from the grudges that hold you down. St. E Melville-11

Stewardship Treasure During the peak of the pandemic, Mass attendance declined to less than 50% of January 2022: $90,301 our pre-pandemic levels. Over the last few months, as greater numbers of parishioners return to weekend Masses, our attendance has grown to over 1,000 January 2021: $75,504 attendees each weekend (3 Masses). Surprisingly, weekend donations during the Increase of 20% pandemic stayed at about 85% of pre-pandemic levels, with only a 15% decline. This was primarily due to those of you who continued to support the parish Attendance with mailed-in or direct donations each week, even when you were unable to attend Mass in person. This is the reason the comparison to last year shows January 2022: 3,350 weekend donations increased by 20%, while Mass attendance dramatically January 2021: 2,376 increased by 41% from one year to the next. Increase of 41% St. E Melville-15
