CHORLEY PARISH CHURCH OF ST. LAURENCE THE PARISH MAGAZINE SEPTEMBER TO NOVEMBER 2021 A view not seen for 83 Years The tower of St George’s Church from St. Laurence’s Car Park.
THE PARISH MAGAZINE SEPTEMBER, OCTOBER AND NOVEMBER 2021 Dear friends, “Sorry, I’m far too busy for that”. This is a predictable response of people when I ask them if they’d like to attend an Advent Quiet Day in preparation for Christmas. And in most of the parishes I’ve served it’s been true. People have been busy organizing Christmas activities, Tree Festivals, baking cakes, making jams and marmalades. Whilst it’s always been enjoyable, the great irony is that Advent is the season of preparation for Christmas, and what do we do? We make life impossible for people by giving them so much to do that finding a day to take part in spiritual preparation is an impossibility. We often moan that secular society has turned Advent into Christmas. Look no further than the Church. We can do a very good job on our own of taking Christ out of Advent. I was asked recently if we were going to return to some fund-raising events. The answer is, yes, when the time is right. On Monday 4th October we have a Day of Prayer at Whalley Abbey. A chance for us to reflect on our future. We know that – financially speaking – we are financially challenged, and we have been for longer than I have been part of St. Laurence’s. We have also lost a lot of volunteer resources. This is fine, and we can’t expect people to give what they haven’t got to give (the same as money), but it does deepen the concerns about what kind of church we can do or be. We are returning to a greater emphasis on clergy doing things – if we don’t have a pastoral team or baptism team any longer, there is no other option! So where are we headed? Trying to find the answer to that always involves prayer, or should do (unless we have made ourselves too busy to pray). We will come together, under God, to ask that we might be shown the path ahead. And whilst it might be true that our resources are dwindling, it is not true that the opportunities for growing in the faith are dwindling too. At the time of writing, we are about to launch two Home Groups – a chance for faith sharing and fellowship. We have an adult and children’s Confirmation Group beginning and also a group of First Communion children too. So that we can devote time to doing this well, we are laying aside some other aspects of church life for the time being. When we fail to prioritise time for prayer and faith-building we are like that man in the Gospel story, trying to build his house on sand. It just won’t last. I do hope that you will find time to join us at Whalley Abbey on Monday 4th October. Let’s make finding time to pray a real priority. With my love and prayers, Father Neil Page |3

Philip Staziker (Phil) 13 September, 1932 to 1 June, 2021 Phil was Chorley through and through he was baptised here and attended the Parish School. From an early age was asked to be a server a role he would fulfill for over seventy years before he took the mantle of Head Server nearly fifty years ago. There is a lovely photograph (unfortunately it is too faded to include) of Phil with a group of twelve young servers who he had trained all in their polished black shoes many of them sons of familiar names like, Fishwick, Robinson, Roberts, Lengden and Shackleton. During this time, he played a very important role leading the Church Lads and Girls Brigade rising to the rank of Captain. Phil married Joan at St George’s Church but sadly she died very young, and this left Phil a widower in his late forties. Phil worked for many years at the Horwich Loco Works before becoming the caretaker of St. Laurence’s School. After retiring Phil took an active role in assisting with our Tuesday Café run then by The Tuesday Friendly Group. He served at least eight Rectors and was a role model to hundreds of young people. He will always be remembered with great affection for his dedication and service to his Lord and to this church which he loved so dearly. Fight the good fight with all thy might! Christ is thy strength, and Christ thy right; Lay hold on life, and it shall be Thy joy and crown eternally. Requiem Eucharist for Phil Monday 13 September 18.15 and burial of Ashes Followed by a celebratory glass of wine. May he rest in peace and rise in glory P a g e | 12
G7 Speakers Conference As you may be aware, Sir Lindsay Hoyle is hosting the G7 Annual Speakers' Conference here in Chorley. As part of the programme of events around the Town, please note that St. Laurence's Church will be closed to the congregation and general public on Thursday 16th, Friday 17th and Saturday 18th September. The only service in the Parish that weekend will be the 11am Parish Eucharist. Please pray for the success and safety of this historic event. As part of the preparations for this we are once again indebted to Luke Tate and his firm of decorators for generously painting areas of the Church for us. Volunteering at St. Laurence’s We are always looking for people to join our team of volunteers. Have a look at some of the ways you could help, any offer of help will be very welcome. September Opening for our Outside Café Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday 11.00am - 1.30pm till Friday 24 September. Important Announcement regarding Taste Café At the start of the pandemic we had to close our refectory cafe provision. Realising the growing need for food and hospitality we opened TASTE outside. In the last year we have served over 6,000 meals. An amazing team of people have worked incredibly hard to maintain provision. It is time for this to draw to a close for the moment. Food is provided for the most vulnerable by different groups in the town and we will continue to offer our Monday night Open Table provision as part of this joint service. Thank you to all who have worked so hard with this venture! P a g e | 23
