St. Vincent de Paul Parish 2 Sunday Scripture Re ection One thing that I enjoy is si ng on our porch, watching the lightning and listening to the rain and thunder when we have a storm. Of course when I am on our porch, I am safe from the elements. When I am out and the storms come, I don’t enjoy them at all. Violent storms strike fear into us, from small children to adults. Living in Chicago has taught us that we cannot control the weather and the past several years have shown us the increasingly destruc ve power of storms due to climate change. We can relate to the fear of the disciples in today’s Gospel. Caught in the middle of the sea, they fear the wind, rain and waves. They are in danger of capsizing and drowning and Jesus is asleep in the boat, seemingly not concerned about what is happening. Yet when they wake him, he does something remarkable by stopping the storm! This appears to terrify the disciples even more because only God has that type of power. They ask “Who is this whom even wind and sea obey?” In this short passage, Jesus is invi ng us to recognize that he truly is God. He is not simply a wise man, a prophet or a teacher. He is God made esh living among us. We are invited to re ect this belief in our lives because if Jesus is God, that belief calls us to conversion and a change of heart. While it is a good thing to be kind and compassionate, if we do so without connec ng it to our faith in Jesus, it emp es our ac ons of meaning. As Paul says to the Corinthians in the second reading, “the love of Christ impels us” to live for others, following in the footsteps of the Lord Jesus. Let us allow ourselves to be transformed by the love of Christ. Let us allow this love to shine forth in service and generosity to others in our lives and world. Let us live our lives with that sure hope that Jesus is God-with-us, the Lord who is always present to us in the stormy parts of our lives. He deeply loves each one of us and is there with us always in our journeys of life. Twelfth Sunday in Ordinary Time June 20, 2021 fl ti ti fl tti ti ti fl ti

St. Vincent de Paul Parish 6 Pray : Serve : Share We need your help! Fund-a-Need We are excited to launch a new initiative: Fund-a-Need. What is it? Sometimes unanticipated but still significant needs arise that are above and beyond our regular budget. Such special needs might be supplies, services, or enhancements that help maintain quality care and enhance the comfort, well-being, and satisfaction of our seniors. Please consider supporting these important needs, for your gift will help us maintain our commitment to our deserving Residents. Our first need to fund? A long overdue upgrade to the decades-old hardware and obsolete signal delivery system that impact television reception at St. Mary’s Home. We want to offer the best for our Residents, and this upgrade will ensure high- definition reception, present more choices and greater flexibility, and give our Residents over 40 new television channels to enjoy! Our goal? $7,500. The result? Smiling faces. Grateful hearts. We thank you for your generous support. Any excess monies will be put toward our next highlighted Fund-a-Need. So please check our website (www.littlesistersofthepoorchicago.org) regularly for updates. And again, thank you! Little Sisters of the Poor, St. Mary's Home 2325 N. St. Vincent de Paul Parish 12 News & Notes ON NEW TITLES, STORMS AT SEA, AND FATHER’S DAY Copyright 2021 by John B. Reynolds (john@jrwrites.com On Father’s Day 2021, I wear a title I’ve not worn before: grandfather. My wife Gail missed the grandmother title on Mother’s Day, but not by much. Our daughter Sarah and her husband Eric’s baby boy Jack was born on May 18--three days past the due date--at about 4:00 AM. My sister Mary and I had been agreeing months prior that May 18 would be a good day, as this was our father’s birthday. It wasn’t until the day of Jack’s arrival, though, that I made this cosmic connection: Dad was born on May 18, 1921; Jack joined us one hundred years to the day later on May 18, 2021. When I told my friend Rick all of this, he responded, “That is no accident, my friend.” I see it the same. Sarah’s baby doctor is downtown, working out of the Northwestern Hospital complex. With Eric and Gail at work most days, it often fell to me to drive Sarah to her appointments. We chatted about her job, about the size of the child growing inside her, about her plans for Jack’s arrival. Sarah has long impressed me for the way she carries herself. She has smarts and confidence that I couldn’t touch at her age. Or now. And she gets these from her mother. Sarah’s water broke during a 7:30 AM exam on 5/17 when she was downtown at her doctor’s office for a non-stress test for Jack. Sarah called me as Eric was parking the car at the hospital. She was walking the short blocks to meet him. This was a lot to take in, and I needed clarity. “So…your water broke during your appointment at the doctor’s office, and now you’re essentially in labor, you’re still dripping, and you’re walking--by yourself--to the hospital, where Eric has already parked the car?” I asked. “Yeah,” she answered. Amazing. I think I had told Sarah years ago, but I told her again that morning about a book I once read in which the author referred to one of the individuals on a sailing vessel as “a good man in a storm.” I told Sarah that her mom to me is the epitome of the words. I told Sarah, too, that she is her mother’s daughter. Gail and Sarah. Two good men in a storm. And speaking of good men in a storm, God addresses Job today in the first reading “…out of the storm,” saying, “Who shut within doors the sea, when it burst forth from the womb…” And in the Gospel, Jesus is asleep in the boat when a rough storm blows in. Terrified, the disciples wake him and say, “Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?” Jesus rebukes the wind and chides the sea (“Quiet! Be still!”) and calm ensues. This is what good men do in a storm. They bring calm. Hmmm… My dad was a good man in a storm for me several times, even when I thought he wasn’t paying attention. I like to think I was--and remain--a good man in a storm for my children. Sarah and Eric will be good men in a storm for Jack as he grows up and out into the world. Accordingly, this is a great reading for today. Of course, you may say it’s mere coincidence that this Jesus-calming-the storm-at-sea passage just happens to fall on Father’s Day. Maybe. But you know what I say? I say exactly what my friend Rick said re: the 5/18/1921 – 5/18/2021 gap: “That is no accident, my friend.” Happy Father’s Day. St. Vincent de Paul Parish 13 Re ection om Fr. Murphy Father’s Day Today’s story comes from my cousin Jane. She is a lovely person who has not always had an easy life. She has an inspired view of life and seems to always be aware of the presence of God. She sometimes preaches on Sundays in her little church in Iowa. I thought this story would be a good way to celebrate Father’s Day. Here is Jane’s story: The other day I was hanging out with a friend. This friend is Christian but does not always act like one. Some days she is in line with God’s word; some days life’s struggles get the best of her. As our eyes met, I really wanted to say something about it but decided to let the Lord speak to her heart knowing nothing I could say would have the same effect as her Father’s words. So I prayed with her. After some time passed, I winked at her… And walked away from the mirror. Thanks, Jane, for your inspiration today. I miss my own father every day. One of the irst gifts my father gave me was teaching me how to tie my shoes. The last thing he gave me was a wink. Give someone a wink today.
