Machin Messenger Serving Minnitaki, Eagle River, Vermilion Bay And surrounding area Volume 20 issue 6 June 7, 2018 June has arrived and the peak of the busy seasonal business, if it has not arrived yet, will do so soon. People will also be taking holidays, getting summer projects started and finished and traveling. We can enjoy the light we lost in December and January now and hopefully reclaim some of our health after a particularly illness- marked winter in many households. The ice is gone, the warm weather is here. It’s time to breathe and relax a bit now. So to news. Many in Eagle River have experienced the ruts, bumps and holes in the parking lot Eagle River mail box area at the Eagle River Rec Centre parking lot. It’s the first winter having the mail boxes located at the Rec Centre and the traffic of everyone picking up their mail took its toll on the lot. We are under the im- pression that Canada Post has a responsibility to look after some of the upkeep of the area due to the increase in traffic and we are talking with them about maintenance of the lot. One way or another it needs a fix and now that we know what kind of traffic and resulting wear the area will get, a more permanent longer term solution must be found. Tender for the Town-line Rd. reconstruction has gone out. At the time I’m writing this we have not hired a con- tractor for the job but we are looking to do so as soon as possible so work can be started and completed in a timely manner. Fort Vermilion has new owners and I’d like to wish them the best of luck with their new venture this tourist season. And while I’m at it, good luck to all the owners of local businesses this season. I hope you make great profits and have a great time doing it. During recent Council and Public Works meetings, we have had a number of delegations regarding several dif- ferent topics. A delegation is an official opportunity for the public to ask Council questions about a certain top- ic, raise concerns or make a request to Council. Your words are put into the official minutes and we as Council can answer you to the best of our knowledge. Delegations can be one person, or a group of people and there are delegation request forms in the Municipal Office. If you have serious concerns or requests, it’s the best way to go. If you want the best result from a delegation, here are a few tips. Get to the point. Try to let Council know what your issue is within the first minute. There is no point in beating around the bush. Along these lines, tell us exactly what you want done about it. What are you asking us to do? Don’t be vague about your goal for coming and talking to council. Also, have a one or more suggestions about how to solve a problem or issue. Come with a problem, your goal or desire, and suggestion(s) for a solution. Finally, plan on talking for no more than five minutes. You have officially fifteen minutes to talk, so try to save the last ten minutes for Coun- cil and your delegation to discuss the issue. Now, just because you have an official open meeting with Council does not mean that all your problems will be solved. They won’t, at least not quickly. Council may not be legally able to follow your request, may choose not to for a number of reasons, or may have to find out more about the issue on our side as far as budgets, legali- ties, etc. But, a delegation at an official meeting makes your words have more weight. This is especially helpful when we go up the chain and ask, say, a provincial government agency or Ministry to help solve the problem. Well, that is all for now. I hope your lawn mowers, BBQs, garden tools, fishing reels and decks all get a great workout this month. Have a great June in the best place in the world to live. Sincerely, Drew Myers

Machin Messenger—Page 7 CAMPING/RV’ING TIPS Arrive at campsite in daylight so that you are able to look over the campsite and check for any glass/sharp objects, poison ivy, insect nests, dead branches that may fall, or any other hazards. Keep campsite tidy to avoid accidents. Dispose of all trash in proper bins to help prevent wildlife from coming into campsite. Ensure that the extension cord used for connecting to a campground’s electricity supply is in good condition and of a suitable gauge wire to handle the load placed upon it. Cords that are frayed or damaged in any way must be replaced immediately. Check with the MNR (www.ontario.ca/forestfire), local authorities and the campground’s owners whether open fires are currently being permitted. Be sure the fire is in a safe, open area, well away from flammables and other natural combustibles. Use only paper or kindling, never flammable liquids, to start the fire. Keep simple firefighting equipment, such as shovels, water or sand nearby. Do not leave the fire unattended. Children should always be under supervision around a fire. Loose clothing can easily catch fire; don’t reach into an open fire to rearrange pieces of wood. When it’s time to put out the flames, use water to drown the fire; be sure to stay on the site until there are no glowing embers. Without adequate venting and fresh air, propane appliances can rapidly produce dangerous levels of carbon monoxide (CO), an invisible, odourless and tasteless gas that causes serious injury and even death – never use a portable propane heater inside your tent – or any other enclosed space. Be sure to follow these tips to keep your mobile home-away-from-home CO free and safe: Never block the combustion exhaust vent Have a certified contractor inspect and maintain your propane equipment annually Use only approved appliances and equipment, stamped with CGA/CSA/ULC seal, that have been installed by a registered technician Install smoke alarms and CO alarms near sleeping area(s) as well as a propane leak alarm Ensure all propane stoves and heaters are properly connected, particularly after driving on bumpy roads, which may loosen connections Turn off all propane-powered appliances and the propane before driving Use only designated spaces outside RV (not on roof or rear of RV) or specially designed compartments that are sealed off from interior of RV for storage and transportation of gas cylinders, relief valves, regulating equipment, all flammable liquids, etc. When using stove, open overhead vent or turn on the exhaust fan and open a window Do not use stove as a heat source Store all combustibles well away from kitchen area Before refilling shut off all interior burners, pilot lights, appliances and automatic ignition switches as well as the RV motor and all passengers should exit the RV Never block escape routes, so that everyone has a clear path to quickly evacuate in the case of an emergency Come see us at Fort Vermilion on Father’s Day, June 17, and pick up your Spring into Summer package!
