ife Pra A Prayer For Our Country y for L y for L ife ra O Most Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of Mercy, at this most critical time, we entrust P the United States of America to your loving care. Most Holy Mother, we beg you to reclaim this land for the glory of your Son. Overwhelmed with the burden of the sins of our nation, we cry to you from the depths of our hearts and seek refuge in your motherly protection. Look down with mercy upon us and touch the hearts of our people. Open our minds to the great worth of human life and to the responsibilities that accompany human freedom. Free us from the falsehoods that lead to the evil of abortion and threaten the sanctity of family life. Grant our country the wisdom to proclaim that God’s law is the foundation on which this nation was founded, and that He alone is the True Source of our cherished rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. O Merciful Mother, give us the courage to reject the culture of death and strength to build a new Culture of Life. UPCOMING FEAST: St. James, Apostle (Monday, July 25) Monday, July 25 is the Church’s feast of James (Greek Iakobos, i.e. “Jacob”), son of Zebedee, sometimes called “James the Great”. This latter title distinguishes him from another James, the first bishop of Jerusalem (Gal 1:19; 2:9), known as “the Just” or “the Lesser”, because of his short stature. Matthew, Mark, and Luke all list James and his brother John, the sons of Zebedee, as among the twelve male disciples whom Jesus named Apostles (Matt 10:1-4; Mk 3:13- 19; Lk 6:13-16). The word “apostle” comes from the Greek word apostolos, meaning “one who is sent out”. James, along with John his brother, was thus one of twelve envoys that the Lord Jesus authorized to speak and act in His name and to spread the Kingdom of God. Mark mentions that Jesus nicknamed the brothers “Sons of Thunder”, a reference to their hotheaded personalities (see Lk 9:51-56). Having been initially called with his brother by Jesus while fishing with Peter and Andrew, (Matt 4:18-22; Mk 1:16-20; Lk 5:1-11) James was privileged to witness pivotal events in the earthly ministry of Jesus and the early Church. Matthew, Mark, and Luke place James with John and Peter at Jesus’ Transfiguration (Mt 17:1-9; Mk 9:2-9; Lk 8:28-36) and His Agony at Gethsemane (Matt 26:36-46; Mk 14:32-42; Lk 22:39-46), as well as at other lesser events such as the healing of Peter’s mother-in-law (Mk 1:29) and the raising of Jairus’ daughter (Mk 5:37; Lk 8:51). John reports that he was among the disciples who witnessed Jesus alive after His resurrection by the Sea of Tiberias (Jn 21:2). He was also present in the Upper Room after the Ascension (Acts 1:13). At one point during Jesus’ journey to Jerusalem, James and John tried to lobby Jesus for special seating in His kingdom (Matt 20:20-23; Mk 10:35-40). Jesus replied that although only His Father could grant such a request, they would eventually drink His cup - a veiled reference to their martyrdom. That violent destiny befell James in AD. 44 when he was executed by King Herod Agrippa I to appease the Jerusalem Jews (Acts 12:1- 3), who were enraged at the growth of the church there under James’ watch. He is considered the first apostle to be martyred. Tradition has it that James traveled to Spain and preached there for a time before his death, after which his body was miraculously transferred by angels to the city of Compostela, which has since become a world- famous pilgrimage site. He is venerated as the patron saint of Spain (Compostela and Galicia especially!) and pilgrims. Our parish will celebrate this feast with a sung Mass at 6pm on Monday, July 25. All are invited to come and pray for our parish and community through the intercession of St. James the Great.
17th Sunday in Ordinary Time "Whoever Asks, Receives Abundantly" Today, Jesus tells of a man who was visited by one friend but needed three loaves. This is reminiscent of Abraham's situation under the oaks of Mamre: three visitors, but one person. For everyone who asks for God's presence receives abundantly. God comes in Three Persons. One holy bread nourishes us with the love of the whole Trinity. Lord Jesus Christ, teach me to pray as John taught his disciples. Give me the grace to have the courage to say to God: "Father." You live and reign for ever and ever. Amen. -Rev. Jakub Grzybowski
Year C Gospel Today < K D’S > Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time | Luke 11:1-13 Jesus told his disciples “When you pray, say: Father, hallowed be your name, and KORNER your Kingdom come. GAVE US Give us this day our daily bread; THE WORDS And forgive us our trespasses As we forgive those who trespass against us; FOR OUR And lead us not into tempta on, LORD’S But deliver us from evil. PRAYER, Amen THE OUR Jesus tells us “be persistent.” FATHER. Think of a me when you prayed, asking God for help. Never forget to thank God for all He gives us.
SEVENTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME “Jesus was praying in a certain place, and when he had finished, one of his disciples said to him: ‘Lord teach us to pray just as John taught his disciples.’ He said, ‘when you pray, say....And I tell you, ask and you shall receive, seek and you will find, knock and the door will be opened to you.’” How familiar! Can I picture Jesus at prayer, as when He was in the garden of Gethsemane, asking His Father to take the cup ‘but not my will, but yours be done?’ Can I picture Him praying as He blessed the loaves and fishes? Can I see Him at prayer as He prepared the breakfast for the apostles at the seashore? Can I hear His prayer as He said ‘little girl get up?’ Jesus at prayer. He not only provided us with the words we recite so frequently, but we also hear Him tell us – right now - ask, seek, knock. Do I accept His teaching, as He taught the disciple who asked?
