GATHERING IN GOD’S NAME Welcome Entrance Hymn TIS 477 1 Jesus calls us here to meet him as, through word and song and prayer, we affirm God’s promised presence where his people live and care. Praise the God who keeps his promise; praise the Son who calls us friends ; praise the Spirit who, among us, to our hopes and fears attends. 2 Jesus calls us to confess him Word of life and Lord of all, sharer of our flesh and frailness, saving all who fail or fall. Tell his holy human story ; tell his tales that all may hear ; tell the world that Christ in glory came to earth to meet us here. 3 Jesus calls us to each other, vastly different though we are ; race and class and sex and language such are barriers he derides Join the hand of friend and stranger ; join the hands of age and youth ; join the faithful and the doubter in their common search for truth. Jesus Calls Us - John Bell, Iona Community Greeting Words and Music - ©1989 Iona Community & WGRG Blessed be God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Blessed be God's kingdom, now and for ever. The Lord be with you. And also with you. 2
Let us pray Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known and from whom no secrets are hidden; cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy name, through Christ our Lord. Amen. The Kyrie Confession and Absolution God is love and we are his children. There is no room for fear in love. We love because he loved us first. Silence Let us confess our sins in penitence and faith. Lord, we have sinned in thought, word and deed: Lord have mercy Lord have mercy We are truly sorry and we ask you to forgive us: Christ have mercy Christ have mercy Help us by your Spirit to live in newness of life: Lord have mercy Lord have mercy May the God of love and power forgive you and free you from your sins, heal and strengthen you by his Spirit, and raise you to new life in Christ our Lord. Amen. 3
Singing God’s Praises —The Gloria Glory to God in the highest, and peace to God’s people on earth. Lord God, heavenly King, almighty God and Father, we worship you, we give you thanks, we praise you for your glory. Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, Lord God, Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world: have mercy on us; you are seated at the right hand of the Father: receive our prayer. For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen. The Prayer of the Day Everliving God, by whose Spirit the whole body of the Church is governed and sanctified: hear the prayers we offer for all your faithful people, that in the ministry to which you have called them each may serve you in holiness and truth; through our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. Children and Youth Talk MINISTRY OF THE WORD The First Reading (1 Kings 8.22-30, 8.41-43) 22 Then Solomon stood before the altar of the Lord in the presence of all the assembly of Israel, and spread out his hands to heaven. 23 He said, ‘O Lord , God of Israel, there is no God like you in heaven above or on earth beneath, keeping covenant and steadfast love for your servants who walk before you with all their heart, 24 the covenant that you kept for your servant my father David as you declared to him; you 4
promised with your mouth and have this day fulfilled with your hand. 25 Therefore, O Lord , God of Israel, keep for your servant my father David that which you promised him, saying, “There shall never fail you a successor before me to sit on the throne of Israel, if only your children look to their way, to walk before me as you have walked before me.” 26 Therefore, O God of Israel, let your word be confirmed, which you promised to your servant my father David. 27 ‘But will God indeed dwell on the earth? Even heaven and the highest heaven cannot contain you, much less this house that I have built! 28 Have regard to your servant’s prayer and his plea, O Lord my God, heeding the cry and the prayer that your servant prays to you today; 29 that your eyes may be open night and day towards this house, the place of which you said, “My name shall be there”, that you may heed the prayer that your servant prays towards this place. 30 Hear the plea of your servant and of your people Israel when they pray towards this place; O hear in heaven your dwelling-place; heed and forgive. 41 ‘Likewise when a foreigner, who is not of your people Israel, comes from a distant land because of your name 42 —for they shall hear of your great name, your mighty hand, and your outstretched arm—when a foreigner comes and prays towards this house, 43 then hear in heaven your dwelling-place, and do according to all that the foreigner calls to you, so that all the peoples of the earth may know your name and fear you, as do your people Israel, and so that they may know that your name has been invoked on this house that I have built.’ The response: For the Word of the Lord: Thanks be to God. Psalm (Psalm 84) 1 How lovely is your dwelling-place: O Lord God of hosts! 2 My soul has a desire and longing to enter the courts of the Lord: my heart and my flesh rejoice in the living God. 3 The sparrow has found her a home, and the swallow a nest where she may lay her young: even your altar, O Lord of hosts, my King and my God. 4 Blessed are those who dwell in your house: they will always be praising you. 5 Blessed are those whose strength is in you: in whose heart are the highways to Zion; 5
6 Who, going through the valley of dryness, find there a spring from which to drink: till the autumn rain shall clothe it with blessings. 7 They go from strength to strength: they appear, every one of them, before the God of gods in Zion. 8 O Lord God of hosts, hear my prayer: give ear, O God of Jacob. 9 Behold, O God, him who reigns over us: and look upon the face of your anointed. 10 One day in your courts is better than a thousand: I would rather stand at the threshold of the house of my God than dwell in the tents of ungodliness. 11 For the Lord God is a light and a shield, the Lord gives favour and honour: and no good thing will he withhold from those who walk in innocence. 12 O Lord God of hosts: blessed are those who put their trust in you. The Gospel (John 6.56-69) When the Gospel is announced Glory to you Lord Jesus Christ. 56 Jesus said to the crowd: ‘Those who eat my flesh and drink my blood abide in me, and I in them. 57 Just as the living Father sent me, and I live because of the Father, so whoever eats me will live because of me. 58 This is the bread that came down from heaven, not like that which your ancestors ate, and they died. But the one who eats this bread will live for ever.’ 59 He said these things while he was teaching in the synagogue at Capernaum. 60 When many of his disciples heard it, they said, ‘This teaching is difficult; who can accept it?’ 61 But Jesus, being aware that his disciples were complaining about it, said to them, ‘Does this offend you? 62 Then what if you were to see the Son of Man ascending to where he was before? 63 It is the spirit that gives life; the flesh is useless. The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life. 64 But among you there are some who do not believe.’ For Jesus knew from the first who were the ones that did not believe, and who was the one that would betray him. 65 And he said, ‘For this reason I have told you that no one can come to me unless it is granted by the Father.’ 66 Because of this many of his disciples turned back and no longer went about with him. 67 So Jesus asked the 6
twelve, ‘Do you also wish to go away?’ 68 Simon Peter answered him, ‘Lord, to whom can we go? You have the words of eternal life. 69 We have come to believe and know that you are the Holy One of God.’ After the Gospel Praise to you Lord Jesus Christ. The Sermon Silence for reflection Affirmation of Faith—Apostles’ Creed I ask you now to affirm as yours the faith of the Church. I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God's only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father; from there he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. The Prayer of the Church Let us pray for the world and the church Please be seated The response for the prayers: Lord, in your mercy hear our prayer. 7
At the end Almighty God, you have promised to hear our prayers. Grant that what we have asked in faith we may by your grace receive, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. THE GREETING OF PEACE Please stand We are the body of Christ His Spirit is with us. The peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you. The Offertory Hymn TIS 520 1 Christ, enthroned in heavenly splendour, first-begotten from the dead, you alone our strong defender, lifting up your people’s head: alleluia, alleluia, Jesus, true and living bread. 2 Here our humblest homage pay we, here in loving reverence bow; here for faith’s discernment pray we, lest we fail to know you now: alleluia, alleluia, you are here, we ask not how. 3 Though the lowliest form now veils you as of old in Bethlehem, here as there your angels hail you, branch and flower of Jesse's stem; alleluia, alleluia, we in worship join with them. 6 Life-imparting heavenly manna, stricken rock with streaming side, heaven and earth with loud hosanna worship you, the Lamb who died, alleluia, alleluia, risen, ascended, glorified! The Prayer over the Gifts Blessed are you, Lord, God of all creation. Through your goodness we have these gifts to share. Accept and use our offerings for your glory For the feeding of your people and for the service of your kingdom. Blessed be God for ever. THE GREAT THANKSGIVING The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. Holy God, whom neither earth nor heaven can contain, We gather around the mystery of your grace. You called your chosen people to abide with you in covenant and steadfast love. and through them you called all the peoples of the earth, to know your name and come before you in godly fear. When your children wondered if you would indeed dwell upon the earth, you embodied and renewed your covenant in the flesh of your Son Jesus Christ. And so we thank and praise you, joining with cherubim and seraphim and the company of heaven, singing the never ending hymn of your glory. Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. Faithful God, there is no one else to whom we can go; you alone have the power of resurrection and the words of eternal life. Your Son promised that those who eat his flesh and drink his blood abide in him, and he in them. Sanctify your people that they may come to believe and know that you are the Holy One. Send down your Holy Spirit on this bread and this cup, that they may be for us the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ; who, at supper with his disciples, took bread, and gave you thanks. 9
He broke the bread, gave it to them and said: Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of me. When supper was ended he took the cup of wine. Again he praised you, gave it to them and said: Drink this, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me. So, Father, we remember all that Jesus did, in him we plead with confidence his sacrifice made once for all upon the cross. Bringing before you the bread of life and cup of salvation, we proclaim his death and resurrection until he comes in glory. Let us proclaim the mystery of faith: Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. Lord of all life, help us to work together for that day when your kingdom comes and justice and mercy will be seen in all the earth. Look with favour on your people, gather us in your loving arms and bring us with all the saints to feast at your table in heaven. Through Christ, and with Christ, and in Christ, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honour and glory are yours, O loving Father, for ever and ever. Blessing and honour and glory and power are yours for ever and ever. Amen. 10
The Lord’s Prayer As our Saviour Christ has taught us, so we pray, Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and for ever. Amen. BREAKING OF THE BREAD AND COMMUNION We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. We who are many are one body, for we all share in the one bread. We sing: Jesus, Lamb of God, have mercy on us Jesus, bearer of our sins, have mercy upon us Jesus, redeemer of the world, grant us your peace. The Gifts of God for the people of God. This is the Lord’s Table. All who seek God’s mercy are welcome. THE SENDING OUT OF GOD’S PEOPLE Living God, increase in us the healing power of your love. Guide and direct us that we may please you in all things, for the sake of Jesus Christ our Lord. Father, we offer ourselves to you as a living sacrifice through Jesus Christ our Lord. Send us out in the power of your Spirit to live and work to your praise and glory. 11
Notices The Final Hymn TIS 547 1 Be thou my vision, O Lord of my heart; naught be all else to me, save that thou art. Thou my best thought, by day or by night, waking or sleeping, thy presence my light. 2 Be thou my wisdom, be thou my true word; I ever with thee, and thou with me, Lord. Thou my great Father, thy child let me be, thou in me dwelling and I one with thee. 3 Be thou my armour, my sword for the fight. Be thou my dignity, thou my delight, thou my soul’s shelter, and thou my high tower. Raise thou me heavenward, O Power of my power. 4 Riches I scorn, and the world’s empty praise; thou my inheritance, now and always. Thou and thou only, the first in my heart, Ruler of heaven, my treasure thou art. 5 High King of heaven, after victory won may I reach heaven’s joys, O bright heaven’s Sun! Heart of my own heart, whatever befall, still be my vision, O Ruler of all. Parish Council Tuesday 10 August 2021 Council continued its discussions on the spiritual discernment process which has been adopted to shape our change journey. It is important that as a faith community we listen openly for how we are being called to participate in God’s ongoing mission in the world so that a deep missional change can be revealed to us and a pathway for change can be laid. Other matters relating to the future development of the Parish were discussed, particularly the need to integrate important discussions taking place on how we do childrens’ outreach with broader Parish Council deliberations on change. The need to maintain parish life together in a Covid environment which has seen us physically separated for much of the past eighteen months was also discussed and Parish Council resolved to investigate the possibility of a Parish picnic at a location close to Melbourne later in the year when the weather is warmer. ‘Covid-safe’ arrangements were considered. The Diocese continues to provide regular updates in line with adjustments to Government policy in this area, and we have reviewed our Covid-safe plan for when Church reopens, most likely with the 4 square metre per person rule. Discussions were held around child safety. A child safety officer has been appointed to oversee this important work. A new child safety clearance application form has been distributed by the Diocese for completion by those in the Parish who regularly have contact with children. The Parish Office is developing a list of parishioners who will need to complete this form and assistance will be provided by the Office for those having difficulty completing it. In view of the current Covid disruptions it was agreed that the Diocese be contacted with a view to reviewing the required end of August submission date for these applications. Occupational health and safety issues were reviewed, in particular the pressure cleaning of stairs near the Church entry and the removal of electrical cords associated with the streaming of services. It was agreed to proceed on both these issues. The Treasurer provided an update on the Parish budget. While we are in a reasonable position with regard to MACO funding which has provided funding for the establishment of live streaming of services, the impact of Covid on Church attendance and income may present a challenge, particularly now that Government assistance has concluded. In general terms, at the present time monthly Parish expenditure is running in excess of income by some $2000. It is not clear at this time how much of this shortfall is of a temporary nature due to Covid. Given Parish reserves this matter is not considered urgent at present, however income and expenditure will continue to be monitored closely by Council. 14 -Stephen Mather
