Comment Christ Episcopal Church, Corning Technology Upgrade Donors March 27, 2021—April 27, 2021 Tier 1 ($0-$249) – The Modem Club The Family of the late Stan Fuller Tier 5: ($1,000 & up) – Streaming Club Grant from the Episcopal Diocese of Rochester ($1,100) Thank you to all who have donated to our technology upgrades. We are getting close! DONATIONS ARE STILL BEING ACCEPTED! A photo of Father Troy taken on April 18, 2021. The photo is courtesy of one of our wardens who was attending virtually. Isn't technology great! -EDUCATION CORNER- I love springtime. The trees that have stood stark against grey skies are beginning to bud and add green to our days, lawn mowers begin to drone in the distance, and gardeners finally get their hands dirty planting. Another practice the warmer weather sparks in us is spring cleaning. We who have been stuck inside (even more so than usual during COVID) take a look at our closets, cupboards, and drawers and want to clean them out- to start afresh to look at things anew. In the northern hemisphere, spring weather and the Easter festival of 50 days seem to break open around the same time. This same impulse to spring clean, dig deep, to get outside is all easily applied to our spiritual lives. As some vaccine-induced hope for normalcy emerges for this summer, it is important to take a look at our spirituality. In the spirituality course that I teach at Roberts Wesleyan College, I introduce to the students the idea that all human beings have a spirituality. Every single person, no matter what. We all have a profound need for meaning and purpose, needs for love, connection, belonging, awe, hope, beauty, mystery, expression, courage, etc. Those are the foundational categories of spirituality. As followers of Jesus Christ, we Christians understand that “the Christian spiritual path is life itself, lit up by the Holy Spirit,” (Mthr. Julia Gatta). We understand that in those very ordinary human needs, in those foundational categories, they find their truest source at the end of the day, in God in Christ- found in the fabric of our lives. The Holy Spirit lights up even our most ordinary of days, even when we aren’t paying attention. God uses the simple ordinary things and material of our lives to speak to us. To nourish us. To inspire awe, wonder, play, creativity, and connection. My hope for us as a parish this Easter season is that we take the gifts of the warmer weather to recognize the Holy Spirit already lighting up our lives. God is already at work in your life, and it Rev. Joshua Barrett might look much more ordinary than you’d think. 6 Visit Christ Church on the Web
May 2021 MAY PARISHIONER SPOTLIGHT To help us feel more connected during COVID-19, we will present a "Parishioner Spotlight" in upcoming issues of Comment. If you want your households’ story to be featured, you can submit a picture and information about your household by emailing the parish office. Please put “Parishioner Spotlight” in the subject line. Everyone is welcome and encouraged to participate. Anne, Chris, Tamriko, and Sam Walters Anne, Chris, Tamriko, and Sam live in Corning. Anne was born and raised in Corning and her parents are originally from Elmira. Chris was born in Savannah, GA and lived all across the US as part of a military family. In January, 2008, Anne and Chris met at work in Washington, DC at IREX, an international nonprofit. They both worked on international education exchange programs after having recently completed their respective Masters degrees, Anne at George Washington University and Chris at Columbia University. Less than a year later, Chris took a job as the Country Director/Education Programs Manager in the IREX office in the country of Georgia where he previously served as a Peace Corps Volunteer. Engaged in Amsterdam (Anne brought the ring with her) in February, 2009, Anne moved to Georgia in the summer of 2009 and taught English at the British Georgian Academy. They moved back to the US in the fall of 2012, settling in Corning, where Anne teaches 3rd Grade at Carder Elementary School and Chris works as the Grants Manager & Gallery Curator for The ARTS Council of the Southern Finger Lakes. Chris also serves on the Vestry of Christ Episcopal. Tamriko is currently a 1st Grader at Carder Elementary School and loves dancing and all things scientific. Sam will start preschool in the fall and currently majors in train track building and maintenance four days a week at their grandparents’ house. They love travelling around the region and internationally with their children, and occasionally, will stop for a picture if the light is just right. Both Anne and Chris were raised Catholic and began looking for a church to attend after Tamriko was born. After trying out a handful of churches in the area, they settled on Christ Episcopal. Beyond the beautiful and tranquil architecture, and that it was a mere 3 block walk from their house, they were immediately drawn to the warm congregation along with Troy and his loving vision for a community that welcomes all. Since then, their view of the church has only grown in esteem as they’ve experienced its vital and humanistic message for what Christianity can be. www.christepiscopalcorning.org 7
