About Us Worship Celebrating God’s love Caring Sharing God’s love with one another Mission Taking God’s love into the world St Aidan’s strives to be an authentic, loving community, which fosters care and respect for one another. We have a strong sense of belonging and are welcoming. There are long shared histories within the parish, which foster friendships and loyalty. It is inclusive and diverse, there is wide-ranging involvement in all aspects of worship and parish life by its members. We value our loving connections within the parish; the care we have for each other, the elderly, the children and youth, and taking that out to the wider world through mission. The parish does not easily fit labels such as conservative, liberal or evangelical, being a comfortable and compatible blend of theological approaches. We value quality worship, with a strong Anglican character, with members of all ages having opportunities to contribute and use their spiritual gifts. We value thoughtful and challenging sermons, based on sound biblical teaching and opportunities to engage with theological discussion in small groups. We value prayer, and the place it has in growing faith. We value the work we do for mission and outreach to seek justice for those in need, to live out our faith. We value our buildings, their historical significance and the sense of community that they foster. 3
Our Priorities Our priorities reflect the Diocese ‘Healthy Church’ model, along with our core vision and values statement set out earlier - ‘Worship, Caring, Mission’. The statements may appear somewhat unrelated, however they are the consensus of the responses given at the Parish Consultation held in February under each 'Healthy Church' pillar. Knowing God • To work on the music aspect of worship in particular to successfully achieve diversity – combining and integrating both traditional and modern and doing it well. Shaping Community • To maintain the sense of a loving community within all our Parish groups so that the whole congregation is included. • Prioritise pastoral care. Growing in Christ • Nurture and grow the next generations through strong youth and children’s ministries, extending opportunities for roles for young people in the church, and ensuring there are choices of worship styles offered. • To prioritise activities to maintain and enhance engagement and relevance, so that we continue to grow in a sustainable manner as a parish that's intergenerational, active and diverse. Living Beyond Ourselves • Keep looking outwards and continue to strengthen our support of the mission groups we are working with. • Continue to look for opportunities to connect with local businesses and community groups. 4
Qualities, Skills and Attributes we are looking for in our new Vicar • A good public speaker. • Energetic and enthusiastic. • Approachable interpersonal skills and a good listener. • Inclusive, relates well to all age groups and is able to keep us united. • Prayerful and a person of faith. • Loves liturgy and music. • Able to deliver theologically and biblically sound and concise sermons. • Prepared to appropriately and constructively challenge the congregations. • Compassionate and understanding, a good listener. • Willing and able to visit the sick and elderly regularly. • An experienced administrator able to chair public and vestry meetings competently. • A capable organiser who is able to delegate well. • A team builder committed to working cooperatively with competent and experienced laypeople. • Is willing to commit to a tenure of reasonable length. 5
Our Parish Ministry Team St Aidan’s is typically a two priest parish. In 2021, St Aidan’s has one ordained full-time member of staff - the Associate Priest who is currently Priest in Charge. They are supported by the following paid employees: • Full-time Parish Administrator • Part-time (10 hours/wk) Children’s Ministry Leader (Currently recruiting) • Part-time (20 hours/wk) Youth Pastor • Part-time (3 hours/wk) Website and Social Media Content Manager The parish also benefits greatly from the services of a retired Bishop, and a non-stipendiary priest who works mostly with the elderly. Both participate actively in our worship life. At present Vestry is structured so that each member oversees a specific area of church life. These include Synod, finance, property, outreach, and personnel. Sunday Service and Worship There are three Sunday services at St Aidan’s. Both morning services are based on the liturgies from A New Zealand Prayer Book to varying degrees. Laypeople are involved as Liturgists, Intercessors, Readers, Chalice Assistants and Prayer Ministers. 8am Holy Communion Service – a more traditional service. 9:30am Holy Communion Family Service – with separate simultaneous programmes for youth and children. This has the largest congregation. 5pm Evening Service – every fourth Sunday of each month, with singing, discussion, fellowship, and a shared meal. The 8am and 9:30am services share a time of morning tea and fellowship in the Gathering Area following each service. These also provide an opportunity to meet newcomers, browse the church library, catch up on activities of interest, and celebrate significant occasions. Small but dedicated congregations attend an 11:30am mid-week services of Communion on Wednesdays, and prayers at 9am on Thursdays in the Gathering Area. St Aidan's also offers a comprehensive timetable of services based on the liturgical calendar. Services are held throughout Easter, Holy Week, Advent and the Christmas season. Our ANZAC service to commemorate The Fallen is remarkably well attended by both parishioners and the wider community. 6

Children, Youth and Young Adult Ministries Kids' Church Kids' Church happens every Sunday during term time during the 9.30am service, organised and run by the paid ten hours per week Children's Ministry Leader (currently recruiting). Children are between the ages of 5-11 years old but some preschool children join in as well with supervision from a parent. There are around 10-12 children who regularly attend this programme. The programme finishes in time for the children to join their parents for Communion. Each week two children assist in the Eucharists, by carrying a basket to collect the grape juice glasses. During the year, some Sunday 9.30am services are aimed at including the children, with songs, a story, or activities for them to do in the pews. In February 2021, there was a “Blessing of the backpacks” for children and students starting the new school year and on Christmas Eve there is a special child-focussed service at 4pm. 9
Mainly Music This outreach ministry for the wider community is organised and run by the Children's Ministry Leader (currently by parent volunteers) and supported by a group of retired parishioners who serve morning tea. This is held on Wednesday mornings during term time, and consists of half singing, dancing and a “Surprise Box”, and half morning tea, craft activities and free play in the Hall afterwards. Youth Group The Youth programmes are run by the paid 20 hour per week Youth Pastor who is responsible for the planning and delivery of Sunday Youth Group (during the 9.30am service) and also a social programme on a Friday evening. The youth programme is aimed at ages 11-18 year olds and has approximately 10-12 regular attendees. They are well connected to the wider Diocese and participate in events such as E-fest and Diowhodunnit. There have been three students who have participated in the BOLD leadership programme in recent years. There are members of the Youth Group who are involved in other ministries in the parish, such as Choir, Servers and even Pins and Needles. The Youth Group also help with fundraising events such as the Annual Garage Sale and Quiz Nights. Young Adults Group The Youth Pastor also leads a Young Adults Group which meets regularly for Bible study, discussions and periodic social activities. 10

Our Buildings The Church St Aidan's is a beautiful Church, dated to 1905, located on the corner of Ascot Avenue and Remuera Road, Remuera. The traditional wooden building with its stunning stained glass windows makes it one of the most beautiful parish churches in Auckland. The ‘Bunker’ is in the basement of the church, which is where the youth group meeting on a Sunday morning for their programme. The ‘Gathering Area’ is a modern addition to the church, which connects the church with the hall complexes. This welcoming space hosts numerous parish activities, such as serving morning tea after each Sunday morning service, a meeting space for the Lenten studies and home groups, youth group dinners and our Pins and Needles group. The annual Pet Service is also held in the Gathering Area. It can be used as an overflow for large funeral services, with sound and video able to be projected into it. There is a well-resourced library, which is well used within the parish. The Hall, Social Lounge and Offices This is a multipurpose facility, comprising a large Hall (with a stage area and an attached kitchen), a Mission Shop, a Social Lounge (and attached kitchenette), an administrative office downstairs and offices and a meeting space upstairs. The Hall is used for many parish events such as the Annual Garage Sale, St Aidan’s Day lunch, the Annual Quiz Night and our weekly Mainly Music group. The Hall and Social Lounge are hired by many community groups for dancing, martial arts etc. and this is a significant source of income for the parish. Significant Building Project The parish has identified the need to improve and renovate the hall, social lounge, administration and related facilities areas of the St Aidan's property. A sub-group of Vestry has established the background context and objectives for these improvements and an architect has been briefed. The purpose of the work with the architect is to develop an overarching plan for these areas. Wider parish consultation in the near future will be required as part of the development of the plan. Once the overarching plan is in place, it will be broken down and sequenced into short to medium to longer term projects. This work is expected to gather momentum in 2021 and beyond. 12
Top left: Hall, Top right:Social Lounge, Bottom left: Vicarage lounge/dining room, Bottom right: Vicarage exterior The Vicarage The Vicarage is a generous family home, purpose-built in the early 1990s, located directly across the road from the church at 6 Ascot Avenue. The ground floor comprises a large study, a lounge/dining room, an open plan family room and kitchen, with a fenced outdoor courtyard and mature garden. Additionally, there is a large guest bedroom with ensuite, laundry with toilet and a double garage. Upstairs there are four good-sized bedrooms (master has an ensuite) and a shared bathroom. There are built-in wardrobes and storage in every bedroom. The church also owns the Curate’s house at 8 Ascot Avenue, which shares a driveway with the Vicarage. This either houses the Priest Assistant or is rented at market value, giving another source of income to the parish. Both buildings are currently being upgraded to comply with the ‘Healthy Homes’ requirements. 13
Our Local Community School Zones The Vicarage is in excellent school zones for children of all ages. Remuera Primary School is approximately 1km away and Remuera Intermediate School is a 5-minute walk away, straight down Ascot Avenue. Auckland Grammar School and Epsom Girls’ Grammar are within easy bus routes down Remuera Road. Other schools nearby are St Kentigern School for Girls, St Kentigern School for Boys, Kings School, and Baradene College. Remuera Village Remuera Shopping Centre is a short walk away, with a New World supermarket, the Remuera Library, and a convenient selection of amenities such as banks, pharmacies, grocers, restaurants, cafes, takeaways, and clothing, book, jewellery and gift shops. Transport Transport services in the area are excellent; the Greenlane motorway on and off-ramps are a 5-minute drive to get you easily on the State Highway 1 motorway and there is a bus stop on Remuera Road near the rear church driveway, with regular buses using the route. Newmarket and the City Centre are a convenient bus journey or short drive away. A choice of three railway stations are close by, with access to Eastern and Southern railway lines. 14
Population Remuera is an affluent inner city suburb of Auckland, New Zealand. It is located four kilometres southeast of the city centre. The suburb has numerous green spaces, most obvious of which is Ōhinerau / Mount Hobson – a volcanic cone with views from the top overlooking Waitematā Harbour and Rangitoto. The suburb extends from Hobson Bay and the Orakei Basin on the Waitematā Harbour to the north and east, to the main thoroughfare of State Highway 1 in the southwest. It is surrounded by the suburbs of Orakei, Meadowbank, Saint Johns, Mount Wellington, Ellerslie, Greenlane, Epsom, Newmarket and Parnell. Our History St Aidan’s, Remuera has been an independent ministry unit since 1912 when a parochial district was formed from the mother parish of St Mark, Remuera. It was given parish status as early as 1915. Originally, St Mark’s parish was much bigger as its boundaries then included the area now covered by the parishes of St Mark, St Aidan, St George Epsom, and St Chad Meadowbank. The Remuera area develops As the population of Auckland grew, the weekend houses in Remuera began to be replaced by larger homes on large sections, giving it a semi-rural atmosphere. St Mark’s had purchased a section in Victoria Avenue for future development. Elsewhere in the parish a Mission Hall was built on Mr J Wilson’s property in Shore Road (now the site of St Kentigern’s School) and used from 1859 as a chapel for Hobson Bay-Lower Remuera area. Services also began in 1885 in the Remuera Social hall at the top of Ōrākei Road. St Aidan's Remuera However, the people of ‘Upper Remuera’ made their own plans and services began in a hall in 1898. In 1903 a section was purchased on the corner of Remuera and Ascot Avenue. St Aidan’s Church was dedicated on 29 June 1905. A resident priest was appointed in 1906. Significant alterations were carried out in 1910, and the sanctuary dedicated on 21 December 1912, and the church consecrated on 2 September 1956. Financial Reports Parish Finances: The annual accounts to 31 December 2020 are attached. They show net assets of $8.2 million, of which $7.8 million comprises mortgage-free land, buildings and contents at valuation, held by the General Trust Board and $0.28 million unallocated funds of the parish. The balance of net assets comprise special funds established in the past for ministry and property maintenance. In addition, St Aidan’s has an established Endowment Trust, incorporating previous bequest funds, and offering an opportunity for future bequests and donations. The Treasurer’s Report and a full set of the Parish Financial Statements for the year ended 31 December 2020 are annexed. Annexures 1. The Treasurers Report 2. Financial Statements for the year ended 31 December 2020 Parish of St Aidan’s, Remuera Treasurer’s report for the year ended 31 December 2020 I have pleasure in presenting my report on the Parish’s finances for 2020. Annual financial statements • Owing to COVID the Church was shut for 15 Sundays out of 52 Sunday (29%) and with a reduction in congregation during Alert level 2 services. • This had an impact on total income which was down by $77,000 compared with the previous year. The main items of reduction in income are - Offerings by ($26,000) (9.5%), Hall Hire ($27,000), Weddings ($7,000) and bequest ($20,000). • We were fortunate to have received a Government COVID Wage subsidy of $22,000. • However, because of the shut down our expenses were less by $24,000 compared to the previous year. We also received a contribution of $14,000 from the Diocese towards clergy salaries. • In spite of a very difficult year, we had a small surplus of $22,923 before depreciation. • The Church is in a Financially healthy position with Cash in Bank of $70,000 as at March 2021 and with 10 Term Deposits totalling $363,000. 21
