GREETINGS FROM THE COAST! Wow! Just like you experienced, COVID-19 brought everything to a halt and brought much uncertainty and much change to our lives in the last few months. The coronavirus is even the reason this edition of the Selah is a digital-only version. Who would have expected this kind of 75th anniversary year? As I write this, March, April and May have been months without guests due to the pandemic. At least half of June will be the same. As we wait for guidelines from our state and local leaders, we are assessing how significant the impact will be on our summer conferences. What a crazy time we are all living through. Even with all the uncertainty, we have great hope. Our hope is strong because it is rooted and anchored in God’s faithfulness. This expectation is for each of us personally as well as for the continuing ministry the Lord will do at the conference center in year seventy-five and beyond. This hope buoys our expectations for what the summer holds for all of us: guests, speakers, worship leaders, staff, volunteers—everyone. At this point we don’t know all the guidelines that our state and local leaders will enact. We know there will be some changes in what our summer conferences will look like; however, they will be temporary, and we have full confidence of the Lord doing great things in and among us as we gather. We will be strengthened by His Word, refreshed in worship, encouraged by fellowship with other believers and renewed in this beautiful coastal setting. So, with that strong confidence, please pray with us as we trust the Lord for great days ahead. Pray with us for provision for our needs, for protection from illness, for wisdom for our planning and for God’s sweet presence here as we gather for conferences. And we will continue praying for the Lord’s blessing on each of you. In His grace and service, Marc Hagman Executive Director PS: Stay up to date by checking our website and our social media. 2
KITCHEN/DINING ROOM PROJECT UPDATE As you undoubtedly know, due to overwhelmingly generous support, last September we were able to move immediately into the second and final phase of the Kitchen & Dining Complex construction. In the months since then we have demolished the old building, prepared the site, installed geopiers, built temporary restrooms, re-routed utilities and poured the concrete slab for Phase Two. Framing and close-in over the next several months would be the next step. With the financial impact and the uncertainty caused by the COVID-19 pandemic along with the inability to have volunteers, we have temporarily paused the work on the project. This was done with the approval of the Board of Directors. Since we had no guests for over two months, this is a wise and prudent move. Before this postponement we finished all of the primary concrete work (slab, porches, ADA ramp, steps), which positions us for a quick restart when things get back to normal as well as potentially doing some incremental framing work if circumstances allow. 3
We currently have two hundred thousand dollars in the K-DR account after the work that has been done and approved. We still need about $800,000 to finish the project, but the current money could see us to the close- in of Phase Two. We have also received encouragement from the M.J. Murdock Trust to apply for another grant to finish the building. Unfortunately, if circumstances become too dire this summer, some of those unrestricted funds might be needed for operational survival. We will post further updates on our website and Facebook as things unfold, but we wanted you to know where we stand in a little more detail. If you see your way clear to make an additional gift for the building project, those funds would help us ramp up construction more quickly when the time is right this summer or fall. This is a highly unusual time as we all know. What seems unclear to us is clear to God, and we have confidence in our Father who cares for us and knows the end from the beginning. Our project will be completed, but in God’s timing, not ours. 4

LENGTH OF SERVICE AWARD Proverbs 22:29 says, “Do you see a man skilled in his work? He will serve before kings…” This verse perfectly applies to Dale Thompson, our IT Administrator. In 2020, Dale will celebrate fifteen years of service. Every staff member and conference center guest has been blessed by Dale’s amazing knowledge of technology and his heart to offer his service to the King of Kings. Born in Oxford, England in 1961, Dale was just six months old when he came back with his parents to the United States. Dale’s father was from the Seattle area but had been stationed at an Air Force base in England when he met Dale’s English mother. Growing up, Dale remembers moving constantly until the family finally settled in Bremerton, Washington when Dale was fifteen. While earning his Computer Science degree at Western Washington University, Dale worked part-time at the Naval Undersea Warfare Center where he had his first opportunity to write computer programs. After graduating, he worked for the Naval station, King County Metro Transit and Immunex Corporation as a Database Administrator and Computer Programmer. In 1990, Dale was leading a Bible study when he met his wife Cassie. Cassie would cook meals for some of the Bible study attendees each week. Dale found himself staying after the study to talk to Cassie and he got to know Cassie and her two youngest daughters Mary and Elizabeth very well. The couple were married in October 1992. When Dale and Cassie met, Cassie had six children with two living at home. They now have twenty-seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren! During their first year of marriage, Cassie heard a radio ad for Cannon Beach Conference Center and requested a brochure. Dale immediately recognized some of the speakers listed on the brochure that he was interested in hearing. Taking Mary and Elizabeth with them, they attended their first conference. Dale remembers how impacting their time at CBCC was and how much they felt drawn to the ministry. 9
“During our first stay here, I distinctly recall spying a computer monitor through an admin building window and the strong thought came to me that I would really like to work in a place like this,” recalls Dale. After coming to summer conferences every year for five years, Dale and Cassie became CBCC volunteers. “Cassie is a very skilled seamstress and she really wanted to volunteer her skills to help out CBCC. She was asked to come down for about ten days to sew. I followed her down to the coast a few days later and was easily persuaded that I could help out by utilizing my IT skills. My first project was developing software for the Volunteer Coordinator to manage and schedule volunteers. In 1999, I took on a bigger project of writing a new Mailing List and Donor database system.” In 2002, Dale began creating a new reservation system. Still volunteering, he made roughly twenty trips to the conference center each year. Over time, he realized that Cannon Beach was beginning to feel like “home.” When an IT position opened in 2005, Dale recognized the opportunity to answer the call he had felt years earlier. Still, he had some trepidation about leaving his comfortable government career. He happened to come across a verse in Luke: “And now Jesus said to Simon, ‘Do not be afraid; from now on you will be catching men.’ And when they had brought their boats to land, they left everything and followed him.” Trusting God, Dale made the decision to join the staff of CBCC in a full-time IT administrator role. In his role, Dale is responsible for all of CBCC’s networks and wifi hotspots. He also manages the corporate e-mail system, database servers, and computer workstations. What he enjoys most is writing software. His recent projects have included HR and employee scheduling software and the online CBCC Speaker Library. “My main role is helping the staff succeed at their roles. When our staff can count on the computers and data systems they use to efficiently and accurately provide the information they need to serve our guests and accomplish our mission, then I have succeeded at my job.” In his extra time, one of Dale’s passions is to study theology and history. Lately, he’s been conducting genealogical and DNA research to solve some family mysteries. Among his discoveries, he determined that his mother’s father was Jewish. Dale continues to lead Bible studies and teach Sunday school. He’s even had the opportunity to be a song leader at his church. Cannon Beach Conference Center is greatly appreciative of Dale and Cassie Thompson’s longtime support of the ministry, both as volunteers and staff. We celebrate Dale’s fifteen years of service unto the King! 10
SUPPORTING THE CONFERENCE CENTER DURING THIS PANDEMIC As we all know, this is an unusual and challenging time in our nation and for the many ministries God has raised up to share the Gospel and bring hope to a lost and broken world. Some ministries have weathered the storm better than others for various reasons. We rely on having guests to stay open. For the past three months, we have had no guests and no guest income. We anticipate being able to hold summer conferences, but still face uncertainty regarding the overall impact. Thankfully, through the wisdom of our Board and staff, some reserve funds had been set aside for emergencies. However, these were never intended to carry us through several months without guest income. And, of course, major cuts to operational expenses have been instituted. We are grateful beyond words that many of our friends have stepped in and given generously to help us weather this time without fatal financial damage. However, as the pandemic continues, those funds are now disappearing. If you can make a recurring or one-time generous donation you will be joining us during a critical time for this ministry.
