Readings Reflection From the Pastor/Rector Brothers & Sisters, With today’s great Solemnity of Pentecost, we have completed our journey throughout the Easter Season. Today we mystically commemorate the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the Twelve, an event that transformed them from being simple disciples of Jesus Christ and into Apostles. No longer were they only those who learned about the Kingdom of Heaven at the feet of the Son of God, but now they were those sent (the Greek word that gives us apostle means “to send”) to preach the Gospel, the Good News of the Kingdom. Prior to Pentecost, they had been instructed to stay in Jerusalem, but with the coming of the Spirit, they were sent to preach in Jerusalem, Judea, and ultimately the whole world. This year, Pentecost is for us what it was for the Apostles. Pentecost corresponds roughly to that time when we, who have been ordered to stay in our homes, can begin to go out into the world again. Through this time of challenge, of not knowing when and how we were going to encounter the Risen Lord, we have had the chance to reflect on what the presence of Jesus Christ means and how we shape our lives to receive Him more completely. With Pentecost, we are challenged to go out and reintroduce the world to the God who made it. Therefore, as our parishes begin the process of reopening, we will call upon more volunteers to help with the diocesan and state required usher and cleaning/sanitizing duties. But even more importantly, we are calling upon you to go out and invite people to attend our outdoor masses. To have streaming parties, as so many have, in our parking lots – a kind of Holy Tailgating. You are necessary to preach the Gospel, and call the many who have fled back to the Churches. You have received the Holy Spirit. Do not be afraid, for behold Jesus Christ is with you, even unto the end of the age. Fr. Millar Welcome to the Heart of Peoria Catholic Community 5
