Money Optional Dear Family, 24 This week your child is learning to identify coins and their values and find the total value of groups of coins. quarter dime nickel penny 25¢ 10¢ 5¢ 1¢ When you count a group of coins, you can count coins with the greatest value first. Putting coins in order from the greatest to the least value is helpful. For example, to find the total value of 2 dimes and 3 pennies, count the dimes by tens first and then count on by ones to count the pennies. Counting the coins this way helps your child find the total value of the group of dimes and pennies. Find the value of 2 dimes and 3 pennies. Count by tens. Count on by ones. 10¢ 20¢ 21¢ 22¢ 23¢ When a group of coins has a value of 100 cents (¢), it is equal to one dollar. For example, a group of 100 pennies or 10 dimes is equal to one dollar. Invite your child to share what he or she knows about coins and about counting groups of coins by doing the dollar ($) following activity together. ©Curriculum Associates, LLC Copying is not permitted. Activity Exploring Coins Do this activity with your child to explore money. Materials 2 quarters, 3 dimes, 3 nickels, 5 pennies Help your child practice recognizing and counting coins. Have your child sort the coins by their values. Ask your child to name one of each coin and tell its value in cents. Your child should look at the pictures on both sides of each coin to help identify it. Next, help your child practice counting the dimes and pennies to find their total value. Your child should put the coins in a row, count the dimes by tens first, and count on by ones to count the pennies. It may help your child to count aloud. For example: Start: 10¢, 20¢, 30¢ Count on: 31¢, 32¢, 33¢, 34¢, 35¢ • Make a different group with only dimes and pennies. • Put the dimes and pennies in a row, with dimes first and then pennies. • Count to find the total value of the dimes and pennies. Look for other opportunities to practice recognizing coins and counting groups of dimes and pennies (up to 1 dollar) with your child. 538 Lesson 24 Money ©Curriculum Associates, LLC Copying is not permitted.

Dear Westside families, Given our current situation, it is very normal that our kids may be struggling with many worries. Often, our children’s worries may come out in outbursts or tantrums because they are still figuring out how to express their emotions as well as may be struggling with understanding how they feel. I’ve included a link to a Read Aloud that may be helpful for your kids. The story I am reading in the link is ‘Ruby Finds a Worry’. It’s a sweet story about the importance of talking about our worries. https://youtu.be/9-nwfQ_aQ7A Mindfulness Moment: Tree Breaths Standing up, take a deep breath in through your nose. Slowly let the breath out and imagine you are a tree, standing tall in a forest. Try to make your legs feel like a strong tree trunk, that is rooted into the ground. As you take another deep breath in, raise your arms to look like tree branches. As you stand tall, with your arms up in the air, imagine the wind blowing. Does your tree stay still, or does it start to sway in the wind. Continue stretching your arms up into the sky, imagining your branches growing. Try to feel the warmth from the sun shining down on you. Continue taking deep slow breaths, in and out. Slowly lower your tree branch arms down to your sides, relax your stance and take one more deep breath in through your nose and slowly let it out through your mouth.
