September Events Mary MacKillop Precinct Mystics Series 5: Mystical Poets including Rumi, Gerard Manley Hopkins, Mary Oliver and David Whyte Hopkins was a Jesuit priest whose poetry was not published until after his death. It broke the rules of poetry and left us with some of the most memorable lines ever: The world is charged with the grandeur of God, it will flame out, like shining from shook foil… Hopkins saw the essence of God in all that God has made and the language of his poetry draws us into the same intimacy. Over 600 years before Hopkins, Rumi a Persian poet, Islamic scholar, theologian and Sufi mystic drew his followers into a Divine Dance where finding and being found by the Beloved is the soul’s purpose. Rumi crosses all cultural and faith divides with his language of love. Even if you think poetry is not for you, I invite you to meet our mystical poets and see the world as they described it. Mary MacKillop Precinct Meet our 2021 Presenters ... Wayne Brabin is a member of the Ignatian Heart Spirituality team, a trained spiritual director, giver of the spiritual exercises, an experienced retreat guide and has an extensive human resource and human development background. His particular interests are in offering spiritual formation and leadership support to those working in education and parishes and in adapting the Spiritual Exercises in all forms. Mary Cresp rsj is a Sister of St Joseph, born in Berri, South Australia. She ministered in primary and secondary schools, in parishes and as lecturer/tutor at St Francis Xavier’s Seminary (Adelaide College of Divinity) before being elected Congregational Leader for the Sisters of St Joseph in 1989. Since then she has been Executive Director of the Conference of Australian Religious, Congregational Leader for the Sisters of Perpetual Adoration, and has authored a number of books and articles on spirituality and history. Mary continues to write and to give Spiritual Direction, retreats and staff days. Val DeBrenni, a Covenant Josephite, is a trained spiritual director and supervisor. She is the Director of the Spiritual Director Formation Program for the Catholic Archdiocese of Adelaide and a member of the a member of the Ignatian Heart Spirituality Team, Val has a special interest in the spiritual formation of teachers and leaders in Catholic schools. Angela Hazebroek is a member of the Ignatian Heart Spirituality Team and a giver of the Spiritual Exercises and Spiritual Direction, face-to-face and via technology. Angela offers monthly reflections, retreats and a course on the mystics. Her practice is based on the interconnectedness of all beings and our call to be co-creators with Love in an awesome evolving cosmos. Angela is married with two adult daughters and four grandchildren . Susan Pollard rsj is a Jungian analyst, clinical psychologist and a training analyst with the Australian and New Zealand Society of Jungian Analysts. She has a theological, teaching and educational administration background and has lived in Australia, Africa and Europe. From 1991 to 2000, Susan was a training candidate at the C.G. Jung Institute Zurich from where she graduated in July 2000. Her doctorate in analytical psychology is from the Union University and Institute, Cincinnati, Ohio. She is in private practice in South Australia and has offered a number of workshops in Australia and overseas. Mary Ryan rsj is the Director of Mary MacKillop Precinct. She has spent many years working in the areas of primary and secondary education, adult and young adult spirituality and also in leadership roles. In recent years, Mary has co-ordinated the establishment of Mary MacKillop Precinct, the redevelopment of Mary MacKillop Museum and the creation of the Kensington-Norwood Mary MacKillop Walk. A keen photographer, she is inspired daily by her hero, Saint Mary of the Cross MacKillop. Michael Trainor is priest of the parish of Lockleys and senior lecturer in biblical studies with the Australian Catholic University. Mary MacKillop Precinct Mary MacKillop Precinct has a special place in the South Australian story. It is situated within the grounds of St Joseph’s Convent, Kensington, South Australia, the Josephites’ first permanent Mother House which was established by Mary MacKillop in 1872. It is here that she lived, prayed and worked until 1883 It is a place of pilgrimage, hospitality, spirituality, education - and inspiration! St Joseph’s Chapel Mary’s much-loved place of prayer. Now heritage-listed, it has become a place of pilgrimage, prayer and peace for people of all ages and backgrounds.
