ST. PATRICK CATHOLIC CHURCH TROY, OHIO Twelveth Sunday in Ordinary Time June 20, 2021 BE NOT AFRAID Reflection on Mark 4:35-41 “What’s the point of being Christian if you don’t also know that what God withholds in the way of protection, He more than supplies in the form of support.” These words, from the great preacher, William Sloane Coffin, help me remember not to expect a pain-free, storm-free life. Sometimes we can fall into the trap of seeing the difficulties of life as punishments, or as proof that we aren’t pious enough. Nothing could be further from the truth of living in God’s presence. WEEKLY SCRIPTURE When we belong to Christ, we follow Him in the pattern of His life, suffering, death and Sunday, June 20 Resurrection – the Paschal Mystery. Storms will come. We will get tossed about by them. 12th Sunday in Ordinary Time We may even fall overboard. But in all of life’s difficulties, we have a God who, in Christ, Jb 38:1, 8-11 suffers with us. In the God who walks with us, intimately, through all the darknesses, Ps 107:23-26, 28-29, 30-31 pains, and tragedies life will offer, we have all the support that heaven can provide. Be 2 Cor 5:14-17 not afraid. Mk 4:35-41 ~ Fr. Jay Monday, June 21 St. Aloysius Gonzaga, Religious THE NATIVITY OF Gn 12:1-9 SAINT JOHN THE Ps 33:12-13, 18-19, 20 and 22 Mt 7:1-5 BAPTIST Feast Day: June 24 • Patron Saint of Baptism Tuesday, June 22 Weekday John spent his time in the desert, Gn 13:2, 5-18 an ascetic. He began to announce Ps 15:2-3a, 3bc-4ab, 5 the coming of the Kingdom, and Mt 7:6, 12-14 to call everyone to a fundamental reformation of life. His purpose Wednesday, June 23 was to prepare the way for Weekday Jesus. His baptism, he said, was Gn 15:1-12, 17-18 for repentance. But one would Ps 105:1-2, 3-4, 6-7, 8-9 come who would baptize with Mt 7:15-20 the Holy Spirit and fire. John was not worthy even to untie Thursday, June 24 his sandals. His attitude toward The Nativity of Jesus was: “He must increase; I St. John the Baptist must decrease” (John 3:30). Is 49:1-6 The greatness of John, his pivotal place in the history of salvation, is seen in the great Ps 139:1b-3, 13-14ab, 14c-15 emphasis Luke gives to the announcement of his birth and the event itself—both Acts 13:22-26 made prominently parallel to the same occurrences in the life of Jesus. John attracted Lk 1:57-66, 80 countless people to the banks of the Jordan, and it occurred to some people that he might be the Messiah. But he constantly deferred to Jesus, even to sending away some Friday, June 25 of his followers to become the first disciples of Jesus. Weekday Gn 17:1, 9-10, 15-22 Perhaps John’s idea of the coming of the Kingdom of God was not being perfectly fulfilled Ps 128:1-2, 3, 4-5 in the public ministry of Jesus. For whatever reason, when he was in prison he sent his Mt 8:1-4 disciples to ask Jesus if he was the Messiah. Jesus’ answer showed that the Messiah was to be a figure like that of the Suffering Servant in Isaiah. John himself would share in Saturday, June 26 the pattern of messianic suffering, losing his life to the revenge of Herodias. Weekday John challenges us Christians to the fundamental attitude of Christianity – total Gn 18:1-15 dependence on the Father, in Christ. Except for the Mother of God, no one had a higher Luke 1:46-50 and 53, 54-55 function in the unfolding of salvation. Yet the least in the kingdom, Jesus said, is greater Mt 8:5-17 than he, for the pure gift that the Father gives. The attractiveness as well as the austerity Access Daily Readings from of John, his fierce courage in denouncing evil – all stem from his fundamental and total the New American Bible, Revised Edition placing of his life within the will of God.
