THE CHURCH AT WORSHIP January 10, 2021 - Baptism of the Lord WE GATHER IN THE PRESENCE OF GOD *Please Stand in Body or in Spirit Thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore, my beloved, be steadfast, immovable, always excelling in the work of the Lord, because you know that in the Lord your labor is not in vain. (1 Corinthians 15:57-58) Prelude Medley by Nicole Pesce & Suzanne Lansford “Spirit of the Living God” Music Daniel Iverson Text Iverson/Alexander Arr: Pesce/Lansford Spirit of the living God, Fall afresh on me (repeat) Melt me, mold me, fill me, use me, Spirit of the living God, Fall afresh on me. “Blest Be the Tie that Binds Our Hearts” Naegeli/Fawcett Arr. Pesce/Lansford Blest be the tie that binds our hearts in Christian love. The fellowship of kindred minds is like to that above. Before our Father’s throne we pour our ardent prayers; Our fears, our hopes, our aims are one; our comforts and our cares. We share each other’s woes, our mutual burdens bear; And often for each other flows the sympathizing tear. When we asunder part, it gives us inward pain; But we shall still be joined in heart, and hope to meet again. Welcome and Announcements Rev. Mike Campbell (Please fill in the yellow attendance slip enclosed in your bulletin and place it in the offering plate) Opening Prayer Rev. Sheryl Campbell Spirit of the living God, we praise You for the gift to claim membership in the body of Christ, a gift received through the fullness of Your grace. Remind us that we are all members of the one body and if one member suffers, we all suffer. If one member rejoices, we all rejoice. May we, as the body of Christ in this place, be the best evidence of Your love by following You in the Way, the Truth, and the Life. We pray this in Jesus’ name. Amen. 2
*Call to Worship (Responsive) In one Spirit we were all baptized into one body. The body does not consist of one member but of many. If one member suffers, all suffer together with it; If one member is honored, all rejoice together with it. We are the body of Christ and individually members of it. Baptized by the Spirit, today we are reminded of our membership in the body of Christ. *Hymn “Baptized in Water” #492, Blue Hymnal Baptized in water, Sealed by the Spirit, Cleansed by the blood of Christ, our King; Heirs of salvation, Trusting the promise, Faithfully now God's praises we sing. Baptized in water, Sealed by the Spirit, Dead in the tomb with Christ, our King; One with His rising, Freed and forgiven, Thankfully now God's praises we sing. Baptized in water, Sealed by the Spirit, Marked with the sign of Christ, our King; Born of the Spirit, We are God's children, Joyfully now God's praises we sing. WE HEAR GOD’S WORD Prayer of Illumination Rev. Mike Campbell Loving God, fountain of every blessing, open us to Your life-giving Word, and fill us with Your Holy Spirit so that living water may flow through our hearts. May the living water be a spring of hope for a thirsty world. Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. 3
Reading from the Gospel Mark 1: 4-11 Page #32 This is The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Prayer of Confession (Responsive) Rev. Sheryl Campbell We acknowledge with gratitude, O God, that one of the major marks of Jesus' ministry was his servanthood. Empowered with Your Spirit at His baptism, Jesus radiated Your glory through His acts of love and justice and mercy. In baptism our lives are graced with the Holy Spirit to empower our ministry and mission as servants. Therefore, one of the major marks of our witness is servanthood. We confess that there are times when we are not mindful of serving others in Jesus' name. Merciful God, forgive our capacity to forget that Jesus did not come to be served but to serve, and our reluctance to respond as He did, even when we do remember. Jesus did not use His power to dominate others but to perform acts of humble and caring service in ways that enabled people to experience the nearness of God's presence. We confess that there are times when our identity as God's beloved becomes difficult to recognize. Merciful God, remind us that Your love is made most evident through gentle and persistent acts of grace, kindness, compassion, justice and mercy. Jesus' love for others was like a light which pierced the darkness and despair which clouded people's lives, to bring hope and the promise of a new and transformed future. We confess that there are times when we fail to lighten people's darkness or to ease their burden of despair and hopelessness. Merciful God, forgive our reluctance to get involved in other people's pain and problems; forgive the times when we doubt that we really can make a difference. Strengthen us with Your Spirit to discern the hopelessness and despair which imprisons people, and empower us to respond with sensitivity and determination to their needs, both here in our local community and beyond. This we pray in Jesus' name. Amen. 4
Assurance of Forgiveness (Responsive) Hear the Good News: God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power and everyone who believes in Him receives forgiveness of sins through His name. Thanks be to God! *Gloria Patri “Glory Be to the Father” Avery and Marsh Glory be to the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, World without end. Amen. As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, World without end. Amen. Amen. Amen. Amen. Amen. Amen. Amen. Amen. Service of Ordination and Installation Today we recognize and affirm the diverse gifts of our members. There are different gifts, But it is the same Spirit who gives them. There are different ways of serving God, But it is the same Lord who is served. Each one is given gifts by the Spirit, to use for the common good. Together we are the body of Christ, and individually members of Him. Presentation of Deacons and Elders Paul Willemssen, Clerk of Session Renewal of Baptismal Vows (Congregation) Let us all join together in professing the Christian faith as contained in the Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments: Do you believe in God the Father? I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth. Do you believe in Jesus Christ? I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord, Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, Born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day He rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. 5
Do you believe in the Holy Spirit? I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Ordination “In ordination the church sets apart with prayer and the laying on of hands those who have been called through election by the church to serve as Deacons, Elders and Ministers of Word and Sacrament.” (Book of Order) Ordination as Elder Barbara Benson Installation “In Installation the church sets apart with prayer Deacons and Elders elected by the congregation to serve a first or second term of office as well as those who have served in the past in this or other Presbyterian Churches and who are called again to service in a particular office.” Questions for the Deacons and Elders to be Installed The Vows of the Congregation Paul Willemssen "Do we the members of the church, accept these persons as Elders and Deacons, chosen by God through the voice of this congregation to lead us in the way of Christ?" We do. "Do we agree to encourage them, to respect their decisions, and to follow as they guide us, serving Jesus Christ, who alone is the head of the Church?" We do. Let us affirm their Installation as Elders and Deacons serving new terms: We gather in celebration of the joy that is ours to be partners with you in the service of Jesus Christ. We promise to love you, honor your leadership, and assist you that together we may be a faithful church of Jesus Christ. 6
Prayer Rev. Mike Campbell *Hymn “I Was There to Hear Your Borning Cry” John Ylvisaker I was there to hear your borning cry, I’ll be there when you are old. I rejoiced the day you were baptized, To see your life unfold. I was there when you were but a child, With a faith to suit you well; In a blaze of light you wandered off To find where demons dwell. When you heard the wonder of the Word I was there to cheer you on; You were raised to praise the living Lord, To whom you now belong. If you find someone to share your time And you join your hearts as one, I’ll be there to make your verses rhyme From dusk till rising sun. In the middle ages of your life, Not too old, no longer young, I’ll be there to guide you through the night, Complete what I’ve begun. When the evening gently closes in And you shut your weary eyes, I’ll be there as I have always been With just one more surprise. I was there to hear your borning cry, I’ll be there when you are old. I rejoiced the day you were baptized, To see your life unfold. Sermon “There Is a Time to be Born—Again” Rev. Mike Campbell Pastoral Prayer 7
The Lord’s Prayer Our Father, Who art in Heaven. Hallowed be Thy Name. Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done On earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen. WE RESPOND WITH THANKSGIVING Offering to the Lord Offertory “They’ll Know We Are Christians By Our Love” Nicole Pesce, Piano; Suzanne Lansford, Violin We are one in the Spirit; we are one in the Lord (repeat).
