SAINT WILLIAM CATHOLIC CHURCH / OUR LADY OF GRACE CATHOLIC CHURCH FORT LUPTON, CO Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church Wa t t e n b e r g, C o l o r a d o 8 0 6 2 1 Some History of Our Lady of Grace Church This history of Our Lady of Grace Church coincides with the migration of the Hispanic people into Wattenberg in the 1920’s. Since all the residents were Catholic, they were concerned about having mass in Wattenberg and they accomplished this by arranging to have Father Joseph P. Trudell, S.S., a priest from Mercy Hospital in Denver, CO to come celebrate mass for the community. Since there was no church in the community, mass was held in a small building called the Morada. The second priority of the Hispanic community was to have a church and when a building which housed a pea factory was closed and abandoned, members of the community and Father Trudell met with the owner to have this purchased and converted to a church. The owner graciously donated the building and the surrounding land to the town and that is how Our Lady of Grace began. Through fund raising activities and donations of money and goods, the community has been able to remodel and improve the church. As other churches who have closed or upgraded their churches, Wattenberg has been able to acquire many beautiful things… The Stations of the Cross from St. Leo’s Church in Denver; the pews from Regis College; the statues of Joseph and Mary from St. Anthony’s Church in Sterling; the Altar from St. Benedict’s Monastery in Snowmass; the stained glass window (Northwest wall) from St. Augustine’s Church in Brighton; the podium donated by the Knights of Columbus in Brighton; and the Holy Water font from a church in Colorado Springs. Thank you Becky Pino for sharing this history with us!

The Baptism of the Lord 1/12/20 PRO-LIFE DISCUSSION The film is called, “The Two Popes” and it begins in April of 2005 when, following the death of Pope John Paul II, Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio, the then Archbishop of Buenos Aires, was summoned to Vatican City to participate in the election of a new Pope. German Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger was elected Pope and became Pope Benedict XVI. Seven years later, the Catholic Church found itself embroiled in what became known as the „Vatican leaks scandal.‟ While Pope Benedict‟s tenure became tainted by the accusations about his role in the scandal, there was a parallel controversy about the Church's handling of scandals involving pedophile priests, especially the case of Peter Hullermann. Cardinal Ratzinger had personally handled the Hullermann case in which the offending priest was transferred to a different parish where he continued his abuse of children. In the midst of these controversies, Pope Benedict requested that Cardinal Bergoglio, who was second in the 2005 conclave voting for Pope, to visit him. During this controversial time for the Church, Cardinal Bergoglio contemplated resigning from his position as Archbishop but could not get Pope Benedict to answer any of his letters requesting a meeting to discuss the matter. He took the initiative to personally deliver his resignation letter, but before he could arrange his travels to Rome he received a letter from Pope Benedict inviting him to come to the Vatican. Bergoglio accepted the timely invitation and met Pope Benedict at the Pope's summer residence, the Palace of Castel Gandolfo. During their initial conversation in the garden at the Palace, the two had an interesting but intense theological debate over the role of God and the role of the Church in today‟s world. Interspersed within the theology debate, Cardinal Bergoglio tried to persuade the Pope to accept his letter of resignation, but Benedict continually and angrily rejected the idea. Benedict argued the acceptance of Bergoglio‟s resignation would appear as a protest and a vote of no confidence in his leadership as Pope and would simultaneously weaken the Catholic Church. Despite their strong theological and personal differences, Pope Benedict asked Bergolio to remain at the palace for dinner. As was his custom and preference, Pope Benedict dined alone. After their separate dinners, Bergoglio was invited to join Benedict. The two had a pleasant informal chat, and slowly began to become comfortable with each other and their differences. Bergoglio talked about his early life and why he decided to become a priest. Benedict played the piano and shared a story of recording his album in the same studio where he was told the Beatles recorded their music. Bergoglio asked, “You went to Abbey Road?” (where the Beatles recorded) Pope Benedict replied, “No. That would not have been appropriate.” Bergoglio also mentioned the Beatles‟ song, “Eleanor Rigby.” Pope Benedict responded, “Who? I don‟t know her.” They even watched Benedict‟s favorite show, „Kommisar Rex‟ on television together, while sharing more personal stories, including a few jokes. All the while Benedict still refused to accept Bergoglio‟s resignation letter. Pope Benedict was called back to Rome on church business the following day. He requested Bergoglio to join him. After the Pope‟s business had concluded, Benedict met with Bergoglio in the Sistine Chapel and, it was then that Benedict confided in Bergoglio about his intentions to resign the Papacy. Shocked, Bergoglio objected and argued for church tradition and continuity within the church. Benedict replied that he had changed his mind about tradition and saw change as essential. Benedict also commented that Bergoglio would likely become his successor. Bergoglio rejected that idea, and claimed that his perceived collaboration with the Argentine military dictatorship and his failure to protect his friends and confront the junta tainted his reputation. Bergoglio‟s memories of his own actions and inaction during the dictatorship continue to haunt him. He has never found reconciliation. Pope Benedict comforted Cardinal Bergoglio and gave him absolution. After this remarkable conversation, Benedict thought that he and Bergoglio should eat and relax. Bergolio humbly suggested that they share a pizza in the Room of Tears. It was in the Room of Tears where Pope Benedict admitted to Bergoglio he could not hear the word of God anymore and reaffirmed his wish to abdicate his Papacy. Bergoglio, in turn, comforted the Pope and offered him absolution. After what amounted to a confession, a substantial weight appeared to be lifted from Pope Benedict. The two emerged from the privacy of the Room of Tears only to find tourists touring the Sistine Chapel. The tourists were obviously excited to see the Pontiff. Surprisingly and almost with a conviction of calm relief, Pope Benedict walked out into the crowd, alone and unguarded, to greet the people and even take pictures with them. Before Bergoglio left for Argentina, Pope Benedict surprised him with a gift, The Beatles “Abbey Road” CD. Then the Pope and Cardinal Bergoglio performed an impromptu tango dance together. (the tango is compulsory for Argentineans, as is football.) One year later, Pope Benedict XVI delivered his resignation to the world. A few days after the Benedict‟s announcement, Cardinal Bergoglio was elected Benedict‟s successor in the 2013 Papal conclave and became Pope Francis. The developed friendship of the two Popes has continued. They met again and shared a pizza as they watched their home countries of Germany and Argentina compete in the 2014 FIFA World Cup Finals. “The Two Popes” is a 2019 biographical drama film based on the 2017 play „The Pope.‟ Anthony Hopkins portrays Pope Benedict XVI. Jonathan Pryce portrays Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio (later to become Pope Francis). The film is streaming on Netflix.
