Sunday, May 30, 2021 Page 3 A Message from fr. Jason Grisafi Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Three weeks ago I shared with you a new set of COVID protocols announced by the diocese. We know that in that time protocols have been changing in both New York State and the United States. Consequently, the diocese has also revised their guidelines. For that reason, I have another new set of protocols to announce to you today. With a single notable exception, these protocols are effective immediately: Adopting current CDC guidelines, fully vaccinated individuals are not required to wear masks nor maintain social distancing. Parishioners who desire to wear a mask may certainly do so. Parishes (and their staff and volunteers) are not to enforce mask and social distancing guidelines. Parishes will not ask people for proof of vaccination. The diocesan announcement noted this line from the current NY State protocols: “For areas where vaccination status of individuals is unknown and for patrons who do not present proof of full vaccination status, the required social distance of 6 feet still applies until more New Yorkers are fully vaccinated.” Since our parishes fall into this category, we do ask those coming to our church to be mindful of this guideline. "All practices such as taking temperatures, contract tracing, etc. should cease" though a reasonable exception can be made for our nursery school since they have additional state guidelines that they are required to follow. "Clergy and Extraordinary Ministers should continue to wear masks when distributing Holy Communion until further notice." "The general dispensation from the obligation to attend Sunday and Holy Days of Obligation Masses will end the weekend of Saturday/Sunday, August 14/15, 2021." Because of the moral importance of this change we will be announcing it multiple times in the coming months. We also ask parishioners to help spread the news by informing each other. This means that the normal obligation to attend Sunday and Holy Day Masses will be back in effect starting on Sunday, August 15th of this year. The continuing use and frequency of live-streamed Masses is under discussion by the priests. Sincerely, fr. Jason

Sunday, May 30, 2021 Page 5 Sacrificial Giving Thank you for your generosity in returning to God and God’s work some of what God has given to you. May 23, 2021 Collection: $10,277 Faith Direct: $5,000 Total: $15,277 * Weekly Budget: $20,000 Difference: ( - ) $4,723 *Note: We noticed that our calculation of our weekly goal was slightly off because it was based on 52 Sundays in the year. However, since Easter is always on a Sunday and is counted separately there was a need to adjust the goal from $19,615 to $20,000. We have seen a significant (approximately 25%) jump in electronic donations through Faith Direct. A big thanks to all who have switched to electronic giving, or increased their giving amount! If you would like to sign up for electronic giving, but need assistance, please call the parish office and we can help you sign up. *Please note there are issues with the delivery of our mail from the Post Office which contributes to the fluctuations in our weekly collections.* Our Parish also has the ability to accept on-line donations through a program known as FAITH DIRECT. It is a secure on line program which allows donations to electronically go to the Parish. You have the ability to adjust your settings for any amount or frequency. All details and even a video explaining FAITH DIRECT are on the website at: https://stjosephsbabylon.org/faith-direct If you have any questions, please give the office a call. Sunday, May 30, 2021 Page 9 Deacon’s Column Living the Trinity The crucifixion of Christ is a fact of history. It occurred on a particular day at a particular place. The Church calls that particular day “Good Friday”. The New Testament calls that particular place “Calvary”. The crucifixion of our Lord is a fact – something that actually occurred on the stage of human history. But it is more than that. It is a principle of life. It is a way of living. It is the symbol of a universal law that belongs to the spiritual realm just as surely as the law of gravity belongs to the physical realm. That law simply stated is this: No salvation is possible until someone who is not guilty assumes the burden of human guilt. That is what Jesus did on the cross. He was not responsible for the prejudice, the hatred, and the cruelty that corrupted the people and the institutions of that day. But he voluntarily took that burden upon himself and carried it to Calvary. Then his disciples began to see that part of that collective guilt belonged to them, and they could not escape the conclusion that Christ had died for their sins. And once that truth had been faced, they could not escape a sense of an unpayable indebtedness. And that sense of indebtedness began to find expression in the way that they lived. That, my friends, is what the cross should mean in your life and mine. It stands back there in history as a tragic and magnificent fact. But it also stands here in our midst as an inescapable indebtedness. If he paid that price for us, then how can we not be willing to pay that price for one another? On this Trinity Sunday, let us remind ourselves that we can share in the suffering of the Son. Our final thought is this: We can know the living presence of the Holy Spirit. For some reason, when most of us think about God, our minds become telescopic, and we start staring at the stars. Or they become historic, and we start looking at the past. Or they become prophetic, and we start dreaming of the future. All of these concepts of God are valid. He is up there in the stars. He is back there in the past. He is out there in the future. God is everywhere. But that broad generalization means very little to us as we struggle with the challenges of daily living. We need something more than that. We need what Jesus had in mind, when he said, “Know that I am with you always, until the end of the world.” If we think of God only as the Father in heaven, them he can seem a long way off. And if we think of him only as he was revealed in the life and death and resurrection of Jesus, then he can seem along way back. But if we also think of him as the Divine Spirit who lives within us, then God becomes the faithful friend who is always there. We can talk with him. We can get to know him in the everyday business of living. You and I may never be able to understand or explain the doctrine of the Trinity. But that limitation need not deprive us of its truth. We can do something better than explain it; we can live it. We can anchor our lives in the unfailing love of the Father. We can share in the sacrificial suffering of the Son. And we can know the living presence of the Holy Spirit. Live, Love, Learn Deacon Mike

Registration forms have been mailed to all the faith formation families. Please return your registration forms as soon as possible. We will resume classes in the building in the fall but families will have the option of working from home if it makes them feel more comfortable. Please check the back of the registration form for your options. Great news… the faith formation classes are being cleaned and painted! This past year had its challenges due to the pandemic and we understand that it was difficult for some families to work with their children at home. We took the opportunity to have the rooms cleaned and painted while they were empty. Thank you to all the families that contributed to the Faith Formation Program this year. We couldn’t have done this without your support. Registration for the 2020-2021 is still open for those who missed this year. Families have until the end of June to register for this year so that they can complete the work over the summer and not fall behind for next year. Level 8 Confirmation – Confirmation was celebrated last Tuesday and Thursday. Thank you to all the volunteers and staff that helped make these celebrations possible. The First Eucharist Masses have begun! We are so happy to celebrate the First Communion Masses this year but please don’t make this the last time you receive Communion this year. We hope to see you at Mass on the weekends again. Please pray for our First Communion children and their families. RESERVATIONS FOR MASS ARE NO LONGER NEEDED!!! Unit Reviews – there are 5 unit reviews for levels 1-6. Students need to answer the questions and return them to the Faith Formation Office either by emailing them to cmoule@stjbabylon.org or sending them via mail. You may also drop them off in the mailbox located outside the front door to the Parish Center. Monthly Reviews for levels 7 & 8 – please send your monthly reviews to the Faith Formation Office as you complete them. Monthly Mass Reflections and/or Mass attendance – the Mass reflection form can be found on the website: stjosephsbabylon.org, Faith Formation, Monthly Mass Reflection Form. Parents should be talking with their children about the Mass and what they learned from it and parents should fill out the reflection and submit it. If you wish to attend Mass in person, you can hand in a Mass attendance envelope in the collection basket instead of doing a Mass reflection. Attendance envelopes can be found in the back of the church and hall. Please ask an usher or greeter if you can’t find them. Our Confirmation Candidates have been doing some amazing community service projects! We will feature some of the best projects each week in the bulletin. Here are just a few great examples: Aidan and his family took a bike ride across town to drop off food and organize bins into categories (PB&J, pastas, soups, crackers and chips). Aidan also helped his cousin with his school work during the pandemic. James participated in food drives at his school, he wrote thank you letters to essential workers and he helped shovel snow. Caelie made cards for health care workers and nursing home patients. She said that the doctors have worked so hard to take care of COVID patients and they risked getting it themselves and nursing home patients may have been lonely because they couldn’t have visitors. She also helped her parents with the Cystic Fibrosis walk to help raise money to find a cure. Her brother has CF.

Though it continues to puzzle my family, the first thing I read in the morning is the obituaries. Being unable to acknowledge, support, and honor the dearly departed and their families was a continued disappointment to me, and while I responded by the written word, it simply was not the same as being there. I recently had what my children refer to as a “doubleheader” (two wakes in the same day). The early one was for a teaching colleague of 50 years ago, the second for a fellow bass in the group in which I sing. John had true musical talent (among his many) and was eager to share his expertise if asked. When I joined the group, I could not read music nor distinguish a sharp from a flat. As rehearsals continued, my limitations became obvious and bothersome to the others in my section. I remember distinctly after one of my truly awful attempts, John turned around and simply shook his head. That was all he did, but it was enough. I then began to work hard to master my responsibilities to the other members of the group. John was very encouraging during my renaissance of sorts, and he and I developed a special friendship. John recently passed away, and members of the group sang at his wake. Of course, I went to his funeral as well, where praises for the gentlemanly, supportive, and faithful life he lived resounded among those in attendance. After the recessional, his casket was on the sidewalk outside the church, draped with an American flag. After Taps, two servicemen slowly and honorably folded the flag and presented it to John’s loving widow. Though intended as a temporal token of appreciation from his country, this tradition spoke volumes of the Christlike life John had lived. It reflected service, loyalty, bravery, and the willingness to lay down his life for another. I was deeply moved. On this Memorial Day weekend, let us note in our hearts and in our actions those like John who put others before themselves.

Sunday, May 30, 2021 Page 15 Thank you ! Our most sincere thanks to our dear Fr. David Atanasio who led Outreach’s basement and Parish Center cleaning project. Fr. Dave is well known for his joy, kindness, and enthusiasm which energizes the team. What a wonderful experience to see youth and adults working together helping each other while having lots of fun. Let’s pray to the Lord to get our normal life back soon. A large dumpster was filled in less than three hours due to successful teamwork. This was possible thanks to the army of volunteers who once again came to the rescue. We would like to extend our special thanks to the students, parents, and teachers of St. John the Baptist High School as well as the Knights of Columbus, we always can count on them. Thank you to all our amazing volunteers. You are why we survive and thrive. I can do things you cannot, you can do things I cannot. Together we can do great things. ~Mother Teresa
