I'd like to welcome you all back to Church Lane this afternoon for what we know will be another difficult game against Stockport Town. They're a side who have had mixed results so far this season, but we've watched them a time or two and know that they have some talented players in their squad who will cause problems for anyone in this league. We know that we will have to be at our best to to get the win today and the players will be well aware of the need to perform this afternoon. Obviously Saturday's win over St Martins saw us take the top spot in the league table, it's great to be in that position but there is still such a long way to go in the season that we aren't reading too much into it at this point. We played well against St Martins but we did get the feeling that it may be one of those games that we have slipped up in in the past as we missed chance after chance. It has to be said that the St Martins goalkeeper performed magnificently well to keep his side in the game until the later stages. Once Teddy Osipitan scored a brilliant second goal for us then the result was in no doubt and Benito's late double gave the scoreline an accurate look in the end. Having mentioned Benito, he made his 50th appearance for the club in Saturday's game, captaining the side on the day. He's become a really valuable player to us since we came here, he's played in pretty much every position on the pitch, including goalkeeper, and done well in them all. He's settled in midfield at the moment a position where his strength and passing ability are ideally suited. I mentioned on Saturday that I was pleased to see that we were nearly back at full strength squad wise with the return of several players from injury. I was obviously tempting fate as Rick Tindall limped off with a groin injury just a minute after giving us the lead. Rick may be out for a while, we won't rush him back until he's ready to play. It's been a frustrating start for him, he joined us towards the end of pre-season and as such was a few weeks behind fitness wise. He did well in the pre-season games he played but then picked up an injury in the last training session before
the league opener at Cheadle. Having worked hard to get fit and finally get a start he's now really disappointed to have this set back. The only positive is that we do have other forward players in the squad so we do not need to rush out to try and bring in a replacement. Joe Bevan missed Saturday's game but should be back today and Sam Amankwaa is also nearing full fitness. Sam could well be in the squad today, he's a talented player and the way he plays he can be a real game changer. We were delighted to keep a clean sheet on Saturday, as good as our attacking play has been we have given away some disappointing goals this season so far. Mason Fallon is fit now and desperate to get back in the side, and Chris Rogers is the same. Chris started the season in the team and did well but then missed a game and is now having to be patient to get back in. We have competition for places and the lads in possession of the shirt know that they need to play well to keep it. There will be a few tired legs today after a game on Saturday so we will see how the lads feel when they arrive today before finalising the team. Stockport Town will be in the same boat of course having played against Ellesmere Rangers at weekend so there will be no advantage to either side. While we are top of the table at the moment we are not getting carried away, as I have said before, Norts and myself have been in the game for long enough to know that the league table in August can be very misleading. It will probably be October to November time before the table gives an accurate picture of how the league will develop, so cliched as it is we genuinely are taking it one game at a time. Enjoy the game
Many of our supporters will already be aware that the Bohemian Burger Bar has now opened at the club, running on Thursday and Saturday evenings from 5:00pm. Running in conjunction with the hugely popular Bohemian Bus in Disley, the opening burger events at Millers Bar have been hugely popular and very successful.
As mentioned in Saturday's programme, Joe Bevan scoring in his first four games for the club at the start of the season was something that had not been done in recent years. Wes Gibbons of course, pictured below scoring against Springhead, netted in his first nine games for the club in the 2002/03 season having joined in October of 2002. Club Historian Allan Jones believes that there is an even more impressive scoring record from early in the 20 th century and will provide details in a future issue.
AKIM SAMMS The Millers winger tormented the Barnton defence throughout the afternoon, creating the opening goal for Joe Bevan and sending in a stream of crosses from the right flank. The former Burnley youngster has gone from strength to strength since joining the club.
Benito Lowe – Another fine all round display by The Millers midfielder, scoring twice on his 50 th appearance for the club.
Opposition: Barnton Competition: NWCFL Date: 21 August 2021 Venue: The Offside Trust Stadium Weather: Overcast Distance: 32.6 miles Journey Time: 60 minutes GROUND The Offside Trust Stadium, formerly Townfield, is much improved from our previous visit there several years ago. The bar area is pleasant, with televisions showing sport and canned beers on sale along with hot food and drinks. DAY OUT & GETTING THERE It was a damp August afternoon although the rain did stop for the duration of the game. At an hour in length it's a nice journey time, giving opportunity to analyse pre-match and discuss the game on the way home.
VERDICT Journey: 9/10 Stadium: 7/10 Programme: 6/10 Hospitality: 9/10 Facilities: 7/10 Overall: 8/10 THE SUPPORTERS The crowd was 72 which is about average for Barnton. A decent following from New Mills too made for a good atmosphere. While the game was a feisty one on the pitch the supporters mixed nicely in the stands. HOME BY Back in New Mills by 6pm even after collecting the kit and clearing out the dressing rooms. THE MATCH A good performance by The Millers against a decent side. Barnton had lost every game previously, but based on this game they appear to be in a false position. GETTING AWAY A quick drink after the game and set off. Northwich is not a bad journey at all. On the motorway in no time and home in good time.
