Brisport September 2020 September 2020 Welcome to the 2020 September Brisport. Is it just me or are the weeks going much faster during the COVID – 19 pandemic? It seems to me that this is a phenomenon but I am sure others will not agree. One reason for the apparent rapid passing of time has been that August was very busy month for BSCC with the very successful completion of the first rally for 2020 and eager preparations going on for the our second event – the 2020 Inspirations Paint Capalaba Hinterland Rally which is Round 1 of the Innate Motorsport and Events Queensland Rally Championship and will be ably delivered by Mal Bartolo on Saturday 19 September 2020 at Imbil. Much work has been done to comply with the current COVID safe requirements of the Queensland Government and Motorsport Australia and it has been a steep learning curve for Mal as he takes on the mantle of Clerk of the Course. Mal has an article on the event later in the Magazine which gives a good overview of the lead up to the event. We still need more officials so please step up to help QRC 1 get under way with a full crew of competitors and officials. You must register using the officials registration form on our website so that we can maintain complete COVID tracking records and know who we have on the event. Brad Hurford and Iain Robertson are working closely with Craig Porter to develop and deliver Round 2 of the QRC, the Roo Systems Australia Rally at Manumbar on 31 October 2020. This new event management team is another example of our continuing focus on succession planning for the sustainability of events into the future. With the cancellation of the Classic Outback Trial, Craig will be “on the ground” for the event and will be providing a guiding hand on the day. Barry Neuendorff and Tate Svenson have also been busy to get the Lockyer Off-Road event up and running in November and more details will be forthcoming on this in the near future.
Brisport September 2020 So, as we proceed into a more complex organisational scenario for each of our events, I must again thank Peter Flynn for his excellent work in setting up the COVID compliance regime for the Benarkin event and given our other Clerks of Course such strong templates to use as they move ahead. I have received very positive feedback from Motorsport Australia on the quality and detail of Peter’s work and the subsequent documentation for Imbil, so everyone involved can take a well-deserved pat on the back for all their efforts. So as we move into Spring and our thoughts turn to more rallying and off-roading, please stay safe and abide by social distancing and all the other restrictions. In this way we will be able to deliver and enjoy the sport that we all love and look forward to. To all our Rally and Off-Road families, look after each other and don’t forget to ask RUOK. See you in the forest Paul Woodward President
Brisport September 2020 Once again, Marius Swart from Inspirations Paint Capalaba has generously come to the party as our return event sponsor and we thank him for his continued support. With just weeks to go, the tension is building for the start of the Queensland Rally Championship for 2020. The impact of the COVID pandemic has introduced a lot of new rules and restrictions and while we have a sound COVID-Safe plan approved by Motorsport Australia, the Queensland Health rules are a moving target with the event organisers needing to be up to date on a daily basis. That said, the event has really taken shape with some roads graded on the weekend removing ruts and bumps that could have had an impact on machinery. Slashing done and some “gardening” along the way to cut back some of the lantana in places. We conducted a recce of the stages on the weekend also with members from stage teams,
Brisport September 2020 course cars and recovery coming along for the drive to view what we will be presenting to competitors. Roads are similar to the 2019 event but we’ve found some sneaky tracks to add and we’ve lost some due to new restrictions by HQP; and road deterioration just from the weather and lack of use. The ongoing humour is that Casey’s Long has been shrinking and is now affectionately known as Casey’s (not so) Long. All the same, the stage is great and features some favourite parts of the Imbil forest. Additional to all of this, we welcome Inate Motorsports & Events as the Championship sponsor and we also welcome Adrian Coppin as the first car we’ll see in anger as Zero car. After a disappointing run of technical issues, our scheduled Zero car has had to withdraw from duties with Adrian volunteering to step into the role. The Innate Motorsport & Events Peugeot 208 AP4 car was entered to run as a promotional vehicle, but will now be the first car officials will see at pace and will bring an additional element of excitement to the start of the day. We have a strong field of 50+ entries and with less than 3 weeks to go, the field is looking pretty good. At this stage we have a class field of competitors with many big names entered such as Menzies, Dermody, Brinkman and Quinn (sorry if I’ve omitted other competitors of note). We also look forward to our young novices joining in for the fun and wish them well on the journey. Due to COVID, there will be no spectating but we have a growing army of media officials registering so we can expect coverage in both photo and video. Just a reminder to all officials & competitors, we are trying our best to run a no contact event and this includes the paperwork we need pre-event. If you are having any difficulties with this, please reach out to the Event Secretary, the Officials Coordinator or myself for help See you on the 19th September. Mal Bartolo Clerk of Course Cheers Mal
