Suncoast Alumni Club Mid Year Review
It has been a very good year for the Suncoast Alumni Club and we could

announce that the club has once again completed all the required criteria

increased our scholarship account through Champion membership and

Fund (read about it further in the newsletter) at The Ohio State
University. This allowed us to provide scholarship money to 7 very
UPCOMING EVENTS deserving students this year for a total donation of $11,000.
Summer Picnic and Thanks to everyone who participated in club events including food and
Student Send Off toy drives, Month of Service and other activities.

Avenue, St. Petersburg We are happy to announce that the 2018 official Game Day locations
will again be O’Briens Irish Pub, 701 W. Lumsden Rd., Brandon and
Season opener Quaker Steak and Lube, 10400 49th Street North, Clearwater. We need
Oregon State at OSU a couple individuals to help Matt, Lenore and Barbie at O’Brien’s.
Saturday, September 1st Please contact Ken Jaffe if you can assist with membership and raffles.

Times TBD Do you know of any locations in other areas through Tampa Bay
that would be interested in hosting Ohio State Buckeyes Game
Day? We are always interested in expanding to restaurants/bars that
can meet our Game Day requirements.
Past Events t 1/20/2018 East West Shrine Game College football fans came out to Tropicana Field to see the best of the college football seniors. The largest group of fans in attendance was of course the Ohio State faithful. After a Suncoast Alumni Club pregame tailgate we were treated to one more look at J.T. Barrett, Chris Worley and Damon Webb. 2/11/2018 OSU at USF Women’s Basketball Game Suncoast Alumni Club members and Tampa Bay area Buckeyes enjoyed a luncheon at the University of South Florida and a basketball game between The Ohio State University women’s basketball team and USF. The results weren’t great that afternoon, but the women went on to have a great season. We were joined by former players Beth Howe and Kristin Watt. 3/12/2018 Buck-I-SERV A large attendance of 20 Buck-I-SERV students joined club members and got together to have a fun filled night at Quaker Steak and Lube. The two student groups made up the Pinellas County Sea Grant Trip and Florida Aquatic Trip. Thanks to those students for making a better environment here in Tampa Bay. 3/19/2018 Admitted Student Night Antonio Serano of the Ohio State University Admissions Office hosted a dinner and Ohio State orientation session for students and their parents that have been accepted for the 2018 Fall Semester from the Tampa Bay area. Antonio provided information to the students on The Ohio State University and the upcoming freshmen year. Club members provided personal experiences from their Ohio State days. This gave the board the chance to meet the students before deciding awards for the 2018 Suncoast Alumni Club scholarships. 4/7/2018 Month of Service – Feeding Tampa Bay Participating in The Ohio State University Month of Service, Suncoast members and local Buckeye’s spent the morning sorting and packaging food to fight hunger and support Feeding Tampa Bay at their warehouse in Tampa Bay. 4/14/2018 Ohio State Buckeyes 2018 Spring Game The Suncoast Alumni Club hosted game day events at both O’Brien’s and Quaker Steak and Lube. We got a glimpse of what to expect for the 2018 season including a look at Dwayne Haskins and Tate Martell. 4/14/2018 Alumni Night at the Tampa Bay Rays A good crowd of Suncoast Alumni Club members and Tampa Bay area Buckeyes enjoyed pregame festivities and a Rays baseball game along with alumni from several other college and Big Ten schools.
Past Events continued 4/28/2018 Month of Service - Beach Cleanup – Keeping Tampa Bay Beautiful Alumni club members and local Buckeyes joined together to clean our adopted shoreline on Davis Island next to Tampa General Hospital. The group spent the morning picking up and bagging trash in the park area and shoreline. We encouraged you to participate. It is a great opportunity to get together with fellow Buckeyes. 5/8/2018 Buck-I-SERV Buck-I-SERV students joined club members and got together at Quaker Steak and Lube to have a fun filled night at “All You Can Eat Wing Night”. Thanks again to those students for making a better environment here in Tampa Bay. 5/19/2018 Annual Banquet and Scholarship Awards Suncoast Alumni Club members and Tampa Bay area Buckeyes enjoyed an evening of Aquarium touring, cocktails, dinner, scholarship awards with guest speaker and former Buckeye football star Jeff Logan at The Florida Aquarium in downtown Tampa. Andrew Connors was honored as 2018 Suncoast Alumni Club Scholarship recipient. Additionally the Suncoast Alumni Scholarship provided additional scholarship money to sophomores Anna Dorey, Isabella Borrero Jackson Stupp, junior Veronica Carlson and seniors Hannah Dalene and Zoe Dolcimascolo. Jeff was the highlight of the evening with a great inspirational and motivating presentation and also a story or two about Woody, Archie, Urban and a great tribute to our own member, Tyson Gentry. A donation was made to The Logan Family Foundation (funding life-saving cancer research) by the club. Special thanks to Jeff and Brendan Braaten for joining us for this special evening. Paying Forward – An Ohio State Tradition
Pay it forward is an expression for describing the beneficiary of a good deed repaying it to others
instead of to the original benefactor. The history of the expression goes back to ancient Greece,
described by the likes of Benjamin Franklin and Ralph Waldo Emerson. But we most remember it as
misquoted by our beloved Woody Hayes, “You can pay back only seldom. You can always pay
forward, and you must pay line for line, deed for deed, and cent for cent." He also shortened the
(mis)quotation into "You can never pay back; but you can always pay forward" and variants.
Thanks to everyone who participated in the Ohio State Day of Giving, February 28, 2018. Special
thanks to those who directed their gift to the Suncoast (Tampa Bay) Alumni Club Scholarship Fund

Thanks also to everyone who participated in the Ohio State Month of Service Events. Both the
Feeding Tampa Bay on April 7, 2018 and the Beach Clean Up on April 28, 2018 drew many members
and local Buckeyes.
Scholarship Update
Working closely with the Admissions Office and our regional representative Antonio Serrano, the club
reached out to 50 admitted students earlier this year. These high school seniors were invited to our
Admitted Students dinner March 19, 2018. The Suncoast Board decided on Andrew Connors, Jesuit
High School as the 2018 Scholarship recipient. The following scholarship donations were approved
by the board for 2018:
