Summer 2 2021 Dear Parents, As I write to you now in this, our last week of term, I am sure that like me, you will be reflecting on the most extraordinary year. For all of us, both at home in our personal lives and here at school, we will have faced many challenges and sometimes sadness. However, we have also been met with the most amazing kindness, compassion, creativity and connectivity all of which have reaffirmed for me the fact that we do have the most wonderful community here at Stamshaw. I have watched your children laughing, playing, learning and caring for friends. They have shown resilience, maturity and superb strength, adapting brilliantly to the many changes over the past few months. We are incredibly proud of them all and so grateful to you, our fabulous parents for your unwavering support these past two years. Covid has not disappeared and therefore most of our infection control will remain in place at least for this week. Initially we will also continue with our staggered start and end times in September whilst we assess the best way forward. You can find these times on the back page of this newsletter. Regrettably we have also had several confirmed covid cases amongst staff and families this week, some of which have resulted in a class closure for the remainder of the term. The new advice from Public Health England, is that any further cases this week will result in classes closing, but children will not be instructed by school to self-isolate for 10 days. You will hear from NHS Track and Trace if this is required. In happier news, I am delighted to inform you that Miss Palmer enjoyed a beautiful sunny wedding this weekend and has now returned to school as Mrs Jewer. Mrs Malyon has welcomed her new little baby girl into the world. Our warmest congratulations to all of them. We are very proud to inform you that Mrs Fancey received very prestigious recognition last week at the Teach Portsmouth Awards where she was nominated for her outstanding support for many of our Stamshaw families in the Inclusion and Diversity category. Her belief in the importance of caring relationships to support vulnerable children is a thread that runs through everything we believe in and we were therefore delighted by the city wide acknowledgement of her expertise. Our very own Mr Young was also nominated for the ‘Unsung Hero’ Award. This recognises his exceptional dedication to his role in school, his outstanding skills of organisation, his knowledge of Health, Safety and Fire regulations and his impeccable attention to detail in all these areas. It also recognises the importance of his role to the children as a role model for recycling, energy saving, and a friendly face on the gate. We couldn’t be more proud of him. As we close for the summer holiday, I would also like to say a fond farewell to Mrs Black who shall be starting her retirement. Mrs Black has worked at Stamshaw for over 20 years and has supported many of your children with her kind, calm approach and her love of reading. We wish her every happiness with her family. I would also like to wish our wonderful Year 2 children every joy as they leave us to spread their wings and fly to Junior School. They have been simply magnificent over the past three years and we will miss them all dearly. Finally I would like to wish you all a wonderful summer with your families. I hope the sun continues to shine and that you all stay safe and healthy. I hope that in September, life at school will have returned to a little more normality and that we will once again be able to welcome you in to see your children perform, sing, dance and share their learning with you. I hope you enjoy reading about some of our highlights from the past few weeks in the rest of this newsletter. With very warm wishes, Mrs Cooper
We celebrated World Ocean Day on 8th June. During this exciting event, our amazing children each took a moment to celebrate our oceans and reflect on how best to protect them. We wore a sea of bright blue clothing, some ocean themed outfits and even stunning face paints. We made clay sea turtles, crafting delicate paper mache jellyfish and finally creating stunning paper plate aquariums. We all felt inspired to help our planet and continue to spread this ever important message. Lennox has been growing lettuces in our school vegetable patch. These plants started as a tiny seeds and with water, sun and care they grew into delicious lettuces for us to eat.
Our Sports Day at the Mountbatten was a great event. The sun shone and our whole school enjoyed cheering friends and clapping our classmates in the various events. We all agreed that it was exhilarating and exciting to have the freedom to run, jump, skip and leap as we took part in every race. Our Early Years children were so excited to be visited by Mucky Bucket Farm. Our playground was taken over by Benny the Alpaca, a donkey, a horse, Pygmy goats, chickens, chicks, ducks, guinea pigs and a rabbit! The children enjoyed holding the chicks, brushing and grooming the animals and feeding Benny his carrots! The interactive experience put a huge smile on everyone’s faces and we are so proud of the gentle, caring nature of our animal loving children! Year 1 had so much fun taking part in Pirate Day to celebrate the end of our Yo, Ho, Ho! topic. We spent the day creating and making scary pirate hats, eye patches, cutlasses and our very own pet parrots! When we were fully equipped with all of our scary pirate accessories our pirate crews got to work playing games, climbing the rigging and scrubbing the decks. We finally used our pirate passports to sail the seven seas. We boarded the pirate ship in the playground before finally walking the plank (sliding down the slide into the sharks!) A great day was had by all!
Year 2 had a wonderful time at Go Ape! We loved challenging ourselves on the obstacle courses suspended in the tree tops. Many children conquered their worries about going on the course, completing both the easy and tricky courses. The zip line proved to be a favourite activity amongst all of the children. We even had the opportunity to play some team building games. Our favourite game was filling the leaky tube with water to get the object out of the top; the only trouble was that our cups were leaking too! We all laughed as we raced to fill up the tube before our cups emptied! A fun day out for all!
