The Speaking Woods Principal Desk Dear Parents, Greetings from Smrti Academy! We are reaching the fag end of the academic year with online revisions taking place in full swing for the ensuing final exams. Children, as usual, await the summer break, a time to recuperate and refresh. This year has been exceptionally strenuous for them, given the pandemic and the added burden to get adapted to a fully online system of learning and exams. There cannot be a more deserving break than this one. Parents inclusive, do enjoy the days off. Schedule for the final exam has been uploaded on CoolG and the PTM has been fixed on 19th April 2021. Time slot will be shared shortly with all of you. PTM would be the time to take stock of your child’s performance and progress over the last one year. It would certainly help you guide her/his academic growth. Hence, I request all of you to attend the PTM and discuss your child’s progress in detail with the class teachers. We need to focus on the Learning Journey of the child and not just the marks. The school will reopen on 4th June 2021. The institution is fully geared for both online/offline classes depending on the unfolding COVID-19 situation. Orientation for parents shall be conducted on 29th May, details of which would be uploaded on CoolG. Any feedback, suggestions or comments from your side to help improve the school is more than welcome. We keep making sincere efforts to make the school a better place to learn, grow and bloom. Additionally, if you feel that certain things are going on well, please do not hesitate to share that too, so that we keep continuing with those good practices. I wish good luck to all my loving Smrtians for the coming Final exams and happy holidays to all of you. Let’s welcome the new academic year with lots of hope and optimism, that’s in store for us, while we start a fresh journey. Have a safe, happy and fruitful vacation! The Speaking Woods Highlights for the month of March Grade 1 Montessori sessions Grade 1 children continued with geometry work in the month of March’21. After working in detail with various shapes, appreciating their similarities and differences, children learnt to write definitions of shapes in their own words based on their understanding and observation. Creating their own definitions engage the children actively in learning of concepts and also provide opportunities to develop literacy and express ideas. We introduced Roman letters to children. Writing in Roman numerals is almost like writing in code or hieroglyphics, that make math fun and engaging. It provides new representation of number and combines math with history. Learning Roman letters also is a reinforcer for place values, addition, and subtraction concepts. Zookeeper activity The children were asked to make a zoo brochure imagining themselves as the zookeepers and sticking/drawing the pictures of animals they want to keep in their zoo. Children also wrote a few fun facts about the animals. This activity provided children a creative expression along with learning about zoo and facts about animals. Grade 2 to 4 For Grade 4, Hindi recitation activity was conducted so that children would be able to recite with flow and rhythm the lines of the poem learnt by them as a part of the lesson. Revision for annual exams is going on in full swing. Revision in all the subjects were conducted through oral and written tests, worksheets. Children are revising the concepts in a fun way through quizzes and games. 4 April 2021 Edition The Smrti Journal – Converting Moments to Memories Copyright © Smrti Academy, 2017

The Speaking Woods Students’ Corner The Grey Fountain – Story about nature care Once upon a time, a boy was walking through a wood and he thought he heard someone crying while singing. Following the sound, he came to a big, round, mysterious, grey fountain. The sad sobbing seemed to be coming from the fountain pool. The boy swept aside the pool's dirty surface water and saw a group of grey fish swimming in a slow circle in the pond. With each lap they made, their little voices opened and out came the sobbing sound. Amused by this, the boy tried to catch one of these incredible talking fish. But when he stuck his arm into the water it turned grey right up to the elbow. As this happened, a huge sadness entered into him, and he suddenly understood how sorrowful the fish were feeling. He felt like how the earth felt; dirty and contaminated. He quickly pulled his arm out of the water, and ran from that place. But the arm stayed grey, and the boy continued feeling sad. He tried so many times to cheer himself up, but nothing worked. That was, until he realised that if he were to make the Earth happy then that happiness would be, in turn, transmitted back to him, through the earth on his arm. From then on, he set about looking after the countryside. He cared for the plants, he did what he could to keep the water from being polluted, and he encouraged others to do the same. He was so successful that his hand started to recover its normal colour. When the grey had disappeared completely, he started feeling happy again, and he decided to go and visit the fountain. When he was still some way from the fountain, he could hear the fish singing happily, and he heard them joyfully splashing in the crystal- clear waters of that magic fountain. It was plain to see that the Earth had returned to its original happiness; and the boy felt even happier at the sight. Moral Value of the story: Caring for the environment is a cause for real happiness. 6 April 2021 Edition The Smrti Journal – Converting Moments to Memories Copyright © Smrti Academy, 2017
